Review of the best according to the editorial board. On the selection criteria. This material is subjective and does not constitute advertising and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before buying, you need to consult with a specialist.

The American company Intel has existed since 1968. Now it is she who is the most famous manufacturer of processors for laptops, desktops and servers. Many people, when assembling their own computer, prefer to look for the processor Intel, even not paying attention to AMD products, which we will discuss in the next article. At a higher cost, the chipsets Intel are more reliable, offering very long MTBFs. Below will be considered the best processors Intel – buying any of the thirteen chipsets will definitely not disappoint.

How to choose a processor for your computer?

Not all readers are well versed in computers. Therefore, it will not be superfluous to talk about what components are inside the system unit (computer case):

  1. Power supply – supplies all components with electricity;
  2. Motherboard – all other components are connected to it, it is the connecting link;
  3. Processor – in fact, it is he who processes all commands from the user;
  4. Random access memory – is needed to contain data on open programs in it;
  5. Drives – SSDs and hard drives can be used in their capacity, they store all files, including the operating system itself;
  6. Optical drive – lately it is becoming less and less important, as nowadays not everyone needs to work with DVD-discs;
  7. Cooling system – it is needed so that the processor does not heat up to an extreme temperature at which the system automatically turns it off.

You should start assembling your computer from the motherboard. It will have a processor socket called a socket. Unfortunately, no motherboard is universal. This means that you will have to select the chipset for the socket used. Otherwise, you run the risk of facing the fact that the purchased processor either will not be inserted into the corresponding socket, or the BIOS will not be detected.

When choosing a processor, you need to focus on the amount for which you are willing to be generous. In the past, chipsets were relatively inexpensive. However, the situation has now changed. Even if you are assembling an office computer, production Intel will cost a fairly large amount – no less than 5,000 rubles. And if you are building a computer that serves for multimedia playback, then you need to look towards chipsets from the Intel Core series, preferably with at least four cores. Such chips cost from 10 to 15 thousand rubles. Well, the biggest expenses await you when assembling a gaming computer. Or, if necessary, edit videos on a regular basis. Top-end processors can easily cost over 70 thousand rubles! However, even their cost seems low against the background of what price tag server models can boast of. However, server chips will pay off anyway, especially if the server has been around for many years.

Best Desktop Processors Intel

Intel Core i9-7980XE

Rating: 4.9

Intel Core i9-7980XE

Just a few years ago, the maximum company Intel offered processors from the Core i7 series. However, now avid gamers and some professionals can buy chips belonging to the Core i9 line – they feature a large number of cores and the highest processing power. Such processors are supported exclusively by top-end motherboards that can provide the chip with a large amount of power. But is it worth buying, say, Intel Core i9-7980XE? Is it reasonable to give over 140 thousand rubles for it?

To install this processor you need socket LG A2066. This chipset consists of, scary to imagine, 18 cores! On the one hand, this is good. On the other hand, not every computer program is optimized for dividing tasks into such a number of threads. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the processor performs well in video editing in a professional application, as well as in solving other similar tasks. Gamers are better off looking at cheaper processors – they are unlikely to feel at least some FPS increase after buying such a monster.

This model is made using a 14-nanometer process technology. This allows you to hope for low power consumption even under maximum load. If you do not imply overclocking the processor, then you can get by with a simple air cooler. By the way, there is none in the kit. But many people buy chips from the Xtreme Edition series precisely for overclocking, they should think about creating a water cooling system.

Such a processor could not fail to boast of a record cache size – here it is 25 MB. By default, the cores of the chipset run at 2.6 GHz. With Turbo Boost, the clock rises to an impressive 4.2 GHz.

Advantages

  • Not so hot without overclocking;
  • A very large number of computing cores;
  • Suitable for gamers;
  • Large cache of the third level;
  • Supports 128GB DDR4 RAM;
  • High clock speed.

disadvantages

  • Not the best for maximum overclocking;
  • There is no integrated graphics;
  • Astronomical price tag.

Intel Core i9-7900X

Rating: 4.8

INTEL CORE I9-7900X.jpg

Another processor belonging to the Core i9 series. However, this representative of our rating has a smaller number of cores, due to which the price tag turned out to be more modest. This chip consists of 'only' ten computational cores! But even by default, they run at an impressive 3.3 GHz clock speed. If you use Turbo Boost, you can increase the frequency by 1 GHz.

