The best 17-inch gaming laptops
The difference between gaming laptops and office laptops lies not only in the design of the case and the presence of keyboard backlighting. They have more efficient system components, are equipped with more RAM and a number of other functions for a comfortable game. They also easily perform all work functions, but they have one drawback: most often, the cost of gaming laptops is several times higher than the price of standard office models.
DELL G7 17 7790
The first line of the rating goes to the DELL G7 17 7790 laptop. It is based on the next Core i7 chip of the 9750U series with 6 Coffee Lake cores with a frequency of 2.6 GHz. Responsible for graphics processing is the GeForce RTX 2070 card from Nvidia with 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. And only in terms of RAM parameters, there is a strong underestimation relative to the reference, but too expensive ASUS ROG: only 16 GB of DDR4 memory at 2666 MHz is installed on board with the possibility of 2 times expansion.
Optional additions to the DELL G7 17 7790 are a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint scanner for signature confirmation of login. The amount of permanent memory is 1128 GB, where 128 is for an SSD-drive, and 1000 for a standard HDD with a speed of 5400 rpm. It is noteworthy that the total weight of the model hardly exceeds 3 kilograms. This is due to the lack of many extras, including the stereo subwoofer. If we abstract from global comparisons and look only at performance indicators, then the DELL device turned out to be very capable. And if you take into account the price, then the questions of leadership disappear by themselves.
- high system performance;
- modification possibilities;
- laconic design and lightness of the laptop;
- the cost is half that of ASUS ROG;
- a high degree of reliability, which is very important for gaming laptops.
- not detected.
The second most expensive 17-inch gaming laptop, the Alienware 17, has a unique approach to component selection. It has a Intel Core i7 4910MQ processor with 4 Haswell cores at 2.9GHz, 32GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 880M card that supports 3840×2160 pixels. A Blu-Ray drive for burning discs looks a little atypical in the assembly – the tendency to use disc media is rapidly dying.
Unlike ASUS ROG, the Alienware 17 has one 256 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD with a rotation speed of 7200 rpm. The power supply parameters allow the laptop to work autonomously for 4 hours – this is a plus compared to the previous representative of the rating. However, it should be understood that this device is less efficient. But the cost is one and a half times lower – a weighty argument in favor of the purchase.
- moderately powerful system components;
- availability of a fast HDD and SSD-drive;
- battery with increased power efficiency;
- original design and 4 kilograms of weight.
- not detected.
ASUS ROG CHIMERA G703GX-EV154T
Awfully expensive but powerful laptop ASUS ROG CHIMERA G703GX-EV154T is the most popular mobile device for gaming. It is an example of an unbalanced build that accommodates one of Nvidia's top-end cards, the 8GB GeForce RTX 2080, and a fairly standard 6-core 2.2GHz Core i7 8750H. Inside the system is a serious 32GB of 2666MHz DDR 4 RAM, and users have the option to expand the amount of RAM up to 64GB. We are not hinting at anything, but at such capacities you can not only play, but also engage in quite detailed rendering.
As drives in the ASUS ROG CHIMERA G703GX-EV154T, 2 SSDs with 512 GB are installed. Naturally, the speed of work in this case increases many times over, since all calculations and access to data will be faster. Under the recognizable body of the device is hidden not only powerful hardware, but also a good stereo system with two speakers and a subwoofer. All this negatively affects weight indicators, increasing it to 4.7 kg. The lithium-ion battery is honestly trying to take out power, but in vain: the capacity of 4200 mAh is hardly enough for 3 hours of full-time operation.
- popular and prestigious series of gaming laptops;
- the most powerful config within the entire category;
- huge potential for modification;
- built-in stereo system.
- very high purchase price.
MSI GL73 8SDK-296XRU
Due to the lower price tag, the MSI GL73 8SDK-296XRU laptop is a line higher than ASUS TUF Gaming. It has exactly two differences in terms of system components: 8 GB of preinstalled memory (albeit 2666 MHz) and a 128 GB SSD. At the same time, the potential for expanding RAM is the same as that of a competitor, and no one bothers to install another disk optionally.
