9 best remedies for pinworms, or how to properly treat enterobiasis

Review of the best according to the editorial board. On the selection criteria. This material is subjective and does not constitute advertising and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before buying, you need to consult with a specialist.

For more than two million years of its development, man has gone on a colossal path. For almost all these years, he stubbornly turned from ape-like ancestors into a man. He mastered upright posture, the brain volume was constantly increasing, and about forty thousand years ago, man acquired his modern appearance. Then the rapid development of scientific and technological progress began. Man subjugated fire, invented the wheel and written language, and the alphabet appeared. We currently live in the era of the Internet, real-life quantum computers, smart homes, visited the Moon and Mars.

But alas! At the same time, we still have not been able to cope with parasites, ordinary small worms, including pinworms, the causative agents of enterobiasis. Unlike the 'king of nature', pinworms have neither a head (only the head end) nor a brain. All they can do is to cling to life with tremendous perseverance, using all the resources that allow maintaining the pinworm population even among the most civilized peoples (animals and birds do not get enterobiasis). Many have already guessed that today's conversation will focus on how to properly treat enterobiasis, that is, the invasion of pinworms.

This article is somewhat different from all similar drug reviews, since it is simply not enough to list even the most effective drugs for enterobiasis. Even if you fanatically follow the instructions, it is impossible to get rid of pinworms with just drugs alone. The reason for this is the phenomenon of human self-infection, the most powerful tool for pinworms in the struggle for survival. To properly recover from enterobiasis, you need to find out what self-infection is and what mechanisms it is implemented by.

Self-infection: a powerful survival mechanism

Those helminths that can infect one and the same host without needing other organisms for their development have a colossal advantage. After all, once having fallen into the final host, which releases eggs into the external environment, under favorable conditions they make it a lifelong source of eggs, in which more than one generation of worms lives, but more and more new ones – dozens of generations replacing each other.

Take opisthorchiasis, the causative agent of which is a feline fluke. Adult opisthorchis live in the liver, and they secrete eggs, which come out with human feces. But even if you constantly deal with the feces of a sick person, then it is theoretically impossible to become infected with opisthorchiasis. In order for the infection to occur, the eggs must enter a freshwater reservoir, go through a number of development stages. So, the intermediate host should be a fish of the cyprinid family with ripe opisthorchus metacercariae in their 'fish meat'. Only fish that is not well thermally processed is dangerous to humans. The eggs of the opisthorchus are completely safe for us, just like the eggs of bovine tapeworm, pork tapeworm and many other flat and tapeworms.

Pinworms are a completely different story. Pinworms lay their eggs in the area around the anus, and a person (most often a child) brushes this area at night, because he feels severe itching. Accordingly, microscopic pinworm eggs fall under his nails, and he calmly sends these infected hands together with toys into his mouth during the day.

Imagine that at this time, even the most modern anthelmintic drugs will be treated, which will destroy all pathogens in the intestines inside the human body. But if at least a few dozen eggs of pinworms remain under the nails, laid on the night before the treatment, and avoiding the destructive effect of the medicine, then they end up in the mouth, and self-infection will occur. In the end, though, the drug worked, but only on a part of the population, and therefore became useless.

What is this lengthy introduction for? In order for the reader to pay close attention not only to the description of medications, but also to follow the hygiene rules during the treatment of enterobiasis, which will help avoid self-infection and radically get rid of parasites.

Who are the pinworms?

Pinworms are small, and, in general, 'almost' harmless worms. They do not lead to serious and even fatal complications, such as roundworms or trichinella. Roundworms crawling from the esophagus into the larynx in a ball can simply suffocate a person during sleep, blocking the airways. Trichinella, hundreds and thousands of deposited in the muscles, cause toxic – anaphylactic shock. Pinworms are much smarter. An innate instinct, so to speak about creatures without a brain, tells them that the owner and the environment must be protected, and not taken to extremes. He must live as long as possible in order to constantly release eggs.

