How to match shoes, socks and pants

Life style

Shoes are one of those things that can either decorate or completely ruin your outfit. Unsurprisingly, fashion journalist George Fraser once said, “If you want to know how a person is dressed, look at the floor.” Today, the boundaries between casual and formal shoes are being washed away. Everyone understands where and how to wear a classic suit, but few understand when and with what to wear shoes. The topic of our today's article is how to combine shoes, socks and pants.

General Tips

Before going over the options for shoes and socks that fit them, I want to focus on 2 main tips:

  1. The stricter the clothes on you, the more classic the shoes should be. Don't wear sports sneakers with khaki pants – pick one or the other.
  2. Black is more classic than brown, for example. However, brown shoes have one significant advantage – the endless range of colors.

Today, we will look at various variations of the combination of shoes, socks and trousers, and decide which one suits us best.

Shoes for the city

Firstly, I suggest paying attention to the combination of a woolen camouflage suit with black oxfords made of calfskin. Dark blue striped socks in contrasting colors will come in handy here more than ever. If you feel like drawing attention to yourself, try a ribbed reddish brown or a pair of finely patterned blue silk socks.

Secondly, we have striped worsted trousers and chestnut calfskin shoes. Ribbed red and blue socks make a good combination between brown shoes and a dark suit, but I would go for thin multi-stripe socks. For conservatives, dark blue socks with an embroidered pattern on them are suitable.

Third, we can choose brown and beige trousers and pair them with studded oxfords in brown calfskin. Socks are available in brown, fawn and lavender colors. Well, if you want simplicity, then you can choose brown or green socks with embroidery.

The last option is black calfskin rough shoes worn with gray trousers (in the illustration look like twill) paired with black and white embroidery on the socks. An alternative would be striped burgundy and white socks or green wool socks.

Shoes for nature

When traveling, shoes take up a lot of space, especially if the trip is planned with the whole family. But I have several suggestions that will help you choose the most versatile option.

Opt for deerskin shoes with rubber soles and pair them with gray flannel trousers, which perfectly complement the blue ribbed wool socks. If the wool is not suitable (too hot in them, for example), then you can choose greenish-turquoise cotton socks.

A second option would be brown chukka boots with crepe soles paired with wide yellow wool socks and green Harris tweed pants. Alternatively, green wool socks or brown socks with multi-colored patterns are suitable.

Thirdly, we can wear Scottish trousers, which are effectively paired with brown shoes with crepe soles. Look for rust-colored ribbed socks made from wool. You can also opt for multi-colored plaid socks.

Fourth, you can opt for brown crepe-soled bluchers and pair them with gray trousers, with white, green and yellow horizontal stripes. White and orange patterned wool socks look just as good on you as beige cotton or cashmere socks.

First, you could try on black Oxfords with an Irish accent, which, thanks to their color, are great for an office setting. Pair it with a dark chalk stripe of flannel pants and navy blue shade striped socks with hour hand embroidery to make you look irresistible. Also, you can choose burgundy colored socks with a white or blue rhombus, which is also a worthy alternative.

Secondly, you can wear brown monks, which will look harmonious with a suit in a glencheck pattern, as well as green or white socks. Instead of a light brown shade, you can opt for a dark brown, which is most likely a more versatile choice. As for the socks, you can choose from ribbed blue or burgundy with embroidery.

Finally, brown brogues are a great choice for a leisurely stroll. For socks, patterned wool socks, plain brown socks with clock hand embroidery, or green wool socks with white polka dots are fine.
