Accessories

People are divided into two types: those who wear gloves and those who keep their hands warm in their pockets. If you consider yourself to be of the first type or you are simply tired of freezing your fingers, then this article is especially for you! In this article, you will learn how to choose men's gloves according to your style and preferences.

When shopping for men's gloves, you should first think about their purpose. For example, if you are looking for gloves for driving, then you need leather that will have good grip on the steering wheel, and if you constantly hold a phone in your hands, then the elasticity of the material and the ability to work with a touchscreen phone are important to you. In order to determine the needs, let's talk about what kind of gloves they actually are.

Types of men's gloves

Classic men's gloves

Nothing special here – ordinary gloves with closed finger holes. They are the most popular option. For the most part, men's leather gloves are popular.

M ittens

Most people consider the only gloves to be true gloves that have separate holes for each finger, but this is not entirely correct. There is another style of gloves, which is called a mitten, or, familiar to all of us from childhood, a mitten. Yes, a mitten is a type of glove. Unlike classic gloves, mittens are usually worn to protect the hands in very cold weather.

Gloves with finger holes

Finally, there are gloves with open finger holes, which are worn for 'fine work' or in warm weather.

Types of men's gloves

In addition to the different types of gloves, there is a classification by type. Let's consider separately winter, evening, daytime and driver's gloves for men.

Men's Gloves Material

Before you buy an item, look at its label. She is your key to making the right choice of gloves. Pay attention to what percentage of fabrics the composition has.

For example, wool is well known for its insulating properties: it protects from the cold and absorbs moisture. But wool gloves wear out quickly, so you should avoid frequent contact with the environment. Leather gloves are a completely different matter, they will just as effectively protect your hands from cold and wind, and will last much longer.

And of course, gloves made from synthetic textile fibers such as nylon and polyester are popular. They have a low level of quality, but are great for an active lifestyle, such as skiing or running. Many of these may contain Gore-Tex®, a technical fiber well known for its impermeability.

Several types of leather are used when sewing gloves:

  1. Cowhide and a low price tag are very compatible things. And all because this type of leather is poorly valued, because it is too thick for sewing day or evening gloves. But if you are looking for a budget option and a harsh winter has come in your city, then such gloves will be more useful for you than ever.
  2. Suede is very durable and rough. It has a pronounced grain, which makes gloves from it very popular among the inhabitants of the northern countries.

  3. Bakers' skins are the skins of small boars from South America. It is highly appreciated for its rarity and positive qualities. It is incredibly durable, but at the same time elastic and soft material. Even if you rip a seam off your gloves, you will always be able to sew them back up – this leather will withstand everything and more.

  4. Pork is a less expensive and refined option than bakers' leather. It looks pretty much the same, but lacks strength or softness.
  5. Sheep leather is very elastic, soft to the touch and excellent resistance to wear. The gloves do not have a woolen lining, which makes them very frost-resistant.

  6. Lamb Skin – Similar to sheep skin and comes with wool on the inside. Thinner and softer than sheep skin, but still not enough to make elegant day gloves.

  7. Goat skin – these are inexpensive gloves that are hard and harsh to the touch. People often mistake goatskin for premium material because they confuse it with pashmina.
  8. Lamb (nappa lamb) – chrome tanned leather. Thin, very elastic. Only used with high quality leather gloves.

A good pair of gloves does more than just keep your hands warm. They also complement your chosen outfit. It is important for men to have at least two pairs of gloves. The first pair is in black and the second in brown. Black gloves are suitable for everyday wear, and brown for special occasions. Opt for black if you prefer to wear jeans and a short coat or jacket. If you are at the parade and you are wearing a formal suit with black boots, then brown is your color.

As I said above, leather gloves will reliably protect your hands from adverse temperatures, but do not forget about insulation.

Lining materials for mens gloves

  • Alpaca insulates better than any wool and is 7- 8 times warmer than cashmere. All this is due to its strength and a kind of air chamber inside the lining, which acts on the principle of an insulator. Read more about alpaca wool in our encyclopedia.
  • Cashmere – despite the fact that it is inferior to alpaca in terms of heat protection, is incredibly soft and truly luxurious material. Most of the high-end gloves are made with a cashmere lining. As a rule, this material has one of the highest prices on the market. Read more about cashmere in our encyclopedia.
  • Silk is luxurious to the touch, used mainly for women's gloves, but there are also men's gloves with a silk lining.
  • Wool is an affordable and functional material. But not as soft and warm as cashmere or alpaca.

How to choose the size of gloves

Glove size is indicated in three different ways: arm circumference in cm, size in French inches and lettering. The table below shows the sizes of men's gloves.

Arm girth (see) Size (inches) Letter designation
20 7.5
22 8
23 8.5 S
25 9 M
26 9.5 L

When choosing, pay attention to the length of the palm (from the tip of the middle finger to the wrist) and its width (girth of the palm in the area of the bones), as well as the length of the middle finger. Also, you can use the girth of the brush at the base.

And of course, don't forget about the material. For example, lambskin gloves are soft and durable, unlike goatskin, which in turn keeps its shape perfectly. And pay attention to how your hands look in them!

Caring for leather gloves

When putting on your gloves, do not pull on the cuff, but press gently between your fingers.

When removing – gently pull the glove on each finger until it is completely removed.

Store gloves in a horizontal position. Gloves are made of soft materials and if, for example, you stuff them in your pockets and leave them there for the summer, then don't be surprised to find many wrinkles on them. If you are walking, for example, down the street and you need to free your hands, then straighten your gloves, putting them on top of each other, and carefully tuck them into your pocket. This will keep them in shape and prevent them from taking on a wrinkled appearance.

If your gloves get wet, place them on a towel and let them dry naturally. Do not under any circumstances use a hair dryer on the radiator when drying. Also, be sure to avoid direct sunlight. If you have not been able to dry the glove properly and stains appear on it, then moisten it with water and let dry again.

If your gloves are too wrinkled, you can try smoothing them down. Place cotton wool under the iron to protect your skin from iron and make sure to set the lowest temperature! But this method takes experience, so it's best to find a dry cleaner that specializes in leather.

If your leather gloves are suddenly wrinkled or damaged from drying on the battery, wipe the gloves off with a cloth dipped in castor oil. Try to use enough castor oil so that there are no streaks or dry spots on the skin. If possible, lubricate in one layer and quickly, without stopping for a long time in the same area. Leather gloves will soon become elastic and shiny.

Etiquette

A man must take off his glove in order to shake someone's hand. An exception may be extreme cold. Also, gloves are removed when walking into the room.

Remember: gloves are removed by pulling your fingers up and nothing else.