Inside this chip are the traditional three levels of cache. The size of the L3 cache is 14 MB, which is still an almost exorbitant parameter. This processor is mounted in any motherboard, which includes socket LG A2066. The chip also supports almost any amount of DDR4 RAM – the manufacturer claims a maximum of 128 GB. The only limitation is the number of memory channels, which can be at most only four.

The processor Intel Core i9-7900X was created using the 14 nm process technology, like other top chipsets of this company released in 2017-2018. Heat dissipation under normal operating conditions will not exceed 140 W. It seems that for such a powerful chipset this is quite an adequate parameter. If you do not overclock, then you will be satisfied with a conventional air cooler with a relatively low turret. Water based cooling is only needed in case of serious overclocking.

Advantages

  • A large number of computing cores;
  • Will suit most gamers;
  • Large amount of RAM is supported;
  • A decent amount of cache is built in;
  • Very high clock speed.

disadvantages

  • High price;
  • Problematic case removal;
  • There is no built-in graphics accelerator.

Intel Core i7-6950X

Rating: 4.8

INTEL CORE I7-6950X.jpg

This is a more familiar processor, which, however, is also made using a 14-nanometer process technology. It also has a built-in memory controller. Moreover, the chip also received 10 cores. The difference lies in the fact that the chipset is designed for installation in the socket LG A2011-3. Do I need to say that it has existed for a longer time? Therefore, finding a motherboard equipped with it is much easier, and it is unlikely that it will cost crazy money. At the same time, the chip supports all the same 128 GB of DDR4 RAM. However, this is relevant not for gamers (a smaller volume is enough for them), but for those who are going to use this processor in a server.

The cores built in here run at 3000 MHz. Impressive. They perform well in a video editor or some kind of 'Photoshop'. In games, this power is felt less. There is nothing to be done, a rare game is sharpened for 10 computational threads. As expected, the chip has a three-level cache. In this case, the size of the L3 cache reaches 25 MB.

This representative of our rating is considered a game one. Moreover, its heat dissipation most often does not exceed 140 W. Nevertheless, even this figure is quite impressive. It is not for nothing that the chip is delivered in proud isolation – the cooling system will have to be purchased separately. By the way, if you decide to disperse this miracle, then you will need dropsy.

This processor is still quite expensive. But it is his purchase that looks most appropriate if you are assembling a computer for solving difficult tasks. Rest assured, the chipset will work for a very long time – it is unlikely that it will cease to be relevant even after seven to eight years.

Advantages

  • Large cache size;
  • High clock speed;
  • Many computing cores;
  • A huge amount of RAM is supported.

disadvantages

  • High price;
  • No integrated graphics core;
  • If there is a cooler, it is of poor quality.

Intel Core i7-7820X

Rating: 4.8

INTEL CORE I7-7820X.jpg

You can't argue with the laws of physics. If a processor consists of a large number of computing cores, then they are unlikely to be able to operate at a high clock frequency. This is why many consumers are looking for a quad or eight core chipset. Buying such a processor, you can count on very high performance even in those applications that are not designed for loading a large number of cores. In particular, Intel Core i7-7820X runs at 3600 MHz by default. But you can also overclock it!

The chip is installed in socket LG A2066. It seems that now you can find even a fairly inexpensive motherboard with such a connector without any problems, not to mention gaming options. If you use a good cooling system and the Turbo Boost function, then the frequency rises to 4.3 GHz. It should be noted that the processor is shipped naked to the customer. This means that the cooler will have to be purchased additionally anyway. A simple turret with a copper base will be fine, since the typical heat dissipation of this processor does not exceed 140 W. Problems can only arise with extreme overclocking – in this case, water cooling is required.

The chip does not have a very large cache. Although, the 11 MB L3 cache cannot be called the minimum. As for the RAM, the maximum processor recognizes 128 GB. In a word, in this regard, the product does not differ from the examples discussed above, while Intel Core i7-7820X is sold at a significantly lower price. In conclusion, we note that the chip was created using a 14-nanometer process technology – while this is the maximum that factories are capable of Intel.

It is now one of the most popular processors Intel. We recommend buying it to every person who needs to solve complex problems. This chip helps both in writing programs and in video editing, it feels great in gaming machines.