As for the rest of the nuances, firstly, the database again contains a processor from Intel: a 4-core Core i5 8300H of the Cofee-Lake architecture. Secondly, there are no additional options with a graphics card: only the 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti. The beautiful 'packaging' has an RGB keyboard backlit, and the entire assembly weighs 2.9 kilograms. The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 4.25 Ah and can provide autonomous operation up to 5-6 hours (in non-gaming mode).
Everything seems to be good: in terms of system components, in visual terms and in price. But here's the problem: by purchasing MSI GL73 8SDK-296XRU, you get a laptop without an installed OS. Of course, for many this will seem like a small problem, but getting a license out of the box is also a kind of plus.
- the ability to customize the laptop;
- powerful video card in the database without alternatives;
- moderately capacious battery;
- as always, nice design and backlighting.
- no OS.
ASUS TUF Gaming FX705DU-AU035T
Moving to the line above and telling you about the more 'budget' ASUS representative in this category. The TUF Gaming FX705DU-AU035T model was created for those who value the comfort of moving a laptop across locations, as well as for those who want to get a system on new hardware. For the first time in the entire ranking, we come across a device that runs on an AMD processor, namely the Ryzen 7 3750H with 4 Zen cores and a clock speed of 2.3 GHz. As the price rises, you can find the following modifications of this model:
- with integrated video card Radeon RX Vega 10;
- with 6 GB discrete GeForce GTX 1660 Ti;
- with a combination of discrete and integrated card.
Naturally, the quality of graphics in all cases will be excellent, do not even hesitate.
As for the RAM in ASUS TUF Gaming FX705DU-AU035T, everything is also in order: 16 GB at 2400 MHz in the base and the ability to install an additional 16 GB thanks to the second slot. The 1 TB HDD and 256 GB SSD are responsible for the amount of internal memory. The system works quickly and this is what you need for comfortable gaming. Also noteworthy is the lightweight body and 4140mAh battery, which is honestly trying to extend battery life to acceptable results.
- SSD 256 GB;
- lightweight body, thanks to which the laptop weighs only 2.7 kg;
- AMD Ryzen 7 based system;
- powerful and modern graphics card included;
- optimal amount of internal memory;
- nice design and a large enough battery.
- in model modifications there are only variants with an integrated graphics card – be careful.
Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH317-52-525L)
The rating of gaming laptops is opened by a representative of the company Acer. This Predator Helios 300 model is based on a Core i5 8300H chip with a clock frequency of 2.3 GHz. Not bad, although an i7 with a higher potential would have looked better (it is in the series, but installed on other modifications). But as a video card, a 6-gig Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 is used, paired with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 630. The default RAM is 16 gigabytes of DDR4 at 2666 MHz, but you can easily double this number, as in assembly provides one more empty slot.
The advantage of the Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH317-52-525L) is the installed 128GB SSD, which complements the 1TB HDD. This achieves high processing speed and system operations, which is very important in the case of gaming laptops. We also note the backlighting of the keyboard in the area of the WASD buttons, a very neat and attractive design of the case and a matte screen with increased image definition.
- powerful configuration of system components;
- the possibility of custom upgrades;
- excellent video card with 6 GB of memory;
- availability of SSD-drive;
- backlit keyboard and attractive case design.
- other things being equal, it is more expensive than analogues.
The best 17-inch laptops for work and study
Work and study laptops, as a rule, do not have high performance, but at the same time they cost several times less than gaming ones. They are fast enough to work in multi-window mode, provide stability in 'heavy' applications, and even run some less demanding games. However, they are unlikely to cope with the top novelties of the gaming industry, and the appearance cannot be compared with the illuminated and customized cases of special game devices.
