How to tie a Van Wijk knot

Life style

The Van Wijk knot is a very long, cylindrical knot invented by artist Lisa van Wijk. The knot was conceived as “the longest knot of all” and is somewhat similar in shape to the Prince Albert knot. Unlike the latter, one more turn is added around the narrow end of the tie, which ultimately gives 3 turns. The knot is very unusual and will clearly attract public attention. It looks like a downward spiral.

Instructions on how to tie a tie with the “Van Wijk” knot

  1. Throw the inside of the tie over yourself, with the seams inward. The wide end is on the right and the narrow end is on the left. The tip of the narrow end should be extended to a level just above your navel (this value may vary depending on your height, length and thickness of the tie). We will work with the wide end of the tie.
  2. Position the wide end with the bumpy end, forming a crosshair.
  3. Wrap the narrow side with the wide end of the tie from left to right.
  4. Form the front of the tie knot by horizontally shifting the wide end from right to left.
  5. Wrap the narrow side with the wide end of the tie from left to right.
  6. Form the front of the tie knot a second time, shifting the wide end horizontally from right to left.
  7. Repeat, wrapping the wide end one more time, this time just below the first and second wraps.
  8. Form the front of the tie knot a third time, sliding the wide end horizontally from right to left.
  9. Pull the wide end towards the neck and pass it under the collar (tie) formed.
  10. Pass through the loops on the front of the knot that formed in steps 4, 6 and 8.
  11. Pull the wide end downward, tightening slightly. Adjust the resulting knot so that it fits evenly into your collar.
