How to dress a man in summer – part 2

Life style

Summer continues, and every day the thermometer rises higher and higher. Someone went to the dacha, and someone went to the sea to sunbathe. Well, those who stayed in the city are content with strolling through parks and alleys. The selection of summer clothes in our wardrobe is still relevant.

How should a modern young man dress in hot summer weather while remaining presentable? We answer the question in today's article.

In the first part of our guide to choosing summer clothes, we covered the basic principles and types of fabrics that are best for hot weather. In the second part, we will start looking at men's clothing that is suitable for the summer season. In particular, we will analyze men's T-shirts, shirts, a summer suit and a jacket.

Key points from the first part

Wear light-colored clothing in the summer. Choose fabrics made from breathable natural materials such as cotton, linen or wool (perfect for summer formal occasions). If you are out in the sun, try to cover your arms and legs with clothing to avoid overheating and burning.

Breathable fabric + natural material + light colors + loose fit = COMFORT IN A HOT SUMMER

Allow yourself a loose fit. Such clothes let the air flow under them. But that doesn't mean you have to wear a size or two larger than you need to. Remember that dark colors do not reflect light, but absorb it and are therefore hotter. On a sunny day, a white cotton button-down long-sleeved shirt will be much cooler than a black polyester T-shirt.

Self care in hot weather

A man should be clean before dressing in summer clothes. A priori there should be no smell of sweat! If you need to shower twice a day, do so. Use deodorant, shampoo, and soap that smells good. Choose a men's perfume, which is especially important to use in hot weather.

Clothing should be clean and free from sweat stains. A tastefully dressed person will never wear stained clothing, even if he firmly believes that people will not notice. Do you respect yourself?

Men's Summer T-shirt

During the summer, most men choose to wear T-shirts. They belong to everyday casual clothes, therefore, it will not work to go to a serious event in it. There are T-shirts with long and short sleeves, the latter are considered to be summer T-shirts.

Typical places to wear summer t-shirts:

  • a park,
  • beach,
  • Cafe,
  • bar,
  • country house,
  • score.

When buying a summer t-shirt for men, make sure it is made from 100% cotton. It should not be translucent enough to show the outline of the body. Pay attention to the correct shape in the torso area: too loose will make you smaller than you are, while too tight will make you a tight sausage.

Think twice before wearing a T-shirt if you can wear a short or long sleeve polo. Yes, everyone wears T-shirts, but in most situations a short sleeve collared shirt is the best choice due to its versatility. Even a designer T-shirt for 5000 rubles. surpasses the polo for 1,500 rubles, because the latter has a collar – a hint of a formal dress code.

Short sleeve polo shirt

As you might guess from the name, the polo shirt first appeared on sports fields. As a rule, polo shirts are made of 100% cotton, which absorbs moisture well. This is very important when playing sports.

Typical places where polo is appropriate:

  • Job.
  • Picnic.
  • Cafe or summer restaurant.
  • Date.
  • Travel 'on business'.

Today, polo increasingly appears in men's wardrobe in the summer season. Any colors and prints are acceptable when it comes to everyday clothes. If you decide to match the smart casual or business casual dress code, then you should stick to the classic monophonic options: dark blue, green, gray, beige, white.

Short sleeve shirt with buttons

The classic shirt with short sleeves is a compromise between casual wear and a business dress code. On the one hand, the short-sleeved shirt resembles a polo. On the other hand, the shirt is made of thick cotton fabric, similar to that used for classic shirts.

The only difficulty arises when choosing the length of the short sleeves. The shorter the sleeve, the more casual the shirt is. The best choice would be a shirt with a short sleeve that overlaps the biceps by 60-70%. Pay special attention to the width of the armhole. If your arms are thin, you shouldn't buy a shirt with wide sleeves. Otherwise, you will look stupid.

Typical places where it is appropriate to wear a button-down short sleeve shirt:

  • Job.
  • Not a very formal business meeting.
  • Summer restaurant or cafe.

