How to choose a sander
To begin with, consider a list of criteria that should be followed when choosing a grinder for use at home or in your own small workshop.
Professional or household?
Above, we have already hinted that the review will focus on affordable typewriters, which automatically implies household or, at most, semi-professional models. Here we will briefly explain why this is so.
A professional power tool in almost all technical characteristics is incomparably higher than any household one. Such models were originally designed for continuous continuous operation in several work shifts. Here, not only the endurance of the moving parts is important, but also the reliability of secondary components, blocks, parts. All this puts forward such high requirements for a professional power tool that even a model limited in functionality, by definition, cannot even be an average price.
That is why, if you do not plan to open a construction company, and you need a grinder from time to time, there is no point in buying a professional unit. It is too expensive and impractical. A good household grinder can easily cope with the needs of a small private workshop.
Angle grinders (grinders)
The most widespread, practically 'folk' form factor of grinders is the 'grinders' well known even to children, that is, angle grinders. By the way, many people mistakenly believe that the word 'angular' means the purpose for processing corners, while in fact they mean a design feature – the working shaft is at right angles to the plane of the engine.
It just so happened that machines of this type in the overwhelming majority of cases are bought and used for cutting, and not for grinding. Plus, it's too big a niche to consider on par with other form factors. That is why, within the framework of this rating, we will consider only those machines that are no longer used in any way, except for grinding, and we will consider 'grinders' as a separate topic.
In belt sanders, as you might guess, an abrasive tape glued into a ring is used as a working surface. Depending on the model, the width of such a tape can vary from 65 to 110 mm. The rotation of the belt is provided by two end rollers. Travel speed – from 150 to 400 meters per minute.
Most often, these machines are used for rough pretreatment of flat surfaces. They are widely used in interior decoration, when you need to quickly and effortlessly remove a thick layer of material or grind the putty areas. Also, this form factor can cope with the processing of parts of doors and windows during their manufacture. In rare cases, they are used at intermediate stages in the process of painting a car.
The high performance of tape machines has a downside – roughness of processing. They leave noticeable traces of processing – scuffs, scratches, depressions. Therefore, a different type of machine must be used for final finishing.
Machines of this type are also called surface grinders precisely because of the shape of the working surface and the nature of the processing. The main working part is a soft rectangular sole. When turned on, the sole begins to reciprocate with a small amplitude, but at a tremendous speed, due to which the effect is achieved.
Here there is a direct dependence of the surface treatment speed and its quality on the amplitude of the sole movements. The greater the amplitude, the higher the rate of material removal, but at the same time the quality decreases. Therefore, if it is highly desirable for you to perform preliminary and final sanding with the same machine, look for models that allow you to adjust the speed and / or amplitude. If you intend to process hard-to-reach places, you will need a delta sander with an iron-shaped sole.
Surface grinders can use different ways of attaching the abrasive sheet – using clamps or Velcro. Clips machines are often cheaper and generally more versatile due to the simplified selection and availability of consumables. As for the velcro, this mount is more convenient. Many models support both types of fastening, and in our rating we will consider several such examples.
Finally, eccentric machines are special grinders in which circular rotation is added to the reciprocating moment. This adds efficiency to the operation of the device and makes them almost indispensable when processing curved and profiled surfaces. It is these machines that are most often used for ultrafine polishing.
Eccentric machines differ in terms of the disc speed and vibration amplitude. The dependence of processing speed and quality on the amplitude is exactly the same as for surface grinders. Replaceable abrasive sheets are attached with a clip or the same 'Velcro'.
Whichever type of grinder you are looking for, you should definitely pay attention to the presence of a complete dust removal system. Most often, household machines are equipped with compact filter bags, dust collectors, but it is also desirable that the unit design provides for the possibility of connecting to an external vacuum cleaner. In no case should you neglect high-quality dust removal or, even more so, save on this issue, since the 'fog' that the grinder raises is most often destructively harmful to health.
If you intend to process surfaces made of plastic, an eccentric machine, or a vibration machine with a low speed of the platform, is best suited. The same machines are suitable for metal processing, only the grain size of the abrasive should be several times higher. For fine polishing, fiber or fan discs are used instead of an abrasive.

Best Belt Sanders
The first selection of devices in our rating is a grinder made in a tape form factor. Our experts have identified four models from different manufacturers in a wide market offer: the Japanese Makita and three German ones – Metabo, BOSCH and Hammer. It is worth recalling here that the globalization of production fully applies to power tools, so all three presented German machines are actually produced in China. But in this case, this is by no means a 'condemnation' to quality, since the development and quality control is still at a very high level.
