How to tuck a shirt into pants or jeans

Life style

Why should grown men learn to tuck a shirt into their pants, if this is still taught in childhood? At first glance, you are right. But, take a look around and notice the tucked shirts of your colleagues or friends. Someone looks like a parachutist who awkwardly shoves his shirt into his pants. Others tuck and straighten the shirt every 5 minutes, which will come out of the trousers. I'm sure you also have situations when a shirt of a regular cut (not slim-fit) now and then puffs up in the belt.

Today we will learn how to tuck a shirt into pants so that it does not crawl out and puff up for a long time. Here are some tips to help you get rid of the awkward feeling and forget about the problems with parachute shirts for a long time.

Which shirts are tucked in and which are not

There are 3 types of hem for shirts and shirts:

  1. A shirt with a flat hem (the lower part does not change in height and has no slits);
  2. A shirt with straight cutouts on the sides (there is no difference in height between the front and back);
  3. Shirt with cutouts, while the back is larger than the front.

Types of shirt hem

The first and second types of shirts do not need to be tucked in, but the last one must always be tucked in. All this applies to classic shirts, but what else do you need / do not need to tuck in?

  • Undershirt – must always be tucked in if a shirt is on top. Another thing is when the shirt is worn separately, or you are dressed in a casual style.
  • T-shirt – can be tucked in or not. For example, tight-fitting short tees can be tucked into chinos, especially if you have an interesting belt at your waist. But keep in mind, depending on the style and shape of the T-shirt, some may not be appropriate to tuck in at all.
  • Polo – you can refuel, but you can not. Golfers tuck the polo shirt in to keep it out of the way. On the other hand, sitting in the office, you don't have to refuel the polo. I heard about the stereotype when they think that only old people run polo. In my opinion, this is not the case, and there is not a single prescription that a young guy cannot do.
  • Linen shirts are usually not tucked in, but if it is tight enough an exception can be made.
  • Hawaiian shirts are never tucked in.

Pick shirts that fit you well. Size, style, shape and fit make a big difference when you decide to tuck a shirt into your pants. How the shirt should fit, read in our previous publications.

How to properly tuck your shirt

A well-tucked shirt is immediately visible. Here are some criteria to watch out for:

  • You shouldn't have extra folds.
  • The torso lines should be clearly visible.
  • There should be no scabby folds around the waist.
  • The line of buttoned-up shirt buttons should be flush with the fly of the trousers and the belt patch.

All these details characterize you as a neat or sloppy person. Even if you are a neat and pedant, but with a badly tucked shirt you will look like a slob.

Are you a big man with a belly? The shirt should be free of folds and 'scabs' in the front. I agree, it's difficult, but possible. This is what we will learn. The only subtlety – choose long shirts so that they do not come out from under the belt.

Method number 1. Base

The basic method is an elementary sequence of threading underwear, shirt and buttoned trousers. I do not know if there are people left who tuck their shirt in with their pants already buttoned. Just in case, I will focus on this.

How to tuck a shirt in the basic way:

  1. Put on an undershirt (if wearing).
  2. Put on your shirt and button up all the buttons.
  3. Put on trousers or jeans while gently straightening the front of your shirt.
  4. Fasten your pants belt (if worn).

I think this is how 90% of men tuck their shirt in, so I didn't open America for you. I want to note that this method only works in the case of a well-fitted shirt that fits snugly at the waist. Look again at how the shirt should fit.

Method number 2. Basic +

The essence of this method is as follows: tuck the shirt into the boxers before tucking the shirt into the pants. At first glance, there seems to be no difference with the first method, but the shirt will hold up better.

While this method is quite effective, it may not be very convenient if you are wearing a swimsuit and not boxers. And the undershirt can be made of thick fabric. This method is not for everyone, however, take note of it.

Method number 3. Army

The military method helps to get rid of excess fabric in the waist. Even if your shirt doesn't fit snugly on you, this method will help solve the problem.

So, first of all take a look at the diagram below. Note that there are small folds on the sides that remove excess pieces of the shirt.

How to tuck a shirt like an army:

  1. Put on an undershirt (if wearing).
  2. Put on your shirt and button up all the buttons.
  3. Put on trousers or jeans while gently straightening your shirt.
  4. Without buttoning your pants, fold with your thumb and forefinger. Personally, I find it more convenient to first fold one fold and press it with a belt, then fold the second. For a neat fold, pull it all the way to the hem of your shirt.
  5. Button up your pants and check if everything worked out.

How else can you keep your shirt in place?

Sometimes you can find special suspenders for shirts on sale. They are attached with their ends to the hem of the shirt and socks or a special tape on the thigh, the type of attachment depends on the type of suspenders. Thus, the shirt will never come out of the trousers and will not stick out in all directions.

The only drawback, in my opinion, will be some discomfort in the legs when squatting or walking. Most likely, at first you will feel the extra elastic bands under your pants.

Everything ingenious is simple: a few straps, and the shirt no longer wrinkles and does not come out

Tucking in a casual shirt

Informal settings and casual wear have their advantages. One of them is the ability to tuck in a shirt in style. Let's consider 2 interesting ways.

Fill only half

The essence of this method is to freely sharpen the left or right side of the shirt. In this case, the rear part must be tucked in. This method looks very interesting, but it requires a good sense of style. Before you go outside like this, look in the mirror and soberly assess your appearance.

Tuck in front

Another casual option is to tuck in the shirt only in the front, but leave it not tucked in at the back. This method will work for everyone. The only thing is, pick up a belt and / or buckle more interesting, as it will catch everyone's eye.