There are varieties of short-sleeved shirts with a casual slant. Additionally, breast pockets, patches on sleeves or shoulders (epaulettes), and other decorative elements are sewn on. In addition, shirts are made from different fabrics, different from the classic ones, using different colors and prints.

Long sleeve shirt under the suit

A long-sleeved shirt is not the best choice in a 30-degree heat, but it does correspond to a strict business dress code. The main recommendation will be about choosing light colors: light blue shirt, light purple shirt, white shirt, etc. You can diversify your wardrobe and buy a textured shirt such as Herringbone or Dobby jacquard. Read in our past publications how to buy a dress shirt.

Typical places to wear a long sleeve shirt:

  • Job.
  • Formal business meeting.
  • Summer restaurant or cafe.
  • Date.

By the way, if you feel hot in a shirt, you can roll up your sleeves in different ways.

A undershirt – protection or an extra element?

Under a shirt with short or long sleeves, you can wear an undershirt. It is made of 100% cotton and allows some protection of the shirt from moisture (perspiration). It is best to give preference to T-shirts with a V-neck. In this case, it will be possible to unfasten the top button of the shirt and the shirt will not be visible.

On the other hand, putting on another layer of clothing in the heat may seem counterintuitive. Therefore, you will have to choose what is more important: protection from sweat or more coolness. For example, for a wedding, if it takes place in the summer, I would advise you to wear a T-shirt. If you sweat a lot, bring an extra replacement tank top.

Tuck in your shirt in summer or not?

There is a lot of controversy about whether to tuck in a shirt or not. Not so long ago, I published an article on summer casual shirts, where I examined in detail which shirts are tucked in and which are not. I will not repeat myself, read the article. There are pictures for clarity.

I will only add that the unfinished look is better for young people, especially when they are wearing jeans. Men who are already FOR … better to tuck their shirts, otherwise there is a risk of looking untidy.

Summer blazer or suit

There are special occasions in the summer where you need to look the part. Weddings, parties, prom, birthdays and so on, all call for a formal dress code. In such cases, you must wear a summer jacket or suit.

Summer classic wool suit

A suit or jacket can be made from wool, cotton, linen, and various combinations of these materials. Summer woolen suits should be made of very fine wool, Super 130'S – 150'S. The durability of such a suit is not the best, but it is very comfortable to walk in it in hot weather. There are also 'Cool Wool' suits on sale. This fabric is made from merino wool, which does a great job with the heat.

Summer classic cotton suit

A cotton summer suit or blazer is the most casual option. Cotton's natural moisture-wicking properties, along with its strength and durability, make it the choice for those looking to be stylish. However, due to the tendency of jackets to wrinkle, requiring frequent attention, they are considered everyday.

Summer classic seersucker suit

Summer classic seersucker suits are a great option for a hot summer. The origin of this fabric is Indian, but now it is actively used both in Europe and on the American continents. Usually made of cotton with a striped pattern (blue, brown, gray, although there are other colors).

The peculiarity of the seersucker fabric is the low tension of the thread, where two are intertwined into one. The result is an incredible breathable fabric that allows air to flow through with ease. It should be noted that suits made of such fabric are a casual option and you should not go to a formal business meeting in it.

Summer classic linen suit

Flax, like cotton, is of vegetable origin. It has the ability to absorb moisture and dissipate it; resistant to high temperatures. However, linen fabrics are often coarse (read: fabric structure can be stiff and fluffy, rather than smooth like woolen fabric) and wrinkle easily, making them not very popular. Hence the high cost, since few factories sew such suits + low demand compared to cotton or wool.

However, despite the cost, a good linen suit or jacket is an excellent (perhaps best) escape from overheating in hot weather.

Does a summer jacket need lining?

Lining or not lining is another method of increasing the breathability of a suit or jacket. Unlined jackets are ideal for warm weather because they do without extra layers of fabric. However, in this way they are less formal and more suited to casual garments.

There are also jackets with cropped lining to allow for adequate ventilation, but this is not ideal. Such jackets are quite suitable for a business suit, the only thing is pay attention to the lining material. It must be highly hygroscopic, i.e. keep out sweat and moisture.
