  • the subwoofer is faintly felt.

Acer Predator 17X (GX-792)

Rating: 4.8

Acer Predator 17X (GX-792)

The second number in the Predator gaming laptop rating group Acer is the 17X series (GX-792). It includes various configuration options, which we will consider as necessary.

The dimensions of the laptop case are 423×321.5×45 mm, the net weight is 4.55 kg. Initially, as soon as the series was released, it was easy to choose from two color options: black with red artifacts and vice versa – red with black elements. Now the black version is much more affordable. The parameters of the screen and the matrix completely coincide with the previous model, see above.

Only one processor option is offered – a Core i7 on four Kaby Lake cores with a frequency of 2.9 GHz. Similarly, with the Helios 500, there are two options for equipping with RAM – 16 or 32 GB DDR4 with a frequency of 2.4 GHz bus. Physically, four slots are allocated for memory and, if desired, its volume can be expanded up to 64 GB.

  • performance;
  • powerful and capacious video card;
  • pleasant keyboard backlighting;
  • discreet but 'mesmerizing' design;
  • 4K resolution as an option;
  • build quality.

disadvantages

  • 'prehistoric' B IOS.

Acer Predator Triton 700 (PT715-51)

Rating: 4.7

Acer Predator Triton 700 (PT715-51)

The third number in our rating is the Triton 700 laptop. The model is interesting first of all because the developers did not initially consider equipping the laptop with a mechanical HDD, but only with a high-speed solid-state SSD. But first things first.

Laptop dimensions – 393x266x18.9 mm, net weight – 2.4 kg. Externally, in terms of design and various artifacts like keyboard backlighting, the laptop is strikingly similar to the above-described Helios 500, but still it is a completely different model, and a very limited number of modifications is expected.

Unlike the two previous models, only one version of the IPS matrix is offered here – FullHD 1920×1080. The screen size is also closer to conventional 'mainstream' laptops – 15.6 inches, although there is a significant percentage of buyers who are even more suited to this due to the impact on the compactness of the device as a whole.

There is no choice of processors either – only Core i7 on 4 Kaby Lake-H cores with a frequency of 2800 MHz. Light variations are permissible with RAM – there are modifications with 16 or 32 GB DDR4 2400 MHz on board. You can expand it up to 64 GB as an upgrade, but remember that there are only two slots for memory strips. Get really cool graphics with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or 1080 with fast 6GB or 8GB GDDR5 memory to choose from.

Now about what we mentioned at the very beginning of the description of the model. The standard configuration of the Triton 700 implies the installation of only a 512 or 1024 GB solid-state SSD, in the maximum configuration – two SSDs of the required volume. No optical drive is provided.

In terms of communication, the Triton 700 has the following capabilities: over-the-air communication – Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth; wired connections – Hi-Speed Gigabit NIC, one USB 2.0, three USB 3.0 Type A, HDMI, DisplayPort, one Thunderbolt 3, separate microphone in and headphone out.

The capacity of the 3-cell lithium polymer battery is 4670 mAh. This, according to the manufacturer, should be enough for 5 hours of play.

Advantages

  • powerful processor;
  • only high-speed SSDs included;
  • powerful battery;
  • compact, like for gaming.

disadvantages

  • autonomy, according to user reviews, is significantly lower than stated.

Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH315-51)

Rating: 4.7

Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH315-51)

The penultimate example of a large Predator gaming laptop in our ranking is the Helios 300. This suggests that this is a 'stripped down' version of the aforementioned Helios 500, and in many ways this is true.

Differences in the direction of weakening the characteristics begin already from the screen. Its size is 15.6 inches versus 17-inch Helios 500. Plus, 4K-matrix is not even considered as an option – only IPS FullHD 1920×1080. On the other hand, this, as expected, influenced the dimensions of the laptop – 390x266x26.8 mm and quite dramatically on its weight – Helios 300 is almost twice as light – 2.7 kg.

The choice of processor is offered in two versions – Intel Core i5 or i7 on four Coffee Lake cores with frequencies of 2.2 or 2.3 GHz with a huge cache – the second level is 1.5 MB and the third is 9 MB. The standard equipment is 8 or 16 GB DDR 2133 MHz, you can expand up to 32 GB in two slots. Graphics card – NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, 1050 Ti or 1060 with up to 16 GB GDDR5 memory.

With hard drives, the situation is the most flexible – you can choose the “minimum” from a mechanical disk up to 2 TB in volume or a pair of HDD and non-mechanical, which is much preferable for gaming tasks. DVD not installed. External memory SD cards are supported.

The communication capabilities of the Helios 300 are as follows: 'air' – Wi-Fi 802.11a and Bluetooth generation 4.1; wired connections – high-speed gigabit network card, two slots for USB 2.0, under one slot for USB 3.0 Type A and USB 3.1 Type-C, HDMI, combined input / output for microphone / headphones. There is a lock slot.

The laptop battery is made using lithium-ion technology, consists of 4 cells with a total resource of 3320 mAh.

Advantages

  • performance;
  • powerful processor with large cache;
  • cooling quality;
  • very lightweight for gaming.

disadvantages

  • no distinct flaws were found.

Acer Predator 17 (G9-793)

Rating: 4.7

Acer Predator 17 (G9-793)

The last laptop in the Predator line from Acer in our ranking is the Predator 17. It may seem that this is almost an analogue of the above described Predator 17X, and these suspicions are not unfounded. The models are indeed very similar even in appearance, but there are important differences.