Therefore, enterobiasis is 'delicate'. This is the most common helminthic invasion in terms of the number of cases both in the Russian Federation and in countries around the world. When you hear the expression 'they found worms in our baby', then almost always, almost 100%, we are talking about pinworms. Pinworms, or enterobias, are dioecious parasites, and one end of them is slightly pointed, which is why they were called pinworms. Their body length is small, but females can be easily distinguished from males: females are up to a centimeter long, males are half as long.

Adult parasites attach to the intestinal wall and feed on its contents, but they can also feed on blood, but they themselves do not damage the intestinal wall, unlike hookworms, and do not cause anemia. Pinworms themselves live in the area of the large intestine, and at the same time in adults – without symptoms, usually there is no pain. Of course, parasites can cause allergic symptoms, itching is pronounced, which especially worries babies.

As mentioned above, eggs are laid in the perianal folds, and there they develop, and after 6 hours, larvae appear from the eggs. They crawl back into the anus, enter the intestines, and develop into adult worms, the cycle repeats. At the same time, pinworm eggs are also actively swallowed, and they enter the intestines, thus, from all sides. In this case, self-infection also occurs from two sides.

Who can get enterobiasis: epidemiology

Most often, young children get sick and are able to maintain the persistence of pinworms in their bodies for a long time, especially when they are grouped together, for example, in a nursery and in the younger group of kindergarten. Children are not yet accustomed to the rules of personal hygiene, they often put their hands in their mouths, and this method of periodic self-infection makes it possible to expand the invasion to many babies.

The second important factor is that the eggs of pinworms are very viable, and they do not die right there, once in the external environment, but also retain the ability to invade for up to a month outside the organisms. By abundantly seeding children's toys, objects in the room, bedding, they pose a threat not only to children, but also to adults. Let's single out those risk groups of babies who are most often susceptible to helminthic invasions in general, and enterobiasis in particular, children:

  1. without hygiene skills that pull their hands into their mouths, mainly in younger age groups,
  2. from unsanitary and asocial families who live 'in mud';
  3. with poor health, often ill, who have low, including antihelminthic immunity;
  4. with delayed physical and mental development;
  5. who were artificially fed and did not receive real breast milk with protective factors – secretory immunoglobulins.

Finally, it should not be forgotten that 'Caesareans' are less adaptable than children 'received' as a result of physiological childbirth, as well as children whose mothers had aggravated factors of pregnancy.

By the way, enterobiasis is a strict anthroponosis, which means that only people get sick with it. No animals, snails, birds and animals are capable of being a source of infection. Of course, animals can be sources of very dangerous and even deadly helminthiasis, such as echinococcosis and especially alveococcosis. But as far as pinworms are concerned, everything is calm here. You don't have to worry that during the treatment the worms will 'crawl' onto the dog and cat, and then back onto the child.

Clinical picture

It was said above that pinworms do not cause any severe and acute abdominal pain, and in adults, the disease most often really goes away without symptoms. Indeed, in an adult, the immune defense is mature, and pinworms are still not as dangerous as some other types of helminths. And yet, for children, especially those with a weakened immune system, pinworms are dangerous, causing an allergic – toxic clinical picture, which consists of the following symptoms and signs:

  1. the child is worried about discomfort in the abdomen, near the navel, and weak, wandering, mild pain;
  2. there is an alternation of diarrhea, constipation and bloating – signs of intestinal dyspepsia associated with secondary dysbiosis;
  3. the symptoms of gastric dyspepsia are also disturbing. These are nausea and lack of appetite, belching and nausea, most often these signs are observed in a child in the morning;
  4. long-term enterobiasis causes increased fatigue and irritability. The child becomes whiny, due to pronounced itching in the anus, he does not sleep well;
  5. bruxism can be considered a sign of helminthiasis. This is the name of the creak of teeth in a dream, which occurs not only in a child, but also in adults, and is clearly audible at a distance;
  6. pinworms can not only crawl out of the anus onto the skin to lay eggs there, but also migrate a little further from the anus. Therefore, they can crawl into the genital tract of girls, and cause nonspecific microbial vulvovaginitis there, and if there are infections such as pyelonephritis or cystitis, then they are prone to periodic exacerbation against the background of enterobiasis;
  7. a long course of enterobiasis leads to a lag in physical development, the child loses weight;
  8. in the study of a general blood test, a characteristic symptom of helminthiasis is an increase in the number of eosinophils over 5% when calculating the leukoformula.