Let's start with a model from the Japanese veteran of the Makita power tool market. Here we have a rare example of 'reverse globalization', where the headquarters is located in Asia and the production is in Europe. This particular model is produced at Makita's own factory in the UK. Last but not least, this had an impact on the rather impressive cost of the instrument.
In this collection, this is the most powerful and efficient machine. The motor power is 1.2 kW in terms of energy consumption. It operates only from a 220V network. At the same time, it is considered one of the quietest in its class: the sound power is not higher than 84 dB, according to the manufacturer, and the sound pressure is not higher than 97 dB.
Overall dimensions of the grinder – 353x164x211mm, net weight – 5.7 kg. Sanding belt size – 100×610 / 620mm. The working speed of the belt is about 500 meters per minute, which ensures prompt and not particularly laborious removal of the top layer of material. The speed is fixed. A labyrinth seal protects the bearing and motor from potentially harmful contamination. There is an additional handle on the 'nose' of the machine for a more secure grip and precise guidance.
To collect dust, this sander uses a fairly convenient dust collector that can be rotated in all directions 360 degrees. Connection of a vacuum cleaner is not provided.
The scope of delivery includes the grinder itself, graphite and cork plates, dust bag, one sanding belt.
- British assembly;
- quality of materials and workmanship;
- relatively quiet.
- pretty limited functionality for the price.
Metabo BAE 75
The rating continues with a grinding machine developed by the engineers of the German company Metabowerke GmbH, holder of the world famous Metabo brand. This model is much more functional than the previous example, and even slightly cheaper at a price.
The power (consumed) of the engine is almost the same as that of the above model – 1.01 kW, which provides decent performance. The size of the working belt is 75×533 mm, the grinding cavity is 85×150 mm. The net weight of the machine is 4.9 kg. The length of the standard cable is 4 meters.
At idle, the belt speed can vary from 240 to 450 meters per minute. The speed can be adjusted by simple manipulation with a special adjusting wheel. The belt can be changed quite easily and quickly, even without a special tool.
The power of the motor combined with the precise belt travel results in high quality sanding with minimal effort. The belt speed can be controlled by high-tech automation controlled by the Vario-Tacho-Constamatic full-wave electronics. At the same time, on different materials when changing the load, the speed remains unchanged.
For the most accurate guidance of the tool, an additional handle is provided in the design. The functionality also allows literally in a matter of minutes or even seconds to readjust the machine for stationary operation. In this case, the longitudinal emphasis 'comes into play', which takes over the function of ensuring the accuracy of guiding the workpiece.
To collect the removed material, you can use a standard antistatic dust bag or an external universal vacuum cleaner.
The delivery set of the device includes, in addition to the machine itself, an antistatic dust collector, a hex wrench, an additional handle, an adapter for connecting a vacuum cleaner, a platform for stationary installation, a longitudinal stop.
The official manufacturer's warranty for this model is 36 months.
- long cable;
- easy changeover for stationary use;
- replacement of the belt without special tools;
- speed regulation;
- three years warranty.
- there are complaints about a weak drive belt (can be easily replaced).
BOSCH PBS 75 AE
The third number in the ranking is a grinder developed by the German company BOSCH and Chinese-made on a contract basis. This model is already noticeably less powerful and even cheaper than the previous one.
The power consumption in this case is 0.75 kW, the machine is powered from the network. Working belt size – 75×533 mm. Net weight of the device – 3.5 kg. At idle speed, the tool develops a belt speed of up to 200 rpm.
The main advantage of this sander is the optimal combination of power and efficiency, multiplied by increased reliability and reliability. It handles large surface areas almost like the two more powerful and expensive models described above. Users especially appreciate the well-thought-out ergonomics – the machine is especially easy to use, despite the fact that it is less than a kilogram lighter in weight than older models. Reliability is added by the case of increased strength with aluminum parts.
Also, automation and electronics work for the best result. So, the sander automatically centers the sanding belt, keeping it in the desired working position all the time. The speed is electronically controlled depending on the load and the surface. It is easy to set the nominal speed – for this there is a special switch with a built-in adjusting wheel.
The scope of delivery includes the grinder itself, one copy of the K-80 sanding belt and a plastic case for storage and transportation. The manufacturing guarantee for the product is 24 months.
- case included;
- reliability and reliability;
- precise automatic tape centering and rotation frequency;
- there are complaints about the heavy weight, although this model is objectively lighter than the previous two.
Hammer LSM 800 B
Completing the selection of the rating of belt sanders is another model of German design with a Chinese, but solid and high-quality assembly.
