Choose clothes for newborns while you have the opportunity to go shopping, i.e. during pregnancy. When doing this, take into account the brand, product material and accessories, as well as the season and the growth of the baby.
Which manufacturers of children's clothing are better
Clothes for newborns should be comfortable: without tight elastic bands on the arms and legs, with external or soft internal seams and secure fasteners. Make sure that it does not crush, rub or cause irritation, and the fabric and threads used in sewing are made from environmentally friendly and natural materials, ideally 100% cotton.
To protect your baby and be confident in the choice, buy products from only those brands that have earned the trust of consumers.
The best manufacturers are:
Lucky child. Russian brand that produces clothes for the little ones. The products meet the requirements of Russian GOSTs and have quality certificates. Clothes for newborns are sewn exclusively from 100% cotton and use water-based paints in their production, which eliminates the occurrence of allergies.
Huppa is a well-known Estonian manufacturer of winter and demi-season clothing that breathes, does not get wet or blown out. For newborns, Huppa offers a wide selection of jumpsuits, envelopes and hats, but the products are usually designed for babies in size 62, i.e. large newborns or babies 1–3 months old. Huppa products are recognized by the EU Commission as safe for children.
Reima. World renowned manufacturer of children's clothing. The company's products are sold in more than 70 countries, and the materials from which the products are sewn are tested for quality, strength, durability and safety.
Lassie. In 1980, Reima bought the Lassie company. Therefore, Lassie products are of the same quality as Reima. The company manufactures transformer overalls, mittens and booties for newborns.
Little star. A Russian brand that occupies a leading position in the sale of children's clothing in the domestic market. The company offers a huge range of products for newborns: bodysuits, bonnets, sandbags, envelopes, diapers, etc. All Little Star products are certified.
How to determine clothing size
The size of the clothes is determined by the height of the baby. If you buy new clothes during pregnancy, you can calculate the height and weight of a newborn based on the results of an ultrasound scan.
According to the standard marking, sizes for newborns can be 50, 56 and 62 cm. On average, the growth of a baby is 50–56 cm, which means that size 56 is suitable for him. Sometimes a baby is born large (about 58 cm), and he needs to buy clothes of 62 sizes. If the baby was born prematurely, and its height is about 48 cm, new clothes of size 50 will be needed.
When buying, keep in mind that the baby will soon grow up and in a month he will need more clothes. Therefore, you should not buy a lot of small items, you may not even have time to use them.
Hats and caps should be chosen taking into account the baby's head circumference. It can be 32-40 cm. In most cases the size will be 36th or 38th.
The size of the socks is determined by the length of the foot, i.e. if the length is 9 cm, then socks are needed in size 9. But it will not be superfluous to buy more products for growth.
What clothes will the baby need
A newborn's body cannot maintain a certain body temperature, so the baby can easily become hypothermic or overheated. To prevent this, you need to use special clothing that protects from the sun, wind and other environmental factors. Therefore, in the first months of life, the baby will need overalls, bodysuits, socks, sliders and undershirts, caps and scratches.
Children need these products at any time of the year. Short models are suitable for summer and when it's hot at home, and long-sleeved bodysuits are a great help in the cold season. They can be worn together with sliders and pants, and can be put under the overalls.
Choose bodysuits that can be easily removed or put on (for example, with buttons). This will make it easier for you to change your baby's clothes or change the diaper.
For summer kids you will need two or three short-sleeved bodysuits, for winter ones – two long-sleeved models, for spring or autumn ones – two long-sleeved and two short-sleeved ones.
The newborn's head should be closed while walking and after taking a bath. Therefore, caps and hats will come in handy. They protect the baby's head from wind, sun and other unfavorable natural conditions, and also prevent hypothermia of the fontanelle.
For the first time, two or three cotton caps will be enough for the baby. If you use a woolen or knitted hat, put a thin cotton cap under it so that your baby does not develop allergies.
Overalls are made from fabrics of different density and can be designed for different seasons. There are warm models with long sleeves and pants, and there are products with cropped sleeves and pants. Such overalls are also called slips or men.
For newborns, choose products with buttons – thanks to this, the clothes can be easily removed, changed the diaper and re-dressed the baby.
Overalls are also sold as outerwear. In their production, waterproof and windproof materials and insulation are usually used: down, wool or synthetic winterizer.
If the baby was born in winter, you will need two warm little men (for example, from a footer or velor), two or three lighter models and a jumpsuit with insulation. For autumn and spring children, three light little men and an insulated overalls will be enough, and for summer children – two sleepsuits.
There are sliders-pants and sliders with a breast and a back, which are fixed on the shoulders with buttons, ties or buttons.
Pants are not recommended for children whose navel has not yet healed, as the elastic band can rub the sore spot. They are also not suitable for children who begin to actively move and crawl. The pants slip and get in the way of the cub. Models with breast and back are more suitable for crawling babies. In this case, it is better to choose products that are fixed on the shoulders with buttons.
It is unacceptable to use models in which the baby bends his toes or knees, i.e. the length of the foot and legs of the product does not match the baby's legs. In this case, it must be taken into account that the baby's bottom in diapers fits freely in the sliders.
For babies born in winter, summer, autumn or spring, two sliders are enough for the first time.
They look like blouses, but they have no clasps. They are convenient to put on, but they often get confused, twisted and create discomfort for the baby. In principle, it is not necessary to buy undershirts. They can be replaced with bodysuits and jumpsuits. Most mums use undershirts only for swaddling.
Newborns born in summer, fall or spring may need about two undershirts.
The baby will need socks both in winter and summer. Cotton products, as a rule, do not hold well on a small leg, but if you choose a cotton product with an admixture of synthetics, the baby will not lose his socks.
Mittens or scratches
Newborns grow marigolds very quickly, so they can accidentally scratch themselves. To protect the cub from its 'raging' pens, you need to put on scratches. For the first time, one or two pairs of mittens will be enough for a small butuz.
