How to choose a wristwatch

Clothes and accessories

It is not so important whether you value your time or unique style, functionality or external data – a wristwatch remains such an accessory that cannot spoil the first impression. We propose to figure out what types of watches for women and men are, how to choose them and which company should be preferred.

Mechanisms of wristwatches: types and differences

Mechanisms of wristwatches: types and differences

The durability and serviceability of the watch directly depends on the quality of the parts of the mechanism and their assembly – there should be no errors or inaccuracies, only a well-coordinated design with a certain operating principle. All modern watch models can be divided into two groups: quartz and mechanical, in which the models differ only in the source, which provides the device with energy for continuous operation.

  1. Quartz watch. Such a mechanism has a battery and an electronic unit that sends signals to the working engine every minute. Due to the physical features of the quartz crystal, high-precision and stable operation of the watch is ensured without the need to additionally wind it. The frequency remains constant, so quartz watches have a longer service life.

  2. Mechanical watches. In accessories of a mechanical type, a spring is wound, which, spinning, makes the drum move and use the entire mechanism in operation. The accuracy of these watches is related to environmental factors (temperature, position, wear of individual elements, and much more).

Tightness and water resistance of modern watches

Tightness and water resistance of modern watches

To choose a watch for a man or a woman, you need to decide what they need an accessory for and what parameters it should have. So, just an attractive women's watch with a bright design may not have the most reliable case, and a device that travels with an athlete must be highly durable and have such a feature as tightness.

Distinguish between waterproof and waterproof watches – their difference lies in the fact that the former are able to protect the mechanism from the ingress of small volumes of water, and the latter can freely withstand pressure at depth under water. Therefore, when an accessory has the inscription 'water resistant', it is necessary to find the numbers corresponding to the degree of water resistance.

  1. 3 ATM – 5 ATM. This is the minimum protection against water that will keep your watch running after splashing, hand washing, rain, training and similar situations.

  2. 10 ATM. This watch is designed for water sports, but not for full immersion.

  3. 20-30 ATM. The indicator '200 m' and above indicates that the watch can be safely taken with you to a depth of several hundred meters without worrying about its safety.

It is very important to remember that after immersion in sea water, the watch should be washed and dried, and in no case should you try to influence it in water.

Materials and brands: difficulties of choice

Materials and brands: difficulties of choice

As a rule, high-strength metal alloys are used in the manufacture of the main body of a wristwatch, then several types of materials can be used as the outer glass. The glass protects the dial from mechanical stress and various damages, dust ingress, which can damage the entire mechanism. Currently, most companies use the following materials in production:

  1. Hezalite is a transparent plastic (acrylic glass) that can withstand stress and temperature changes well. The material is difficult to break, but even with a strong impact, it does not shatter into fragments, but retains its integrity. Plastic is arguably the cheapest material used to create affordable casual and sporty pieces.

  2. Artificial crystal is a mineral glass that withstands loads well, but is slightly less resistant to scratches. This material is used everywhere to create watches of the middle price category, and mineral glass is easy to replace by any qualified craftsman.

  3. Sapphire crystal is the most expensive glass used in the production of high quality wristwatches. For many years, its coating remains smooth and glossy, without scratches and scuffs due to its high strength.

Manufacturers often make combined glasses for men and women watches – the main layer is made of mineral glass and a thin one is made of sapphire. In pursuit of successful sales of products, modern companies release a large number of collections in order to please the largest number of customers and diversify their assortment. However, there are brands that have won the love of buyers for the reliability and durability of their accessories. Among such companies are Patek Philippe, Breguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre and more accessible representatives – Casio, Diesel, Guess, Paris Hilton.