In terms of weight, this model is similar to the previous one – 3.5 kg, and in terms of power consumption it is a little more demanding – 800 W. Powered by a network. A sanding belt is used with a length of 457 mm and a width of 75 mm. In work, it develops a belt speed of up to 290 meters per minute. Such parameters, according to the description from the manufacturer itself, are optimal for working with different materials – plywood, timber, chipboard, fiberboard for removing varnish, paint and other types of processing.
The electronics of the device allows automatic adjustment of the belt speed in the range from 120 m / min to a maximum of 290 m / min. A standard dust collector can be used to collect waste material, or the machine can be connected to an industrial vacuum cleaner.
Users note the high ergonomics of this model – a comfortable body, an additional handle for secure grip and guidance, keyless replacement of equipment with a single lever. For long-term continuous operation, you can use the release button of the start button. The manufacturer also emphasizes the small diameter of the driven drum and the hinged housing cover as great advantages to ease of use when processing hard-to-reach areas.
The scope of delivery includes one sanding belt, dust bag, two clamps and a support frame. The manufacturing guarantee for this grinder is 5 years.
- 5 years warranty;
- special convenience when processing hard-to-reach areas;
- general convenience;
- the most affordable price in the group.
- there were no obvious flaws or clear user complaints.
Best Vibration Sanders
The second group of devices in the ranking of the best grinders according to the version are vibration-type machines. Recall that they are used mainly for fine finishing and polishing of various surfaces. Our experts have brought to your attention six worthy models. As for the manufacturers, there are no surprises here – two models from BOSCH, two from Makita, one from Hammer and another from DeWALT, an American company with a deep history and a worldwide reputation.
Let's start traditionally with the most expensive model and immediately emphasize that this is the most powerful and productive tool in this collection. All the other five models in the group are much weaker in terms of power.
The machine is equipped with a motor with a power consumption of 600 watts. With this power, the device easily transmits to the working platform 12 thousand vibrations per minute after 6 thousand revolutions of the driving part of the drive. The amplitude is 5 mm. All this allows the machine to be used with high efficiency for primary surface treatment, removing a thick layer of material in one pass.
The grinder is easy to use due to its low weight – 3 kg, compactness – 283 mm in length, good ergonomics. For long-term continuous operation, you can fix the start switch with a special blocking button. The choice of options for attaching abrasive sheets – using clamps or Velcro, significantly adds to the comfort in work.
An important advantage of the model is easy penetration into hard-to-reach areas thanks to a rectangular pillow measuring 115×229 mm, which extends beyond the contours of the body. For exactly the same reason, it is easy to process the surface with it in the minimum proximity to an insurmountable obstacle – for example, for grinding the floor directly against the wall or vice versa.
To collect dust, you can use the supplied dust collector or connect the machine to an external vacuum cleaner through the outlet. It is important to remember that in this model, dust removal is carried out through the support frame, which means that you must not forget to monitor the strict coincidence of technological holes on the pad and sanding sheets.
In general, the 9046 model finds the most positive reaction from buyers who characterize it as reliable, durable and reliable. Even with intensive use, it does not require frequent maintenance. Thanks to the effective damping system, 'useless' vibration is reduced to almost zero, which positively affects the noise of the device and the overall comfort of working with it.
- power and performance;
- endurance and unpretentiousness in service;
- reliability and reliability;
- ease of use.
- according to user reviews, the volume of the dust collector is too small.
BOSCH GSS 280 AE
Now let's look at the first example of the two presented in this collection of rating of models of BOSCH vibratory grinders. The nomenclature contains the phrase 'Professional', but with all the advantages of the car, it is more of a decoration here than an objective reflection of the class. It is fair to point out that this series is manufactured in Switzerland with the highest quality control requirements.
In terms of power consumption, this machine is two times weaker than the previous one – 330 W. At the same time, at first glance, the platform vibration frequency may cause confusion. Here it is adjustable and can vary from 11 to 22 thousand vibrations per minute, which looks strange against the background of a twice more powerful model from Makita. But everything falls into place if you pay attention to the amplitude – in this model it is more than half as much as in the previous solution – 2.4 mm.
The physical and technical parameters of this grinding machine are as follows: net weight – 2.6 kg; sheet dimensions – 280x115mm; two options for fixing the sheet – Velcro or clips with the dimensions of replaceable plates 115x230mm and 115x280mm, respectively; there is an additional handle; universal design, convenient for left-handers; mains supply.
The functionality of the device includes the ability to adjust the vibration frequency, lock the start button for long-term continuous use, the ability to collect dust in a standard dust collector or discharge it into an external vacuum cleaner through an adapter (the adapter itself is not included in the delivery set).

- perceptible 'parasitic' vibration.