Of all this set of numerous symptoms and signs, one of the main ones that directly indicates pinworm infestation is severe itching in the anus at night. Why do pinworms lay eggs not in the intestines, but outside? Yes, simply because the developing larvae need air oxygen. Within a few hours, by the morning, the eggs mature, and after hatching of the larvae, potential infection is possible. If pinworms did not cause severe itching, then the child would not have insomnia, irritability and tearfulness.

But the harm of itchy skin is not only this. This is the most important factor in self-infection through the mouth and getting into other people, when the eggs of pinworms capable of development fall under the nails, and then into the mouth. In addition, a child with chronic microbial skin lesions, with impetigo, with streptoderma, can also bring in a secondary microbial infection when calculating.

Why do pinworms lay eggs and cause itching at night? Is there a kind of biological clock inside the organisms of worms? Naturally there are. At night, a person does not eat, and the concentration of nutrients in the intestines becomes different. But the most important thing is that the sphincter of the anus is able to relax at night, and it is much easier for a fertilized female to crawl out than during the day. The person is at rest, and nothing prevents pinworms from laying their eggs. The number of eggs laid by one female ranges from 10 to 15 thousand. The female lays eggs only once in her entire life, and then she dies.

Diagnosis of enterobiasis

Diagnosis of enterobiasis is very simple, and its reliability is close to 100%. Unlike opisthorchus, there are always a lot of pinworms, and they helpfully lay their eggs not inside, but outside. This compares favorably with opisthorchiasis. With opisthorchiasis, sometimes fecal analyzes are completely uninformative, it is necessary to repeatedly analyze the duodenal contents and probe, which, of course, exhausts the patient.

In order to diagnose enterobiasis, expensive blood tests are not needed at all, and no special financial costs. It is necessary to make a scraping from the perianal folds, and before carrying out the scraping, you should not wash yourself away, and you should not wash the child so as not to wash off these eggs. This scraping can be modified, and such an analysis is called an imprint of the perianal folds on adhesive tape, this is a common medical hypoallergenic tape.

It is relatively useless to look for pinworm eggs in feces, so donating feces is not recommended. After all, females attach eggs with special glue to the perianal folds so that they do not go anywhere, do not get lost, and do not come out with feces. Therefore, it is possible to donate feces for eggs to worms if you suspect pinworms, and it is useless, if eggs are found there, then in very small quantities, and outside the feces, having accidentally hit them. Scraping and tape imprinting from perianal folds is equally reliable, safe and painless for both young children and adults. How to treat enterobiasis correctly?

The most important thing is to be ready to conduct merciless, serious and very thorough secondary prevention together with the beginning of drug treatment. The goals of this prevention are to prevent pinworm eggs from falling on objects and hands of a child and an adult, and then – to prevent them from entering the mouth.

Drug therapy

Unlike numerous drugs (for the treatment of inflammation, heart rhythm disturbances, antibiotics), there are relatively few drugs for the treatment of enterobiasis. They can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The medicine should actively affect not only adult worms, but prevent the development of larvae, and destroy the eggs of parasites, which is especially difficult, since the eggs are usually very well protected. Adult worms are most easily affected. This can be inhibition of glucose transfer, muscle paralysis, and as a result, the worms become unable to contract and attach to the intestinal walls.

Such worms, paralyzed at the level of neuromuscular endings, easily leave the intestines. If it were not for the phenomenon of self-infection and the presence of eggs in the external environment, then there would be no problems with treatment at all. All existing remedies are very effective, well tolerated, and after they are taken, the parasites do not begin to actively leave the intestines and 'creep away, disturbed', this is very important. A person during treatment does not become more dangerous to those around him.