Unlike the previous two models, this series again brings us back to the big screens. The diagonal is 17.3 inches, and the dimensions, respectively, are larger – 423×321.5×39.7 mm, net weight – 4.2 kg. The body is made of an extremely pleasant to the touch plastic with a soft-touch top layer. The keyboard features zoned RGB lighting.

Compared to the Predator 17X, there is a significant limitation here – the matrix is provided only in one version – IPS with a resolution of 1920×1080, that is, 4K is not even considered an option.

With processors, the situation is already more interesting – you can choose from Core i5 or i7 from Intel. The RAM in the standard factory configuration is expectedly offered in 16 or 32 GB DDR 2133 MHz variants. Expansion in the future is possible up to 64 GB, and it is quite convenient due to the presence of four slots. For high-quality graphics, there is a choice of GeForce GTX 1060 or 1070 from NVIDIA with 6 or 8 GB.

The laptop can be equipped with hard drives almost arbitrarily, including a pair of SSD and mechanical media with a total capacity of 4 TB. An unexpected move by the manufacturer is the presence of a DVD-RW drive in this model. But this is a modular device, so if there is no need for it, it can be easily replaced, say, with an additional fan.

The following communications are provided: wireless Wi-Fi 802.11a and Bluetooth 4.1; wired – a network gigabit card, USB 3.0 Type A in the amount of 4 pieces, HDMI, DisplayPort, one Thunderbolt 3, separate input and output for microphone and headphones.

Predator 17 is notable, according to user reviews, with very good sound, built on the Realtek ALC255 platform – four speakers and a subwoofer are built-in.

The rechargeable battery is a lithium-ion type with a capacity of 6000 mAh, nominally (according to the manufacturer's data) should provide a three-hour autonomy.

Advantages

  • large screen with high quality matrix;
  • high upgradeability in terms of RAM;
  • RGB backlit keyboard with four color zones;
  • large keys with a distinct stroke;
  • high quality sound;
  • decent autonomy;
  • expressive appearance in general.

disadvantages

  • no pronounced shortcomings were noted.

Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-51)

Rating: 4.6

Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-51)

And the Nitro 5 model completes the rating of gaming laptops from Acer. Against the background of relatively modest technical characteristics, this machine has one important advantage – being a full-fledged gaming laptop, the price of the model is dramatically lower than absolutely everyone in the group and is comparable to conventional mass solutions.

Due to the budget, the 'exterior' of the laptop did not suffer in any way – the case design is quite expressive, and the keyboard backlight sparkles with a predatory reddish tint no worse than the older models.

Laptop dimensions – 390x266x26.75 mm, net weight – 2.7 kg. The diagonal of the screen is 15.6 inches with an IPS FullHD 1920×1080 matrix. You can choose a modification with a processor Intel Core i5 or i7 on 4 Kaby Lake-H cores with a frequency of 2.5 or 2.8 GHz. DDR4 is offered in factory variants of 4, 6 or 12 GB, and the technology upgrade limit is 32 GB. An NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti card can be used to provide graphics.

The most common configuration is equipped with a single mechanical HDD with a capacity of 1 or 2 TB, but there are modifications with an additional 128 GB SSD. Experts strongly recommend the tandem option, since the standard HDD is slow, with a spindle rotation of 5400 rpm, and many users complain about this. There is no optical drive. External SD memory cards are supported.

In terms of communications, the situation with Nitro 5 is as follows: the 'air' connection is quite predictable – Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth version 4.0; wired connections – two USB 2.0 sockets, one USB 3.0 Type A and one USB 3.1 Type-C, HDMI, combined input / output for microphone / headphones.

Advantages

  • good optimization of electronics in terms of performance;
  • high quality sound;
  • picture quality;
  • the most affordable price in the group.

disadvantages

  • slow factory HDD.

Best Ultrabooks Acer

In a separate category, we have allocated two models, which in their form factor fall under the definition of an 'ultrabook'. These are considered to be super-light and ultra-thin laptops. Our experts ranked two models SWIFT 7 and SWIFT 5.

Acer SWIFT 7

Rating: 4.9

The dimensions of the laptop case are 324.6×229.6×10 mm, the net weight is 1.13 kg. The only choice is the color of the case – black or gold. The 13.3-inch screen houses an IPS matrix with 1920×1080 (FullHD) detail. The surface of the screen is glossy.

Acer SPIN 7

Rating: 4.9

Acer SPIN 7

A noticeable advantage of this model is a relatively large glossy screen of 14 inches, and this is precisely in the context of the form factor. Because when you disconnect the parts, you get a huge tablet, which is almost unrealistic to buy 'in pure form'.

The screen itself contains a high-quality IPS-type matrix with FullHD 1920×1080 detail. The surface is glossy, the screen is touch. The overall dimensions of the folded laptop are 324.6×229.6×11 mm, the net weight is 1.6 kg.

The existing modifications imply the ability to choose from two processor options – Intel Core i5 or i7 with a special specification – 7Y54 for i5 and 7Y75 for i7. The frequency of the Kaby Lake cores is 1.2 or 1.3 GHz. LPDDR3 RAM – 8 GB in volume. Graphics Card – Built-in Intel HD Graphics 615. Hard Drive – 256GB or 512GB solid state SSD. There is no optical drive.

Of the wireless modules in SPIN 7, there is only 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Of the wired connections, only USB 3.1 Type-C and headset in / out. The battery is a four-cell lithium-polymer battery with a total capacity of 2770 mAh.

Advantages

  • relatively large screen;
  • quiet work;
  • strong, shockproof;

disadvantages

  • very few interfaces.