BOSCH GSS 23 AE
Another grinder from BOSCH in this selection of the rating does not compete with the Makita 9046, even indirectly, but for its class it is one of the best, and its cost does not cause any questions from buyers. This series is produced at the BOSCH plant in Malaysia.
The machine is much lighter than the previous model – 1.7 kg. Linear dimensions – 317x158mm. The power consumption of the device is 190 W. At idle, the rotation of the working drive can be varied from 7 to 12 rpm (adjustable), giving the platform a stroke rate of 14 to 24 vibrations per minute with an amplitude of 2 mm.
Dimensions of working parts: sanding plate – 92 mm wide and 182 mm long; sanding sheet with clamps – 93 mm wide and 230 mm long; Velcro sanding sheet – 93 mm wide and 185 mm long.
Independent testing and real-world customer experience speaks of acceptable noise levels, reliability, reliability and durability thanks to quality sealed ball bearings and a reliable sanding pad.
The scope of delivery includes the sander itself, a hole punch, a case for storage and carrying, two grinders, a dust collector-microfilter.
- reliability and reliability;
- low noise level;
- acceptable weight;
- high performance against a background of moderate power;

The rating is continued by the well-known American company DeWALT. In terms of characteristics, the model is comparable to the previous solution, in some way inferior or predominant, while being significantly cheaper. Manufactured in Mexico.
This sander is even lighter than the previous one at 1.3 kg and is 135 mm high. In operation, it consumes up to 230 W of electricity. The dimensions of the worksheet are 140 mm long and 115 mm wide. As in previous models, sheets with different types of fastening can be used here – with clips or with Velcro.
In terms of operating capabilities, this model is characterized by the maximum platform vibration frequency of 14 thousand vibrations per minute with an amplitude of 1.6 mm. For long-term continuous operation, the power button can be fixed. There is a compact dust collector, as well as the connection of an external vacuum cleaner. Mains powered.
The delivery set includes, in addition to the machine itself, a dust bag, an adapter for connecting a vacuum cleaner, and a perforating plate. The manufacturing guarantee is 36 months.
- light weight;
- low vibration;
- ease of use;
- long power cord.
- there is no speed control.
Now let's take a look at the second grinder of the Japanese brand Makita in this selection of ratings. Only now it will be a model without claims to be a professional class, but an ordinary solid 'workhorse' at an affordable price.
Power consumption of the device – 190 W, net weight – 1.6 kg. Develops a vibration frequency (adjustable) from 4 to 11 thousand per minute with the number of platform strokes, respectively, from 8 to 22 thousand with an amplitude of 2 mm. Grinding paper with dimensions 93×228 mm is used.
The sanding paper in this model is attached in one way – through a fairly convenient clamping system, which allows you to quickly, accurately and reliably change the equipment with minimal effort. Dust removal works through a sanding plate – the waste material is collected in a filter bag, or you can connect an external vacuum cleaner to the outlet. The start button can be fixed for long-term continuous operation of the machine.
A significant advantage of this model is its special ergonomics. A number of design solutions work for ease of use: general design of the device; rubber inserts on the body and handle; additional handle; large trigger type switch. According to user reviews, the machine is convenient to use even with one hand.
It should also be added that this grinder has a rather narrow specialization, namely, only finishing work. It is also not forbidden to use it for the initial stripping, but one should not expect particularly impressive performance in this case.
- ergonomics, convenient to use even with one hand;
- affordable price;
- productivity (at finishing works);
- very quiet operation;
- not marked.
Hammer PSM 300
Finally, we will consider the most budgetary model in this selection of the rating – the grinder of the German brand Hammer. The model was developed by engineers from Hammer Werkzeug GmbH, and the production itself is carried out in China.
The power of this grinder is surprisingly decent compared to several previous examples – 300 W, and the net weight is minimal – only 1.5 kg. The sanding sheets used are 230 mm long and 115 mm wide. Fastening of sheets by means of clamps is provided. Replacement is carried out in a keyless way.
The functionality of the device is as follows. The speed is adjustable and varies from 6 to 12 thousand rpm. The amplitude of the platform stroke is 2 mm. Waste material can be collected in a special dust-collecting bag or sent through the outlet to an external vacuum cleaner.

The best eccentric sander
The final selection of devices in the ranking of the best grinders according to the version is eccentric machines. Our experts have identified several of the most successful examples with the best reviews in a variety of popular models. The manufacturers are the same – BOSCH, Makita, DeWalt, Hammer.