Acer ASPIRE 7 (A717-72G-54W4)
Finally, let's talk about the Acer ASPIRE 7 in the most popular configuration, which took the first line in the category of office and educational laptops. It is powered by a 4-core Core i5 8300H 2300MHz chip, 8GB of RAM with DDR4 memory, and powerful graphics cards … and there is little user choice here. The fact is that this model comes in several versions: either with a 4-gig GTX 1060, or with a similar GTX1050 and an additional integrated HD Graphics 630 card. Both options are equally acceptable, therefore, the whole difference rests only on cost.
With internal memory, this model Acer ASPIRE 7 did not come up with fantastic combinations: everything was done by installing one 1TB hard disk with a rotational speed of 5400 rpm. But what the developers did not manage to think well was the battery and the accompanying power supply parameters. 3320 mAh is clearly not enough for such a powerful config, so the battery life can be calculated in just a few hours. The basic cost of such a model differs by only a couple of thousand from the price of previous competitors, therefore, you can draw parallels yourself and look for the most optimal option for you.
- powerful system components;
- the ability to select a video card in the config (GTX 1060 or GTX 1050);
- stylish metal body with austere features;
- choice of two preinstalled operating systems – Linux or Windows 10;
- suitable for games.
- low energy efficiency in offline mode.
ASUS Vivo Book 17
In the correspondence confrontation between HP ProBook and ASUS Vivo Book, the victory remains with the latter. With a Intel Core i7 8565U at 1.8GHz, this laptop has 12GB of RAM and a GeForce MX110 graphics card with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. With all this, the cost turns out to be several thousand rubles lower than that of the compared competitor, therefore, the second line was given fairly.
Another plus of ASUS Vivo Book 17 is that it is equipped with a hard drive HDD for as much as 2 TB! Needless to say, such volumes are simply huge for a standard office laptop? To increase the operating speed for the system Windows 10 Home, a special 128 GB SSD was allocated. Now about the nuances. Firstly, serious components greatly affected the power supply parameters, and therefore a 4050 mAh lithium-ion battery lasts only 5 hours of laptop operation. Secondly, the display of the 17-inch device was produced using a TFT TN matrix, which can cause eye damage during operation. Consider these factors when choosing.
- 12 GB of RAM in the database;
- 2 TB HDD hard drive;
- availability of an SSD-drive for the operating system;
- powerful configuration;
- good visual performance.
- short battery life (5 hours in power saving mode);
- TN matrix.
HP ProBook 470 G5
A very expensive but by no means goofy device from HP, powered by a Core i7 8550U CPU with 1800 MHz memory. Actually, these are the advantages of assembling system components and are limited. Neutral can be taken to 8 GB of pre-installed RAM with the right to expand to 16 GB, but only at a frequency of 2400 MHz. And to celebrate with complete indignation the installation of the NVIDIA GeForce 930MX video card with 2 GB GDDR3 memory.
How does the HP ProBook 470 G5 get out of this situation? First, it takes reliability. Unlike previous competitors, its body is made of a metal alloy, lightweight and not easily soiled. The total weight of the assembly is only 2.5 kilograms, which is 300 grams less than the weight of the category opponents. It comes with a 1 year extended warranty plus a full licensed version Windows 10 Pro installed. In general, there is something to cover the flaws in the configuration, but not every user can buy such a laptop.
- the ability to install a 512 GB SSD drive (instead of a 1 TB HDD);
- extended warranty;
- lightweight metal body weighing 2.5 kilograms;
- battery life.
- not the most optimal equipment in relation to the price.
DELL Inspiron 3780
An interesting situation occurs with DELL Inspiron 3780. This device is sold in 2 color variations: black and silver, and the difference in price between them can be up to 6 thousand rubles. Yes, maybe the austere silver case looks more solid, but we decided to evaluate the model from the point of view of the basic version. It is powered by a 4-core Core i5 8265U processor clocked at 1600 MHz. A controversial decision, especially in the wake of comparison with ASUS FX, but our category fits perfectly. The role of video cards is played by a discrete AMD Radeon 520 at 2 gig DDR5. As for the RAM, here you can choose from several options: either 8 GB DDR4 at 1600 MHz, or the same config at 2400 and 2666 MHz, respectively. There is something in the store will come across.
