Mens winter hats

Accessories

Winter is on its way and the first snow is about to fall in central Russia. In anticipation of the cold season, you need to take care of protection from the cold in advance so as not to spend the New Year holidays with a temperature or a cold. Today we will talk about hats, namely which men's winter hats can be matched with a classic coat, a sports jacket or a down jacket. This will be a small guide to choosing winter hats for classic and casual clothes. Let's start.

Remember as a child, we were forced to wear winter hats when it got chilly outside. At that time, our parents were sure that it was easy to get sick without a winter headgear. Relatives said that 80-90% of the heat goes through the head. Like, the body is trying to protect the brain by all means so that it does not freeze and spends colossal energy on it.

As it turned out, this is not entirely true. Scientists have conducted a study on whether we really waste heat through our heads if we don't wear a hat. It turned out that with other open parts of the body we spend about the same amount of heat as with an open neck and head.

However, winter hats play an important role in the winter wardrobe of men and women. In order not to freeze in the cold winter, you must wear a winter hat. In addition to protecting your face and ears from freezing, the headpiece can add style to your chosen look.

Today, there is a huge variety of styles, colors and shapes of winter hats. In this article, we will try to select some of the classic and popular modern types of winter hats for men.

Winter hats – the basics

As always, dear reader, before discussing and choosing the style of a winter hat, it is necessary to disassemble several principles by which a winter hat is selected.

Features of the choice of the color of the winter hat:

  • Bright, 'acidic' colors such as orange or light green are associated with safety. The fact is that it is these colors that are easy to notice in winter, both during the day and at night; both among the trees and among the white snow. That is why bright winter hats are worn by winter sportsmen so that they can be easily noticed and saved if necessary. Alpine skiers, snowboarders, even people involved in sports hunting in winter wear brightly colored hats.

  • Other bright colors such as red, blue, cyan, purple, etc. are more casual and, as a rule, winter hats in these colors are worn at leisure to ski or snowboard in special parks or ski resorts. Bright winter hats, you can even wear them on weekends or on a shopping trip or other business. However, such brightly colored hats are not suitable for commuting.

  • Darker and more natural colors such as black, gray and brown are suitable for both casual style and business dress code. Dark winter hats are versatile.

Features of choosing a winter hat style:

  • Hats that cover your ears are considered less formal than hats that do not cover your ears. Nevertheless, if it is -20 degrees Celsius outside, there is no time for formalities and it is better to wear a 'cap with ears'.

  • Classic hats: Felt hat, Bowler hat, Homburg and so on, are more formal than the usual woolen caps with a lapel, berets or Eight-piece (wool or leather cap).

  • Winter hats made from thick and soft material are less formal than thin hats / caps made from fine wool or felt. Headwear made of knitted fabric is more suitable for casual dress code.
  • Winter hats decorated with pom-poms, fringes or other accessories will always be just a casual dress code. They set you up in a playful or frivolous way, so I do not recommend wearing such a hat anywhere except for a walk with friends or a fun sporting event / skiing or snowboarding.

Having considered some of the features of winter hats, it's time to move on to the styles of winter hats.

Classic hat (hat with lapel)

Probably, today you will not surprise anyone with an ordinary hat in your wardrobe. However, the knitted hat has several features:

  • Material: As a rule, hats are made from knitted wool, cotton or synthetics. Sometimes hats are made from fleece material, which is used by athletes.
  • The shape is round and symmetrical.
  • Style can be with or without a lapel. It is believed that with a lapel the ears are better protected from wind and cold, as a double fold is obtained.

The style of the hat can range from fully fitting to the head and covering the ears to slightly fixed at the crown of the head. The latter are similar to the skullcap, which is popular in Central Asia.

In addition to the classic shapes, there are slightly elongated, conical hats that are pulled tightly on the top of the head, but are gathered in folds at the back of the head. These hats are very popular with snowboarders who love loose and stylish clothing.

In addition to shape and style, hats are decorated with pom-poms, tassels, various knots and other decorative elements.

A winter hat for men is a practical solution for winter, especially if the hat is black and made of medium-thick textile material. It is easy to put such a hat in a pocket and not wrinkle, which cannot be said about a cap or a hat.

As for the material, natural wool can be called the best. There are also hats made of fleece or other synthetic knitted material, which evaporates excess moisture and does not allow you to freeze during sports in winter. There is also a mixed, two-layer version of the hat – the outer layer is wool and the inner lining is made of synthetic material.