Advantages

  • A large number of cores;
  • Very high clock speed;
  • Large amount of RAM is supported;
  • Decent, albeit not a record, cache size;
  • Low power consumption in default operation.

disadvantages

  • For serious overclocking, you will need to cut the cover;
  • Some people lack integrated graphics;
  • The price tag will not suit everyone.

Intel Core i7-5960X

Rating: 4.7

INTEL CORE I7-5960X.png

Another processor in our rating, on the box with which there is an inscription Extreme Edition. This means that the chip can be overclocked. This process does not promise any particular problems, especially if you stock up on water cooling. The difference from the models discussed above lies in the old design of the cores – they were created using the 22 nm process technology. Therefore, the nuclei turned out to be quite large. This negatively affects power consumption under load. Although it must be admitted that the manufacturer managed to keep the heat dissipation at 140 W. But even with this parameter, the need to use a good cooling system is declared. If the samples discussed above are able to function even if their temperature reaches 90 ° C, then you cannot say the same about Intel Core i7-5960X – failures can begin already at 70 ° C.

Processor installation requires socket LG A2011-3. There are eight cores inside this chip. Their clock speed reaches 3000 MHz. The product is also capable of boasting a multiplication factor of 30. Please note that there is no integrated graphics core. This does not seem to be a problem, since buyers of such a processor also have a powerful video card.

Like other modern chipsets, the Intel Core i7-5960X has a three-level cache. At the same time, the size of the L3 cache reaches an impressive 20 MB. The processor also includes a memory controller with a bandwidth of 68 GB / s.

The chip is available in several delivery options. We recommend buying the so-called 'carcass'. You don't need a complete cooler. The fact is that Intel puts a simple cooler into the box, which smells disgusting at first, and its fan speed may not be enough under certain conditions.

Still, we must admit that this processor has an excessively high price tag. For 75 thousand rubles, you can buy a new generation chip. It is recommended to purchase this processor only if your motherboard does not support new models made using the 14nm process technology, and you do not intend to change it.

Advantages

  • Potential for overclocking
  • High clock speed;
  • Large cache size;
  • A large number of cores;
  • High-bandwidth memory controller.

disadvantages

  • Serious air cooling required;
  • No built-in graphics
  • High price.

Intel Core i7-9700K

Rating: 4.7

INTEL CORE I7-9700K.jpg

Of course, our rating cannot only consist of expensive processors. Agree, for 70 thousand rubles you want to buy a full-fledged computer, not just a chipset. This is why one of the most popular processors right now is the Intel Core i7-9700K. For only 31-35 thousand rubles, it offers quite decent computing power. Such a chipset is often bought by those people who prefer to use their computer for games. Rest assured, a more expensive processor will provide a small FPS boost. We can safely say that the models discussed above are intended more for professionals, while Intel Core i7-9700K is an instance for a regular mass consumer.

This processor is eight-core. To install it requires socket LG A1151 v2. It's nice that the 12 nm process technology was used to make the cores. This means that the product has very low power consumption. At the same time, the manufacturer tried to squeeze the maximum possible out of the available technology. As a result, even in the default operating mode, the core clock speed can reach 3600 MHz. But the maximum potential is revealed in Turbo Boost mode. Eight threads allow you to reach a clock speed of 4900 MHz. The product is also capable of boasting a third-level cache, the volume of which is 12 MB.

As expected, the chip has an integrated memory controller. It is by its structure that we can say that the company Intel still saved. The point is that the bandwidth is only 41.6 GB / s. The maximum chip supports 64 GB of DDR4 RAM. The limitation also lies in the fact that the maximum processor supports two memory channels.

Unlike the models discussed above, the Intel Core i7-9700K has an integrated graphics core. In its capacity, UHD 630 is used here, operating at a clock frequency of 1200 MHz. The product also has a low heat dissipation – only 95 watts. Taking into account the possibility of operation at a temperature of 100 ° C, we can safely say that a particularly powerful cooler is not required for the chip. However, if you are going to overclock such a processor, then water cooling still does not hurt. But why overclock, if by default the chip is capable of boasting high frequencies?