But in the event that the eggs do get into the environment (which happens almost always), then the danger of infection persists for up to 2 weeks. Therefore, an immutable rule for the treatment of enterobiasis is a repeated course of treatment after 2 or 3 weeks, and this is especially important when it is not possible to comply with all preventive and hygienic measures. Usually, it is necessary to take all the medicines within 4-5 days, since it is this duration of the course that not only covers the death of one adult generation, but also destroys those larvae that mature in the intestines and could be swallowed after taking the drug. What kind of drugs are these?

Mebendazole (Vermox, Wormin, Helmindazole)

Popularity rating: 4.9

Mebendazole (Vermox, Wormin, Helmindazole)

Mebendazole is one of the main drugs for enterobiasis, it affects the metabolism of glucose in the tissues of parasites, depletes their energy supply. As a result of inhibition of the synthesis of energy substrates, worms are immobilized and freely leave the body. In addition to pinworm infestation, this remedy is universal for helminthiasis caused by round and tapeworms, including some forms of echinococcosis. It is prescribed for the treatment of enterobiasis in babies under 5 years old strictly by body weight: 5 mg per kilogram of weight per day, and for children over 5 years old – 10 mg daily. It is not recommended to prescribe it to babies up to two years old. The Hungarian company Gedeon Richter produces mebendazole in the form of Vermox, and 6 tablets of 100 mg each will cost from 80 to 110 rubles, in November 2019 prices.

Advantages and disadvantages

The drug is not recommended for pregnant women, especially in the first trimester, during breastfeeding, with ulcerative lesions of the intestines, liver failure, It is also rare, but there are side effects such as urticaria, eczema, nausea and abdominal discomfort, dizziness. And if the medicine is used in high doses and for a very long time, for example, in severe forms of echinococcosis and alveococcosis, then alopecia occurs – hair loss. There are also symptoms of overdose. If Vermox is prescribed to a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus who injects himself with insulin, then it must be remembered that the need for insulin while taking the drug will be somewhat reduced.

Pirantel (Helmintox)

Popularity rating: 4.8

Pirantel (Helmintox)

Pirantel is also a modern, inexpensive drug, its action is based on neuromuscular blocking of impulse transmission, the subsequent paralysis of helminths, which makes it possible to expel them. At the same time, no excitement of worms, their stimulation and spreading is observed. Pirantel acts both against adults of both sexes, and on larvae, and other immature forms with nematodes, that is, with an invasion of roundworms, which include pinworms. Therefore, in addition to enterobiasis, Pirantel is a good treatment for ascariasis, and rare infestations – trichocephalosis, ankylostomiasis, and so on. It is necessary to prescribe Pirantel for pinworm infestation once, at a dose of 10 mg per kilogram of body weight, for both adults and children. Pirantel is produced by various manufacturers, and its analogue Helmintox is produced in France. The cost of Pirantel is quite low. Tablets 250 mg 3 pieces produced in Poland will not cost more than 40 rubles, and a suspension of 250 ml, also produced in Poland, will not cost more than 65 rubles.

Advantages and disadvantages

Even abroad, Pirantel is considered a first-line drug for the treatment of enterobiasis. Its effectiveness is very high, from 95 to 100%, and the drug is very well tolerated. In addition to tablets, there is a suspension form that is very well accepted by children, because it has a pleasant peach flavor. So, babies do not have any negative emotions, the price of Pirantel, like that of tablets and suspensions, is very attractive with high quality, and in pharmacies it is widespread everywhere.

It is very convenient to dispense the suspension, since there is a measuring spoon and a special scale of divisions. This allows you to choose any amount of medication for the adult and for the child. Finally, the suspension can be prescribed for babies from the age of six months. However, despite the good tolerance, contraindications should also be considered. This is severe myasthenia gravis, pregnancy, caution should be exercised when treating patients with liver failure. You also need to remember that you can not prescribe a laxative to try to expel worms after taking the medicine. You can not take Pirantel and its analogues in pregnant women, And if we are talking about the treatment of a nursing mother, then for the duration of the drug it is necessary to suspend breastfeeding. Also, various side effects are possible, ranging from nausea and vomiting, and ending with an increase in transaminases, dizziness, and hyperthermia.