In addition to standard shapes and materials, which are most often found, there are interesting hats from different nations and countries of the world. For example, the 'Chullo' hat from South America, made of Alpaca wool, has an unusual shape. This hat is also called the 'Peruvian hat'. The 'Chullo' hat completely covers the head and ears, while the traditional Peruvian pattern is depicted on the entire surface: figures of animals, birds or various forms of ornament. These hats have been worn in the mountainous regions of the Andes for hundreds of years.

Hats can also be divided into summer, demi and winter hats.

  • Summer hats are decorative and are sewn from linen or cotton. Summer hats are worn by stylish young people, sometimes even indoors.
  • Demi-season hats protect from wind and light rain turning into snow. As a rule, such hats are sewn from mixed materials – wool and synthetics.
  • Winter hats protect against strong wind and cold. A good winter hat is made only from natural wool.

Based on the foregoing, we can conclude that an ordinary hat is most often suitable only for casual style and is not entirely suitable for a business dress code. However, when it's -15 or -20 degrees Celsius outside the window, I'm sure you can forget about the formalities and put on a warm woolen hat with closed ears and strings around your neck. Or are you ready to freeze in the name of style? =)

Hat with ear flaps

The biggest drawback of classic knitted hats (apart from the aforementioned 'Chullo' hat) is the incomplete coverage of the chin, cheeks and ears. A hat with earflaps copes with the listed disadvantages like no other hat. Two lateral set-back headphones – 'ears' cover the entire head area, excluding the face and are tied in the chin area. In addition, the 'ears' of the cap can be tied on top of the cap with earflaps.

There are many styles of earflaps, but a good earflap should have:

  1. Thick fur (usually on the outside and on the inside).
  2. Flexible fold-down 'ears' that cover the ears and cheeks.
  3. The ability to wear a hat with both tied and untied ears.

In addition, some caps with earflaps have a visor, which further insulates the forehead and slightly covers the eyes from the sun's rays.

During World War II, pilots wore leather earflaps. Some models even had built-in goggles if the pilot was in the open cockpit.

A cap with earflaps is one of the warmest hats and at the same time more formal than a regular knitted hat. Due to the long military past, when the entire army of the USSR (and now Russia) wore caps with earflaps, we willy-nilly associate the headdress with the long coat worn by the soldiers. Therefore, it is quite appropriate to wear a hat with earflaps under a business suit and coat, the main thing is to stick to the classic black color.

As for the materials, let the animal lovers throw tomatoes at me, but there is nothing better than natural fur. It is in the west at -5 degrees Celsius you can shout that artificial fur is replacing natural. And in our latitudes, where -40 is not uncommon, only natural wool and natural fur will protect you from the cold.

Hat from Karakul

Karakul is another Soviet legacy. Karakul is the fur of a young lamb, of the Karakul breed, which is bred in Central Asia. This fur is very soft, but dense, able to protect against strong wind and cold.

Due to the rich cultural diversity in the Soviet Union, Karakul hats were made in different styles and cuts. For example, a round hat from Karakul with a double lapel was popular among party members of the Central Committee of the CPSU. The astrakhan hat and black coat with an astrakhan collar became the symbols of the Soviet nomenklatura. Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev himself was very fond of wearing hats from Karakul and more than once appeared in it in front of cameras.

Besides the Soviet Union, Karakul hats are traditionally worn in Afghanistan and Pakistan. These hats are called Jinnah Cap, after the founding father of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinn.

It is worth noting that Karakul hats are worn not only on our mainland, but also in North America, and more precisely in the Canadian Mounted Police. However, the hats are made of a material that looks like Karakul fur, but it is not real fur.

The astrakhan hat is quite versatile and can even be worn with a business suit and a classic coat, especially if the latter has an astrakhan collar.

Woolen cap

Next in line is the 'postman's cap', as it is called in the West, or the Woolen Cap. This winter hat is suitable for any style, be it a classic coat or a leather jacket.

Woolen cap Woolen cap

The winter version of the cap differs from the autumn-spring only in the thickness of the material from which it is made.

It is worth noting that the cap does not cover its ears or neck, so it can be worn up to -5 degrees Celsius, not lower.

