Step 1. Measure the circumference of the wrist.

If you already know the approximate size of your wrist, you can skip this step. If not, take a tape measure or regular thread with a ruler to measure your wrist circumference.

___ We measure the circumference in the place where we intend to wear the watch. Sometimes men prefer to wear a watch a little closer to the wrist, sometimes a little further.

Wrist circumference: __________ cm.

___ Choosing the size of the watch. When we talk about 'watch size', we mean the size of the dial. Generally, the larger the wrist, the larger the watch should be. Watch houses and jewelers measure the size of watches in millimeters, not centimeters:

  • Small watches: up to 28 mm, more often suitable only for a woman's hand.
  • Medium watch: 29 to 38 mm, ideal for most men.
  • Large watches: from 39 to 43 mm, suitable for men with large hands.
  • Huge watches: 44 mm and more, designer watches.

Please note that the thickness of the strap also matters, so make sure that the watch looks harmonious as a whole on a man's hand.

Step 2. Decide on the type of watch.

___ Decide on the type of strap. There are several types:

  • Leather strap, softer than all sits on the arm and is considered more classic.
  • Metal strap, stronger and more modern.
  • The plastic strap is usually found on sports watches.
  • Synthetic fabric, sports watch only.

Please note that watches with a leather and metal strap are desirable (but not necessary) to be combined with other wardrobe details and accessories.

A brown leather strap should be worn under brown leather shoes. A watch with a gold strap should be matched with gold cufflinks and a tie clip. Etc.

___ Select a dial color. There are endless options:

  • Black and white are the most common colors. The white dial is considered more classic.
  • Blue, green, brown are more casual, casual options. You can choose a smart casual style.
  • Bright colors – exclusively for casual and sportswear.

___ Select a mechanism. There are three types:

  • Quartz watches are the cheapest and most common. Battery powered.
  • Mechanical watches are the most accurate and require periodic winding.
  • Mechanical self-winding – automatically wind up by hand movement.

___ Select the glass of the dial. There are three types:

  • Sapphire crystal is the heaviest and most scratch resistant; usually the most expensive option.
  • Mineral glass – moderate scratch resistance, may shatter on impact.
  • Plexiglas – lightweight and cheap glass, low scratch resistance.

___ Select additional features such as:

  • Presence / absence of non-ferrous metals, precious stones.
  • Dial thickness.
  • The total weight of the watch.
  • Skeleton or not (visibility of the movement in the watch).
  • Etc.

Step 3. Choose a place to buy watches.

___ Kind of stores:

  • Department stores – low prices, limited selection, low to medium quality watches.
  • Jewelry chain – high prices, limited selection, but generally high quality.
  • Branded stores – limited to one or more brands, often more expensive than a regular department store, but with a high level of service and service.
  • Private craftsmen – high prices, but excellent quality and exclusive models are possible.
  • Antique shops – a scattered choice, difficulty in estimating the real value of a watch, low service and no return. But, you can find antique watches for reasonable money.
  • Online stores – a huge selection of any brands, however, you should give preference to reliable stores that have been on the market for a long time. It's even better if there is a real store where you can see the watch before buying.

Step 4. Go to the store.

___ Choose the store where we are going to buy the watch (see Step 3).

___ Determine the style, color, clock mechanism (see Step 2).

___ We measure the watch and see if it fits well on the arm (see Step 1).

With the information that we have considered above, you will not have any difficulties in the store and the question of how to buy a men's watch will disappear.

Find a watch model on the Internet that you like and only then go to the store to see all the details in reality. Do not be afraid to ask the seller questions, because if you choose the wrong watch, it will lie on the shelf and collect dust.