Advantages

  • Eight cores;
  • Low heat dissipation when using frequencies up to 3.2 GHz;
  • Very high clock speed;
  • There is an integrated graphics core;
  • A decent amount of L3 cache, albeit not a record one.

disadvantages

  • Traditionally for Intel solderless system;
  • Huge voltage under maximum load;
  • Raising frequencies greatly increases heat dissipation;
  • The price will not suit everyone.

Intel Core i7-5930K

Rating: 4.7

INTEL CORE I7-5930K.jpg

Even cheaper processor. But, of course, this is not the most accessible representative of our rating. In Russian stores, this chip is sold for 18-20 thousand rubles. It began to roll off the assembly line in 2014. Therefore, it should not be surprising that the 22 nm process technology was used for manufacturing. The chip consists of six computational cores. This is not the maximum number, but a few years ago the standard for Intel was four cores – so there is a certain step forward in the Core i7-5930K.

This chip operates at a clock frequency of 3.5 GHz. This is a very large figure. It is quite enough for many modern games and professional programs. It should be noted that the processor requires socket LG A2011-3, and there are more and more motherboards equipped with it. One cannot fail to note the good bandwidth of the built-in memory controller – it is 68 GB / s. As for the cache size of the third level, it can be called very good – it reaches 15 MB.

Unfortunately, this processor also has disadvantages. Well, how could you do without them in such an inexpensive chipset? The heat dissipation, which in most operating modes reaches 140 watts, is the most grievous. At the same time, the chip is able to operate at a maximum temperature of 67 ° C. Therefore, the user needs a good cooler. Do I need to say that not everyone wants to pay about 1/5 of the cost of this processor for a cooling system? However, experts will say that people assembling a gaming computer should get used to it. In order not to risk your processor, a cooler is always selected with a certain margin. Consequently, cheap cooling systems are bought only for building an office PC. And the Core i7-5930K is definitely not for such a computer.

Advantages

  • High clock speed;
  • A sufficiently large number of cores;
  • A decent amount of 'digestible' memory;
  • Sufficiently large cache size;
  • The price is not outrageously high;
  • There is an integrated graphics core.

disadvantages

  • High heat dissipation.

Intel Core i5-8400

Rating: 4.6

INTEL CORE I5-8400.jpg

Initially, it seemed that only chips belonging to the Core i7 and Core i9 lines would be produced according to the 14 nm process technology. However, Intel still decided to please those people who are not ready to pay their monthly salary (or even two) for the processor. In this regard, the Intel Core i5-8400 was born. They ask for 13 thousand rubles for a box with this chip. By modern standards, this is the amount to which the word 'everything' can be attributed. Video cards are much more expensive. But what can I say, nowadays even data storage devices can have a higher price tag!

Well, what exactly do we get for that kind of money? Typically, the Core i5 series includes quad-core chips. But this processor is the most powerful member of the family, it is capable of boasting six processing cores! The clock frequency not exceeding 2800 MHz speaks about belonging to the mid-budget line. Fortunately, if you have a good cooling system at your disposal, then you can use the Turbo Boost function – in this case, the frequency will increase to 4000 MHz.

To mount the processor, you need the popular socket LG A1151 v2. Interestingly, the chip, manufactured using a 14-nanometer process technology, received an integrated graphics core HD Graphics 630, operating at a frequency of 1050 MHz. Of course, gamers won't be interested in this – they have a video card. But when assembling an office PC, the built-in graphics will be very useful. The chipset also includes three levels of cache. The cache of the third level is 9 MB.

The processor has an integrated memory controller with a bandwidth of 41.6 GB / s. The maximum product supports DDR4-2666 RAM, and its volume should not exceed 64 GB. Another indication of the mid-budget segment is the fact that the chip only supports two memory channels.

The processor differs from more expensive analogs by lower heat dissipation. When using base frequencies, it does not exceed 65 W, while the chip can work stably even when heated to a temperature of 100 ° C. It turns out that the product does not require any kind of advanced cooling system. The exceptions are the above-mentioned cases of increasing the clock frequency – then the heat dissipation increases significantly.

Advantages

  • Extremely high clock speed;
  • A sufficiently large number of cores;
  • There is an integrated graphics core;
  • There is a good memory controller;
  • Low heat dissipation;
  • Will suit even a gamer;
  • Low cost.

disadvantages

  • The box cooler is no good;
  • Motherboards with the correct socket are expensive.