Levamisole (Decaris)

Popularity rating: 4.8

This drug also blocks neuromuscular transmission, and is used for various forms of nematode invasion, including enterobiasis. The drug is prescribed once, for adults – one tablet of 150 mg, and for children – according to the body weight regimens. After a week, two or three, you can repeat the drug intake. Decaris is also inexpensive, produced in Hungary by Gedeon Richter, and packaging costs no more than 82 rubles.

Advantages and disadvantages

However, one should not rely on the cheapness of the drug, all antihelminthic drugs are relatively inexpensive. The fact is that according to modern data, the effectiveness of Decaris is gradually decreasing, and, unlike Pirantel, a single dose of the drug causes the elimination of parasites in only 56% of cases. Therefore, if possible, other drugs should be used. You also need to take into account side effects, for example, the incompatibility of the drug with the intake of alcoholic beverages – a teturam-like reaction occurs.

Sorbents and eubiotics

Do not think that drug therapy for helminthiasis is limited only to etiotropic treatment, that is, the effect on the cause – drugs directly expelling helminths. After all, worms form a habitat around themselves, which means that they emit toxic substances, various allergens, their waste products, and so on. As a result, a large amount of toxins accumulates in the intestine, the number of representatives of the normal microbiota decreases, and dysbiosis develops. Therefore, after the effect of the anthelmintic drug has manifested itself and the parasites are destroyed, it is necessary to restore order in the intestines. For this, various modern sorbents for adults and children, and eubiotics serve.

Enterosgel sweet

Popularity rating: 4.9

Enterosgel sweet

Enterosgel, or polymer of polymethylsiloxane, is simply a translucent paste without color, no taste, and absolutely no smell. It is this completely neutral gamut that makes it very difficult for some patients to swallow a spoonful of Enterosgel, or drink it in an aqueous solution, and nausea occurs. Therefore, in order to give Enterosgel any flavor 'notes', a sweet taste and some aroma are added to it. This makes it attractive to children.

Enterosgel absorbs toxins, envelops, removes allergens, and stimulates the intestines. It can be used not only after helminthic invasions, but also after intestinal infections, with various allergic diseases and with a high level of bilirubin in the blood, with chronic renal failure.

It is necessary to take it for children under the age of 5 – half a tablespoon 3 times a day, up to 14 years old – one tablespoon three times a day, and for adults a single dose is increased to one and a half, or even 2 tablespoons. It is advisable not to take Enterosgel in the form of a paste, but thoroughly dissolve it in a glass of water and drink it separately from food and other medications – 2 hours before or after meals. Enterosgel is widely distributed in all pharmacies, and a large tube of 225 g can be purchased at a price of 360 to 580 rubles. It is produced by Silma in Russia and Creoma in Ukraine.

Advantages and disadvantages

Enterosgel has practically no contraindications, except for intestinal atony, and chronic atonic constipation, individual intolerance. It can be used even in pregnant and lactating women, and even in babies. If the patient has symptoms of severe hepatic or renal failure, aversion to the drug, nausea and even vomiting may gradually develop, but such cases are quite rare. Perhaps the main problem is the misuse of the drug, when medicines or food are accidentally taken simultaneously with it. As a result, Enterosgel loses its activity, therefore, you need to carefully monitor the separate intake regimen.

Lactofiltrum is a combined preparation that belongs to enterosorbents and consists of two subunits – lignin and lactulose. Lignin is a component of wood, has a high activity and binds toxins, allergens and many substances in the intestine that contribute to the development of endotoxicosis, including helminth allergens and the results of their vital activity. Lactulose is a substrate for the nutrition of normal microflora, its supplement allows you to successfully treat dysbiosis. Lactulose in the large intestine is broken down, with the emergence of many short-chain organic acid molecules, and this leads to suppression of the growth of pathogenic microflora. In addition, lactulose stimulates stool, peristalsis, increasing osmotic pressure. The drug is prescribed for adults and children over 12 years of age, 3 tablets 3 times a day, and for younger children – according to medical schemes. The course of treatment lasts from 2 to 3 weeks. A pack of 60 capsules, which for adults is designed for one week of use, will cost from 280 to 530 rubles.

