How to choose the size of gloves

Clothes and accessories

Gloves are one of the most functional accessories in every person's wardrobe, regardless of gender. In the cold season, it is a great way to prevent the skin from freezing and bursting from unnaturally low temperatures; in the summer, it is a versatile accessory that will perfectly suit a strict men's suit for an evening trip to the theater, or a light women's dress with an air cut.

Unfortunately, many people neglect this accessory in its most extreme form, most often the reason lies in the fact that they do not know their size, which means they cannot choose the right pair in the store. Most gloves have this feature: even if they are 2-3 sizes larger / smaller than yours, they will fit on you, so it is always difficult for people who are ignorant of this matter to find a suitable option. Now we will understand this not a tricky issue with all possible care and scrupulousness, so that you are guaranteed to learn how to choose the right model of gloves for any situation.

Algorithm for determining the size of gloves

Algorithm for determining the size of gloves

The sequence of actions is very simple, its main goal is to determine the size of your palm in inches, because it is from them that the size of a particular thing is calculated. So let's get started.

  1. The first thing we do is measure the circumference of the palm. To do this, we need a sewing centimeter and, preferably, someone from our family to get more accurate results. We find a hollow at the base of the thumb and use it to determine the girth of the palm – as you can see, everything is very simple.

  2. Now you have the measured girth of the palm, but the resulting figure is in centimeters, but we need inches. To convert an indicator from centimeters to inches, simply divide it by 2.54 – that's all.

  3. It was our turn to round off the number, also nothing complicated: according to the school rules learned in mathematics lessons, we round the girth of our palm in inches up to 0.5.

  4. The last action – we look at the table and find out our letter size, which differs depending on whether it is women's gloves or men's. Let's take an example: by measuring the palm, you get 20.5 centimeters, divide this number by 2.54, we get 8.0708 inches, which after rounding turns into 8 inches – this is a female 'L' or a male 'XS'.

Now you know exactly how to determine the size of gloves that will fit perfectly on your hand, but the study of the accessory does not end at this point – we will have some more useful information.

How to choose winter gloves

How to choose winter gloves

Since the cold season is a huge part of the life of Russians, it is necessary to consider the peculiarities of choosing winter gloves, or as they are also called 'warm' gloves, separately. Regularly wearing gloves will protect your hands from frostbite, your skin from flaking and cracking, and you from discomfort. Simply put, if it's cold outside, gloves are very, very necessary – they are stylish, comfortable and guarantee safety.

When choosing a specific model, first of all, you should look at the following parameters:

  1. The size. We have already talked about this – only the right size guarantees your hands warmth and comfort. Gloves that are too small will interfere with the movement of blood flow in the palms, which in itself will make the hands freeze, too large gloves simply will not retain heat – therefore, the correct size is the main thing.

  2. Lining. Everything is simple: there should be a lining, with the exception of decorative gloves, which are worn 'for beauty', in all other cases, a lining is necessary – it will extend the life of the thing and additionally protect your hands from frost.

  3. Seams. Cheap gloves and fake gloves are very easy to recognize by the abundance of seams, especially if they are outside the product. Let's take an example: high-quality gloves are sewn from large pieces of leather / suede / fleece, so there will be few seams on such products, and if the gloves are sewn from scraps (albeit well sewn), then there will be a lot of seams, sometimes even so many that hide them inside it is simply impossible. Therefore, remember: the seams should be inside the glove, their number should be minimized.

  4. Paint. Before buying, take a piece of a white cloth, moisten it with warm water and use it vigorously on a glove – if there are traces left, then it is better to refuse to buy this pair. You don't want to leave paint on your leather, clothes and furniture, do you? And low-quality dyes are only capable of this, so do not be lazy to check the quality of painting the material especially carefully.

Now it is worth saying separately about the material for gloves – there are a huge variety of options, this is a very extensive topic, so we will not dive into it headlong, but we still have to say a few words.

  1. Fleece gloves are warm and comfortable, very pleasant to the touch and inexpensive, but they get wet incredibly quickly.

  2. Woolen gloves are ideal for dry winter days, moisture for them is certain death, once saturated, wool completely ceases to warm your hands.

  3. Suede gloves are not recommended for daily wear, you can have a pair for special occasions – for example, going to the theater, guests, etc. – but nothing more. Suede deteriorates very quickly.

  4. Leather gloves are considered the most comfortable and effective, but real leather is not cheap, and besides, not everyone will like such an accessory.

After reading these points, you can completely calmly go to your favorite haberdashery store and choose your favorite pair of gloves not mindlessly, but with sense and knowledge of the matter.

Glove manufacturers overview

Glove manufacturers overview

Initially, each company positions itself as a 'leather glove brand', although they all also manufacture products from other materials.

  1. Henderson. The company produces many gloves, but everything is exclusively in the classic style – only leather and no decorative elements. Another feature of the brand is that it creates only male models, so you will have to turn to another manufacturer for a female pair. Especially popular are models with a 100% wool lining.

  2. Berg & Berg. The Scandinavian brand is known for its elegant models of gloves, almost all collections are made of either leather or suede. The disadvantage of the product is that it is not very suitable for wearing in winter, but for late autumn and early spring, gloves are ideal.

  3. Merola. An Italian company that manufactures gloves in the 'above average' price range: impeccable quality and incredible comfort are what awaits you after your purchase. The lining of most models is cashmere or silk, they are comfortable, but not suitable for wearing in winter – in this case, choose gloves with a woolen lining.