Intel Core i5-7600K

Rating: 4.5

INTEL CORE I5-7600K.jpg

Slightly more expensive representative of our rating. At the same time, it consists of only four cores, created according to the same 14-nanometer process technology. Why is the price tag raised? Firstly, the product requires the first version A1151 socket LG, and motherboards equipped with it have a reasonable cost. Secondly, the cores of this chip operate at a clock frequency of 3800 MHz. Default! This means that even at this frequency, the heat release will not exceed the figure declared by the manufacturer – 91 W. Unfortunately, the Turbo Boost function has almost no effect on the performance of the chipset. When activated, the frequency rises only to 4.2 GHz – the difference, as you noticed, is small.

As expected, the processor has a tiered cache. But the chip is far enough from the records. To be as precise as possible, the L3 cache is only 6144 KB. Of course, a few years ago this figure seemed outrageous. But now we understand that more expensive chips have at least twice as much cache.

Otherwise, this is a typical mid-budget processor. Traditionally, for such products released by forces Intel, the Core i5-7600K received an integrated graphics core. In its capacity, HD Graphics 630 is used here – a core operating at a frequency of 1150 MHz. Of course, the processor also has an integrated memory controller. The maximum chip recognizes 64 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM. The chip works stably even if its temperature gets close to 100 ° C. However, this does not mean that you should save on cooling it. The complete cooler should be thrown away altogether – it has a painfully low workmanship, and it practically cannot cope with its task.

Advantages

  • Very high clock speed;
  • Not very high heat dissipation;
  • A decent amount of RAM is supported;
  • There is an integrated graphics core.

disadvantages

  • Consists of only four cores;
  • The price cannot be called very low;
  • Not suitable for overclocking.

Intel Core i3-8100

Rating: 4.3

INTEL CORE I3-8100.png

At least one processor belonging to the Intel Core i3 series should have been included in our rating. As you know, this is a budget line, which includes chips intended mainly for use in office computers. However, the Intel Core i3-8100 can also be placed in a home PC that a primary student intends to use. The problem is that the processor requires socket LG A1151 v2. Needless to say, motherboards equipped with it are very expensive?

You can buy the chip itself for only 10 thousand rubles. Of course, for this money, you will only get a processor. But we do not recommend looking for a kit with a cooler. It is better to select the cooling system separately. It should be noted that you don't need any giant 'tower'. The fact is that the product is made using a 14-nanometer process technology. This means that the chip will not get very hot. However, the manufacturer assures that his creation will work stably even at a temperature of 100 ° C. In general, the heat dissipation is only 65 W – this is a much more modest figure than the one that six- and eight-core solutions can boast of.

Office computer builders should be delighted that this chip has an integrated graphics core. It operates at 1200 MHz, which can be considered an adequate parameter. As for the four computing cores, they operate at a clock frequency of 3600 MHz. It seems that this will be enough even for professional applications. However, there are certain limitations here. First, the processor uses only four threads. Second, the product only supports two memory channels. Well, the bandwidth is also small (by modern standards) – it is 37.5 GB / s. In a word, after reading the characteristics, you immediately realize that this is a very inexpensive processor. By the way, the volume of the third-level cache does not exceed 6 MB – this is not at all surprising either.

Advantages

  • Affordable price tag;
  • Very low heat dissipation;
  • Supports 64 GB of RAM;
  • High clock speed;
  • There is an integrated graphics core.

disadvantages

  • Motherboards with a matching socket are expensive;
  • The box cooler makes a lot of noise;
  • Not the widest memory controller bandwidth.

Best CPUs Intel for Server

Intel Xeon Gold 6154

Rating: 4.9

INTEL XEON GOLD 6154.jpg

Most advanced chip ever created Intel. This is ideal for building a server. However, it is also the most expensive – in Russian stores they ask for more than 300 thousand rubles for a processor!

The chip belongs to the latest generation, so it was created using the 14 nm process technology. He also received a huge number of cores, namely – 18 pieces. They can operate at 3 GHz. It seems that this is quite enough even for the server not only to contain many sites, but also to solve very complex problems.

As befits a modern processor, the Intel Xeon Gold 6154 has an integrated memory controller. Maximum DDR4-2666 'RAM' can be installed in a server with such a chipset. It's nice that the processor got a three-level cache, the total amount of which reaches 43 MB. Speaking specifically about the L3 cache, its size is 25 MB.