Advantages and disadvantages

The medicine is complex, it allows you to immediately correct dysbiosis and remove toxins, but at the same time it is contraindicated in case of intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal bleeding, severe allergic reactions. Therefore, a patient with an exacerbation of peptic ulcer and a sharp decrease in intestinal tone cannot be prescribed this drug. But the official instruction does not give any contraindications to pregnant and lactating women. Just as in the previous case, it is necessary to follow the rules of separate intake, and apply Laktofiltrum without other drugs and without eating food.

Popularity rating: 4.7

Enterol is a modern monocomponent eubiotic that contains saccharomycetes, that is, medicinal yeast. They fight pathogenic microorganisms, have antidiarrheal effects and normalize microflora. An important role belongs to Saccharomycetes in increasing the local immune defense of the intestine, since they increase the secretion of immunoglobulins and have an antitoxic effect. The reception of Enterol is shown during and after anthelmintic therapy.

Unlike antibiotics, which have a detrimental effect, including on beneficial microorganisms, anthelmintic drugs designed to eliminate pinworms do not affect them, because anthelminthic drugs are created to fight multicellular worms, and not bacteria at all.

Enterol should be used for babies under 3 years old – one capsule twice a day for 5 days, diluting the contents of the capsule in warm water or fruit mixture, and from 3 years old and adults – 1 capsule, or one powder twice a day for 10 days. Enterol is produced by the French company Biocodex, and one package of 30 capsules of 250 mg will cost from 510 to 840 rubles.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantage of Enterol is the high quality of European production. However, the disadvantage is that it contains only one type of microorganism, and also has a fairly high price. Also, a great advantage of Enterol can be considered good tolerance, the only thing that it can cause from side effects is mild discomfort in the stomach area, which soon passes and does not require discontinuation of the drug.

Hilak-Forte is a basic remedy that must be taken before any eubiotic, after drug therapy, and after helminthic invasion. Hilak-Forte does not contain any beneficial microorganisms, but it contains the habitat of these microbes, and ensures their high-quality and fast colonization. Therefore, it is indicated for use not only after acute intestinal infections, helminthic invasions and various forms of dysbiosis, but also after a course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in oncology, while living in ecologically unfavorable areas, with various types of gastritis, constipation and other functional disorders of the digestive system. Hilak-Forte contains substrates of the metabolism of E. coli, common fecal streptococcus and two types of lactobacilli.

The medicine is sold in drops, which need to be taken by adults, 40-60 drops per dose 3 times a day, and children – 20 drops. During the intake, you need to dilute the medicine with a small amount of liquid, except for boiling water, and milk. The German company Merkle produces Hilak-Forte, and the cost of one bottle of Hilak-Forte, with a volume of 100 ml, will range from 370 to 490 rubles.

Advantages and disadvantages

Hilak-Forte – practically without flaws. Although it is not a direct drug, it significantly improves and accelerates the treatment of dysbiosis, improves the well-being of patients, is well tolerated, and has no side effects. It enhances the immune response, accelerates the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms after treatment, normalizes the synthesis of B and K vitamins, and the presence of short-chain fatty acids in it provides a weakened intestinal microflora with easily digestible food. Therefore, this drug can be recommended to patients of all age groups with a variety of diseases, a decrease in the adaptive capabilities of the body, and even just for prophylaxis, for example, during long journeys and switching to a different type of diet.

Symptomatic remedies

Finally, one should not forget about symptomatic medications that reduce abdominal discomfort, especially in children, and allow for more comfortable treatment. In addition to normalizing the condition, drugs of these groups can relieve itching and other allergic reactions. But it must be remembered that if only the symptoms of helminthic invasion are eliminated in a small patient or in a weakened adult, and he began to feel better, this does not mean at all that the disease has been got rid of. The helminths remained to live inside and harm the body in the same way, only the signs of helminthic invasion began to bother the patient less. Therefore, symptomatic drugs should be prescribed only when deworming and a complex of hygienic measures are planned, the name cannot be changed for the main treatment. Most often, myotropic antispasmodics are used to relax the smooth muscles of the intestines, and antiallergic drugs.