A big plus of DELL Inspiron 3780 is the availability of 1 TB HDD and 128 GB SSD. The first one is suitable for file storage, and the second one – for loading the system, due to which the operating speed can exceed that of the model from ASUS. The operating system is also Linux, but nothing else from DELL is worth waiting for.
- several cases to choose from (black – cheaper, silver – more expensive);
- 2 slots for RAM and support for all base frequencies for DDR4 memory;
- availability of an SSD drive;
- a good option for a central processing unit (CPU) with a Whiskey Lake architecture.
- the video card is an ordinary budget 'plug'.
ASUS FX753VD is a laptop that is on the verge between a productive gaming platform and a gadget for solving work tasks. It is expensive, but the high cost is justified by the available system components. Unlike previous representatives of the segment, the most affordable model runs on a Core i5 7300HQ chip with 4 cores at a frequency of 2500 MHz. The running GeForce 1050 2 GB acts as a video card. As for the amount of RAM, in the presence of two slots, it can be increased from the standard 8 to 32 GB if the user needs to work with graphic editors and rendering.
The main feature of ASUS FX753VD is the type of operating system. Few of the Russian users have come across the Endless OS, developed on the platform Linux. And it seems that, all other things being equal, this factor should have a negative effect on the popularity of the model. However, buyers recognized it as almost the best option among others.
- 2 slots for RAM dies supporting up to 32 gigs of memory;
- quite powerful 4-core processor;
- 1 TB hard drive;
- high quality image transmission;
- can be used for games.
- high price.
DELL Inspiron 5770
The line above is the most affordable DELL Inspiron 5770 configuration based on a 2-core Core i3 7020U processor with a frequency of 2200 MHz. In addition to technical and functional reliability, this laptop provides users with good performance and ample opportunities to customize the workspace. In the base, it has 4 GB of DDR4 RAM, which can be independently expanded up to 16 gigs. A couple of cards are responsible for graphics processing: built-in Intel UHD Graphics and 2-gig AMD Radeon 530.
The maximum resolution of DELL Inspiron 5770 is 1920 x 1080 pixels. The screen matrix is made using TFT IPS technology and does not strain the eyes, which has a positive effect on the duration of working sessions. The volume of the hard disk installed without an alternative is 1000 GB, and the rotation speed does not exceed 5400 rpm. A significant nuance for many users may be that the device runs on OS Linux, and therefore it will not become a priority choice even among less productive competitors.
- the possibility of expanding the amount of RAM;
- IPS-matrix and high-resolution display;
- 1 TB drive;
- dual graphics card;
- good appearance.
- the operating system Linux is not very popular among users in Russia.
Lenovo Ideapad 330-17ICH
With laptops from Lenovo, you should be extremely careful, because their performance is unpredictable. Perhaps one of the few stable models is the Ideapad 330-17ICH based on a Core i3 8130U processor with a frequency of 2.2 GHz. As a rule, it makes sense to purchase it with only 8 GB of RAM, since less RAM will be the more 'crutch' for working with applications. Thanks to this configuration, it manages to keep within the cost of up to 40 thousand rubles, while it does not matter which video card is installed: Radeon 530 or GeForce MX150 – both of them show themselves equally in the given conditions.
Lenovo The Ideapad 330-17ICH has 2 USB 3.1 Type-A, 1 Type-C, as well as an HDMI output and a combined mini jack 3.5. It is noteworthy that in the selected configuration there is only a 256 GB SSD kit. In general, a great option when it comes to performance, and not about storing large amounts of data. Although for this case, cloud storage has long been invented.
- SSD drive included;
- IPS-screen with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels;
- weight 2.8 kilograms.
- quite high price for an acceptable configuration;
- lack of a preinstalled OS in the selected system kit.