BOSCH GEX 150 Turbo
Let's start with the most expensive grinder with a claim to professional grade from the legendary German brand BOSCH. Here we are dealing with an already rather rare case when BOSCH equipment is produced directly in Germany. However, it cannot be said that this affects the reliability in the most positive way – according to user reviews, it is sometimes necessary to repair the unit and repair is not cheap. However, the power and performance are exceptional here, and far outweigh the inconvenience of a problem.
Device dimensions – 310×147 mm, net weight – 2.4 kg. In operation, it consumes up to 600 W of electrical power. Develops the disk torque up to 6650 rpm and the platform stroke rate – up to 13.3 thousand vibrations per minute with an amplitude of 4.5 mm. Turbo Mode turns on the High Intensity mode, which allows for rough machining with a fivefold increase in efficiency.
This model uses 150 mm diameter sanding sheets with Velcro only. The functionality of the machine allows you to adjust the rotational speed of the disc, there is a separate engine brake (necessary for clean finishing, so that no disc marks remain) and a speed stabilization system. Ease of use is added by an additional handle. The removal of the removed material is carried out only through an external vacuum cleaner.
The delivery set includes the machine itself, a separate additional handle, one sanding sheet and an SW 5 hexagon socket wrench.
- powerful and productive;
- automatic stabilization of turns;

The third number in this selection of our rating is a grinder developed by the American company DeWALT. The model has earned a serious reputation among many users, and in terms of the totality of its characteristics, it received the same high marks from our experts.
This grinder is significantly less powerful than both discussed above – 400 watts. Weighs 2.7 kg. Linear dimensions – 129x200mm. The length of the power cable is 2.5 m. Develops the rotation of the disk at a frequency of 10 thousand rpm and the oscillation frequency of the platform up to 20 thousand per minute with a large amplitude – 6 mm, which can be reduced to 3 mm.
The parameters of the working disk are exactly the same as those of the two solutions discussed above – diameter 150 mm, Velcro fastening. The removed material in the process of work is collected in a separate paper dust collector with a frame. An additional handle provides a comfortable grip and precise guidance.
Additional functionalities: speed control, spindle fixation, automatic speed stabilization.
The delivery set, in addition to the unit itself, includes a sheet of grinding paper and one paper dust collector.
- variable vibration amplitude;
- precise automatic speed control;
- adjustable speed;
- compact dust collector included.

Now let's look at the second Japanese eccentric sander from Makita in this collection of ratings. In terms of the totality of characteristics, it is practically in no way inferior to the previous model, while being significantly cheaper.
Tool dimensions – 12.3×15.3×21.8 cm, net weight – 1.4 kg. In operation, it consumes up to 300 W of electric power, developing grinding disk circulation up to 12 thousand rpm with a platform stroke amplitude of 3 mm. The length of the cable for connecting to the mains is 2 meters. Disk rotation speed is adjustable. The start button can be locked for continuous operation.
The size of the sanding disc in this model is slightly smaller than that of any of the previous machines in the review – 125 mm in diameter. Fastened with Velcro. The produced dust is discharged into a special dust collector, which is included in the delivery set.
The expressive features of this model include: efficient dust removal system; rubberized switch, protected from dust ingress; double insulation for maximum safety; Convenient rubberized body for optimal control of the tool and minimizes the effects of vibration on the hands during operation.
According to the manufacturer, this model is sufficiently optimized in terms of power to cope equally efficiently with both rough, 'heavy' processing and fine finishing. However, users in the mass still note a lack of power during super-heavy work.
The scope of delivery includes a sheet of grinding paper, a dust collector, an additional handle and the machine itself.
- high-quality protection against dust entering the mechanism;
- ergonomics (rubberized body, additional handle, minimal vibration);
- separate dust collector.
- partly a discrepancy between actual performance and manufacturer's claims for extra-heavy work.
Now let's look at the second in this part of the rating machine brand DeWALT. It is only slightly less powerful than the previous model, but significantly cheaper, with almost nothing to lose in functionality.
This model is even lighter than the previous one – 1.28 kg, has a height of 140 mm. Consumes in operation 280 W of power from the mains. Develops from 8 to 12 thousand revolutions per minute, the vibration amplitude is 2.6 mm. In addition to manually adjusting the stroke rate, the machine is also able to maintain a constant speed in automatic mode. The power button can be locked. Soft start is supported.
The machine uses 125 mm velcro sanding discs. Equipped with an efficient dust extraction system. In this case, dust can be collected in a dust bag or through an adapter fed to an external vacuum cleaner.
Most users are extremely positive about the machine's capabilities in terms of working with various materials and performing various tasks – from rough removal of the top layer to fine grinding / polishing. It is characterized by a low level of 'parasitic' vibrations. The manufacturer also emphasizes the extremely simple replacement of carbon brushes.