Felt hats

For a business style, felt hats, Homburg or Fedora hats are perfect, as they are made from a rather thick woolen material. Some winter models have fold-over ear pads, suggesting that a scarf will cover the front and back of the neck.

Actually, the felt hat with fold-over ears is the most formal and austere type of winter headgear that will suit both a classic suit and a coat. This look will look appropriate on any continent.

Hat with a beard

I could not pass by the original winter headdress – a hat with a beard. Of course, you won't go to a business meeting in it and you won't put on a classic coat. However, going for a walk in an ordinary sports jacket or down jacket, such a hat is a great reason to amuse yourself and those around you. Believe me, such hats will definitely attract attention.

Please note that beard hats are not just another 'fun beanie'. She is quite capable of protecting almost the entire face and neck from the cold.

Head & Neck Accessories

In addition to headwear, there are accessories that also serve to protect the head and neck from the cold. Let's list them:

Balaclava mask

A balaclava is a headgear that covers the entire head and neck, leaving openings for the eyes and sometimes the mouth.

Balaclava mask Balaclava mask

Balaklava is popular with racers and ski athletes. Balaclava properties can be different. For example, balaclavas are specially designed for racers to absorb moisture and hold the helmet tightly. For alpine skiers, in addition to absorbing moisture, protection from the cold is important.

Of course, the balaclava is a specialized headgear and is not suitable for everyday wear.

Headband scarf

Another specialized accessory, only for the neck. In its shape, the bandage scarf resembles a sock with a cropped toe. The scarf is made, as a rule, from synthetic fleece. This is a very convenient accessory, as it excludes the possibility of passing cold to the neck and there is constant thermoregulation.

Headband scarf Headband scarf

It is worth noting that on sale I saw similar headband scarves made of woolen fabric. They are quite suitable for a classic coat instead of a regular scarf. In essence, it will look like a slightly protruding turtleneck.

Ski goggles

When you're skiing on the side of a mountain, it's impossible to imagine a person without ski goggles. As soon as you pick up speed or get caught in the snow, snowflakes of snow will fly into your eyes at high speed, which will turn into a huge problem in 2-3 minutes.

Ski goggles Ski goggles

The only drawback is that the glasses are only suitable for sports. In everyday life, such glasses will look ridiculous.

Scarf

Finishing the topic of accessories for the head and neck, it is worth mentioning the usual scarf. We already had articles on how to choose a scarf for a man and how to tie a scarf in 6 ways, so I will be short. Choosing the right scarf and the style of the knot for the scarf – you can make an option that is suitable for a classic coat and a casual option for a sports jacket or down jacket.

Hat under men's coat

Having considered all the options for winter hats, doubts may remain in choosing a headdress for a men's coat. The global network has recommendations for girls and women, especially if they choose a hat for a fur coat. Unfortunately, there is not much information for men. Let's fix the situation. For convenience of choice, I will divide hats to coats by atmospheric temperature.

Temperature from +10 to 0 ° C

This temperature starts from the middle of October, approximately to the beginning of December. During this period, there are also sunny money and rather cloudy windy nights.

For fall and early winter, the best headdresses include:

  • felt hat,
  • woolen cap (especially if it has folding “ears”);
  • a thin woolen hat without cuffs.

Temperature from 0 to -10 ° C

Such a temperature reshim occurs throughout the winter, right up to early spring, when the buds on the trees are about to swell. In such weather, a felt hat will barely fit and you need to wear a warm hat. In the arsenal of a man in such weather, there should be:

  • thick woolen hat (you can even have a lapel, for better protection of the ears from the cold);
  • caps with “ears”;
  • light hat with earflaps.

Temperature from -10 to -20 ° C

Such cold snaps happen several times a winter, so it is worth preparing for them in advance. To reliably protect your head from the cold, the following hats are best suited:

  • hat with earflaps with fur inside (tanned leather);
  • astrakhan hat.

Temperature from -20 ° C

In short-term frosts, as well as for the regions of the extreme north, absolute protection from the cold is necessary. When it's -25 ° C outside, you don't have to wear a regular hat. The best option for a similar temperature would be the following men's hats:

  • hat with earflaps with fur outside;
  • astrakhan hat.

Finally

As I said, it is enough for a man to have 2 hats for constant use and 2-3 scarves for different tasks and color combinations. You will need more accessories if you are doing winter sports or occasionally ice skating, skiing in the woods.

I wish you good luck and hope you will not freeze even in the most severe frost!
