How to dress for an interview

Life style

In search of instructions on how to learn how to tie a tie, you are probably preparing for an interview. To help you do this without making many mistakes, and to get the most out of your stylish look and fashionably knotted tie, I've prepared a guide on how to dress for an interview.

Typically, in a casual interview, the only thing that guides you is trust. You present yourself in your best shape and try to make a trusting impression. If you are looking for an ideal person, then the person closest to his 'ideal' manifests itself precisely at an interview for a new job. Therefore, I recommend using a thick, wide and triangular tie, tied with a regular Windsor knot.

However, apart from a perfectly tied tie, you need to match the rest of the very important aspect of your interview look.

Your appearance matters a lot. As the saying goes: – 'They are greeted by their clothes, but escorted by their minds. Thus, it is necessary to dress as is customary in most serious companies, where there are some dress code standards.

How to dress for a job interview for a man

The list below should give you a general idea of how to dress for a job interview with a young person and what to avoid:

    • Suit: A classic, two-piece dark gray or navy business suit would be the perfect choice for your interview day. See how the suit should fit.
    • Shirt: white, with long sleeves and tailored to your figure. This is the topic of a whole book, but I recommend buying at least one white 'slim-fit' shirt so called (slim-fit). Size the collar slightly larger than the circumference of your neck. If you tie a tie, get a little nervous and the pressure jump a little, then with a tight-fitting collar, you will begin to feel suffocated. In order not to run with a ruler, a simple advice – put on a shirt, button up a button on the collar, and if a finger passes between the neck and collar, then this is your option. If you have to push your finger or the whole palm fits – not your option. See how the shirt should fit.
    • Tie: a regular plain tie will do, no monograms, blue or dark red, you can dark blue. Composition – 100% silk, no polyester. Such ties are not much cheaper, but the overall look will definitely spoil. Learn how to pick and tie a tie.
    • Accessories: Classic silver tie clip ensures your tie stays in place during interviews. Without a pinch, you end up being distracted by straightening your tie rather than engaging in dialogue with your potential employer. Plus, look nervous.

  • Head hair: make sure your hair is in good condition before the interview. Keep in mind that short haircuts are preferred.
  • Beard: Must be shaved. However, if you know how to present yourself with a beard and this is your integral part, you can take the risk and go with it. If you don't have a beard, learn how to grow a beard!
  • Mustache: Quite rare, but if you never shave it off, tidy it up.
  • Nails: Make sure they are trimmed and there is no dirt under the nails. This does not mean that you have to go to a beauty salon, but being able to neatly trim them and clean out the dirt is. You can read how to take care of a man's nails on our website.
  • Rings: wedding rings are quite normal, somewhere even a positive point, but other rings, I would not recommend wearing them.
  • Earrings and piercings: These and other things are best removed on the day of the interview.
  • Body odor and fresh breath: shower before going to the interview, use deodorants as needed, and make sure you have fresh breath. Never chew gum when you meet!
  • Perfumes and cologne: I highly recommend using light scents and not overdoing it with quantity. Read the article on how to choose the right perfume.
  • Briefcase: Take a briefcase with you, put a notebook and a couple of pens in it. It will make a good impression.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of recommendations, but it will allow you to understand the basic principles of a business person's dress code. Remember, it is always better to stick to long-established dress standards when hiring, rather than risk making a bad impression on your doorstep. At the end of the day, you have to be better than the rest of the respondents (people who came to the interview just like you), making the extra effort to differentiate yourself from your competitors.

I also recommend that in the evening, before the day of the interview, choose the set of clothes in which you go to the meeting. This will allow you to see the 'big picture' and, if necessary, correct your image. I think that you are not used to wearing a classic suit and it will be useful for you to get used to it a little. In any case, in the morning you will feel more confident and will not become nervous about the torn off button that you accidentally found just before leaving, because you sewed it yesterday, following a simple recommendation.
