How to tie a scarf (cravat) for a man

Life style

A scarf or cravat (pronounced “kravat”) is a rather unusual and rare piece of a modern stylish man's wardrobe. Cravat was very popular in England at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Nevertheless, the fashion for scarves is back and today it is possible to tie a 'retro tie' while remaining quite modern and fashionable. Today we will learn how to tie a scarf or cravat for a man in 3 ways.

Tying a scarf or cravat is very easy if you already know how to tie a tie. If not, then there is nothing wrong with that, it just takes a little training and manual dexterity. The fact is that the neckerchief is slightly larger than a regular tie, so a little more effort will be required.

Men's scarf (cravat)

In order to tie a neckerchief in a classic business style, we additionally need a tie pin. Note that the neckerchief is tied on a special shirt collar, which has very small triangular ends. Such shirts are sewn specifically for a bow tie or neckerchief.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Hang the scarf around your neck so that the ends of the scarf are flush (for convenience, you can make the right end slightly larger than the left).
  2. Place the right end over the left, crossing both ends.
  3. Without letting go of the right end, pass it through the loop on the neck, pulling it out at the chin.
  4. Pull the end down while tightening the knot well.
  5. Wrap the right side of the scarf around the back (left) end, from right to left, as shown.
  6. Pass the right end through the loop that formed on the front side.
  7. Tighten the two ends until an even knot is formed.
  8. Secure both ends of the tie with a pin, placing one end over the other.

Tie a casual neckerchief or an Ascot knot.

To tie a casual neckerchief, you need to undo the 2 top buttons of your shirt. The fact is that the scarf is not tied at the collar, but at the neck, while the collar only covers the knotted scarf. That is why there are no special requirements for the shirt. Any shirt can be used, but preferably without a button-down collar.

Tie a scarf for a bridal suit or 'Scrunchie' style.

Literally translated, the 'Scrunchie' neckerchief knot translates as 'hair tie'. Indeed, the knot of the neckerchief at the final stage resembles a vertically inverted scrunchie with ruffles.

This knot is very popular in the West. He is tied to wedding events for both the groom and the witnesses. There are ready-made, 'Scrunchie'-style neckerchiefs like a bow tie with an elastic band. However, of course, a hand-knotted scarf looks best.