Drotaverin (No-shpa)

Popularity rating: 4.9

No-shpa, or drotaverine, is the most famous antispasmodic. It is used for a large number of different diseases, ranging from gastritis and gallstone disease, and ending with renal colic, wherever there is a spasm of smooth muscles. No-shpa is presented in 40 mg tablets, in comparison with papaverine – they are stronger, act faster, and are used in adults and children, with the exception of those under the age of 6 years. One tablet a day is enough for children, and for adults – up to 3 times a day, but not more than 6 tablets. No-shpa is produced by the Hungarian pharmaceutical company Hinoin, and a pack of 24 tablets will cost no more than 120 rubles.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantage of No-shpy is that it relieves spasms well, reduces discomfort and pain, and improves well-being. The downside is that this is a symptomatic drug that does not affect the course of helminthic invasion in any way and pinworms simply do not feel it. Also, No-shpa has some contraindications, for example, hepatic and renal failure, the period of breastfeeding and low blood pressure.

Ceterizine (Cetrin)

Popularity rating: 4.8

Ceterizine (Cetrin)

Cetrin is also a drug, the main purpose of which is to eliminate itching and other allergy symptoms that sometimes bother children with helminthiasis. But besides helminthic invasions, the main area of application of Cetrin is allergic conjunctivitis and rhinitis, urticaria, angioedema and hay fever. It is necessary to use it for children over 6 years old, 5 mg 2 times a day, (half a tablet), and for adults, in a dosage twice as large, 10 mg, once a day. Tsetrin is produced by the Indian company Doctor Reddis, and a pack of 20 tablets of 10 mg will cost from 130 to 180 rubles.

Advantages and disadvantages

As in the previous case, it is highly undesirable to prescribe antiallergic drugs for helminthiasis for a long time, this is a one-time therapy when urticaria, severe itching, and other symptoms occur. Parents should understand that intense nighttime itching in the anus is not at all purely allergic in nature, but is associated with the laying of eggs by pinworms, and therefore the main way to treat this itching is to take anthelmintic drugs, as well as the rules of prevention and hygiene measures that must be strictly observed . What rules during treatment are we talking about?

What prevention rules must be followed during treatment?

The need to strictly observe the rules of personal hygiene and secondary prevention was repeatedly emphasized, otherwise drug treatment would be useless, since a child or an adult would constantly have contact with parasite eggs. How is it correct to be treated? These are simple and important steps:

  1. before starting treatment, it is necessary for both the child and the adult to cut their nails short;
  2. you need to try to instill in the baby the habit of washing his hands thoroughly before eating, in the mornings and evenings, and be sure to teach him to wash the space under the nails with a brush along with soap, or, in any case, teach him not to resist it;
  3. it is necessary to wean him to 'drag' all kinds of toys and objects, hands into mouth, and this is the most difficult thing. Special bitterness can be used to make fingers 'tasteless';
  4. before bedtime, the child needs to be washed;
  5. panties or diapers should have an elastic band not only on the belt, but also on the hips, so that eggs fall as little as possible on the linen and surrounding objects;
  6. during and after treatment, bed and underwear must be changed daily;
  7. sheets and panties must be ironed with a high-quality steam iron;
  8. in living rooms and premises, it is necessary to eliminate all 'dust collectors': carpets, covers for upholstered furniture, and make all objects accessible to wet cleaning with the use of disinfectants. Remember that pinworms coat their eggs with a special fat, like wax, and they stick to any surface;
  9. in order to guarantee the destruction of eggs, it is advisable to preheat bed and underwear, both adults and children, before washing (or after) in the oven at a temperature of 65 degrees for 40 minutes, and in winter to take out at night to the loggia, balcony or in a bag through the window , in a private house, just bury it in the snow;
  10. in sunny weather, you can simply hang the washed linen on the street before ironing. Pinworm eggs, like any helminths, are very afraid of dryness and ultraviolet radiation.
  11. it is forbidden for a child to sleep with adults, there must be a separate bed; he must also have his own towels;
