How to choose a disc for recording: characteristics to consider

How to choose a disc to burn

When choosing a disc for recording, it is advisable to consider the following characteristics:

  1. Recording standard (music, video, various files);

  2. Disc type (CD, DVD, BD);

  3. Recorded disc type (R, RW);

  4. Drive compatibility.

Recording standard

recording standards

All types of optical recording can be conditionally divided into two types – classical, in which data is recorded in the form of tracks, and modern, when a separate file system is created on the disk. The first option puts a limit on the recording duration, the second – on the amount of data.

So, the following recording standards belong to the first type:

  1. Audi o CD is a well-known audio recording standard compatible with almost all playback devices;

  2. Video DVD is a recording standard designed to produce discs that can be played on virtually all home DVD players.

  3. Recording in .MP3, .AVI and other standards belongs to the second type.

Disc type

There are 5 types of discs most widely used. They differ in the amount of data that can be written to them:

  1. CD. Maximum capacity – about 700 MB (or up to 70 minutes of audio in Audi o CD format);

  2. DVD. About 4.5 GB;

  3. DVD-DL. About 7-9 GB;

  4. BD. About 26 GB;

  5. BD-DL. About 50 GB.

Recorded disc type

Recording discs are of two types:

  1. R. They can be written once;

  2. RW. They can be recorded multiple times;

RE. BD with dubbing support.

For obvious reasons, RW / REs cost more than R.

Drive compatibility

drive compatibility

Before taking a disc for recording, it is worth making sure that the drive supports it. This can be done by looking at its labeling. If the drive supports CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, BD-R, BD-RE, it has corresponding marks.

If not, then you should familiarize yourself with the characteristics of the drive. However, almost all modern drives support discs up to and including DVD-RW.

Manufacturers

Optical discs are now produced by almost all companies that make computer accessories – from the budget Defender to the relatively expensive Verbatim. However, their products are about the same in terms of operational parameters, so you can safely purchase any model.