Server processors are known to be very 'hot'. At the same time, the maximum this model is capable of functioning at a temperature of 82 ° C. It is quite difficult to achieve it, because the heat dissipation of the chip can easily reach 200 W. Therefore, you need to think seriously about the cooling system, otherwise you risk, if you do not burn the server, then face its regular shutdowns. It remains to add that to install the chip, you need a socket LG A3647.

Advantages

  • A huge number of cores;
  • The processor was created using the 14 nm process technology;
  • Supports DDR4-2666 RAM;
  • Very large cache size;
  • Implemented support for the technology Intel vPro;
  • Sufficiently high clock frequency.

disadvantages

  • Astronomical price tag;
  • Incredibly high heat dissipation.

Intel Xeon W-2195

Rating: 4.8

INTEL XEON W-2195.jpg

This processor has a more familiar appearance. This is due to the fact that an ordinary socket LG A2066 is used to mount it. Therefore, the chipset has a standard square shape. At the same time, 18 cores fit inside it! This was achieved, among other things, through the use of a 14-nanometer process technology.

For this model, they ask about 220 thousand rubles. From the reduced price tag, you can guess that certain restrictions await the user. This is most noticeable in the clock frequency, which is only 2300 MHz here. There is also a very low multiplication factor – it is equal to 23.

We can only be glad that the manufacturer did not save on the memory controller and cache. If we talk about the first, it supports DDR4-2666 memory, while four channels are supported. The maximum amount of memory that can be installed in the server is 512 GB. It's even hard to imagine how many sites can be contained on such a server! As for the bandwidth, its width reaches 85.3 GB / s.

This 18-core processor has the familiar tiered cache. In this case, the volume of the third-level cache is 25 MB. Well, the reduced clock frequency has a positive effect on heat dissipation. It is reduced here to 140 watts. However, the chip is capable of operating at a maximum of 66 ° C. Therefore, the buyer of such a processor still needs a good cooling system. I am glad that its noise does not play a special role, because we are talking about the server.

Advantages

  • A huge number of computing cores;
  • Large cache size;
  • A popular socket is used;
  • High-frequency RAM supported;
  • Support for Intel vPro has been implemented.

disadvantages

  • High heat dissipation;
  • The cost is far from the lowest.

Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4

Rating: 4.5

INTEL XEON E5-2680 V4.jpg

This must be one of the most affordable CPUs for server builders. It should also be noted that its installation requires a very popular socket LG A2011-3. Needless to say, even ordinary motherboards designed for installation in an ordinary desktop PC have them?

This chip performs calculations using 14 cores. All of them are created using a 14-nanometer process technology. The clock speed can reach 2400 MHz, which is an acceptable value for most servers. Well, the heat dissipation is generally pleasing – in many operating scenarios it does not exceed 120 W. In this case, the product remains operational until the moment when it is heated to 86 ° C. In a word, it is unlikely that the choice and purchase of a cooling system will cause a headache for the server owner.

This processor has a L3 cache of 35840 KB. It is possible that this is a record figure! Also, one cannot fail to note the support of DDR4-2400 RAM. The system bus bandwidth reaches 76.8 GB / s – this figure indicates that this chip is primarily intended specifically for installation in a server.

Perhaps the processor is definitely worth the 125 thousand rubles that are asked for it. It is not easy now, this is the most popular chip among those that are sharpened for work in the server. Moreover, some people buy it for their desktop! The fact is that this chip is slightly cheaper than many solutions from the Core i7 series with similar characteristics. But we must not forget that there is no sensible support for overclocking, and the clock frequency is not particularly high.

Advantages

  • A very large number of cores;
  • Designed for popular socket;
  • Supports modern high-frequency RAM;
  • The price cannot be called prohibitive;
  • Supported technology Intel vPro.

disadvantages

  • Not very high clock speed.

Conclusion

This is a list of the best computer chipsets created by the forces of an American company Intel. Above, we examined processors in different price segments. This allows you to select a chip based on the amount you are willing to spend. We also considered processors intended for use in servers. Such chips are distinguished by a long service life, almost complete absence of errors and support for a huge amount of RAM.
