12 best gaming laptops

Top computer ratings

Review of the best according to the editorial board. On the selection criteria. This material is subjective and does not constitute advertising and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before buying, you need to consult with a specialist.

Until relatively recently, laptops could not compete with desktop PCs in terms of the performance that video games require. But as technology has improved, the situation has changed, and now gaming laptops meet the needs of gaming without any conventions. Today's rating review is dedicated to just such high-performance notebooks.

How to choose a laptop for gaming

To begin with, we will guide the reader in the basic principles that should be followed when choosing a gaming laptop. In many ways, you should pay attention to the same thing as when buying a regular desktop PC (processor, RAM, graphics module, hard drive), but a few more nuances are added to this list – characteristics of the screen, built-in sound system, cooling, design.

CPU

There is no need to think too much about the choice of a processor in a gaming laptop in the current market environment, since the overwhelming majority of manufacturers themselves offer only two options – Intel Core i5 or Core i7. The first option is suitable for optimal interaction with GTX 1050-1060 video cards or their analogues. Core i7 will fit any other laptop configuration, including top-end GTX 1070-1080 graphics cards.

RAM

The obvious scheme “the more the better” works here, but still huge amounts of RAM are not always advisable, at least from the point of view of price. However, 8GB memory may already be insufficient for many gaming tasks as of 2018. Therefore, it is worth taking a closer look at modifications equipped with at least 16 GB of RAM (such models will be presented in the rating from). A volume of 32 GB or more is logical if you prefer to play strictly at maximum speed, or if, in addition to games, you are also involved in processing heavy graphics and video. In any case, you should also pay attention to the expansion possibilities (maximum allowable size), since over time the laptop can be supplemented with additional memory.

Video card

This is perhaps the most important component in the context of modern video games. The minimum configuration of a laptop may imply an integrated video card, but for a full-fledged game, a discrete one will be required anyway. On most modern laptops, these are video cards of the GeForce GTX family from 1050 to 1080. On top-end machines with the maximum configuration, there may even be two discrete video cards. Here you should already start from your budget.

More recently, manufacturers installed 'stripped-down' graphics modules with the 'M' prefix on gaming laptops. Modern models are already equipped with full-fledged versions, which are in no way inferior in performance to desktop models.

The most minimalistic version – GeForce GTX 1050 – will allow you to play most of the current games for 2018 at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with medium graphics settings. Most, but not all. The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti performs significantly better. In this case, most of the games will run at high settings, sometimes even at maximum speed. For example, Destiny 2, Call of Duty WWII, Star Wars Battlefront 2 will completely overcome the threshold of 60 FPS on high graphics settings, and Overwatch will even master the maximum settings.

Nevertheless, the slightly older model, the GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB of memory, will still be much better. This option almost guarantees a pleasant 60 FPS in most modern games Full HD at maximum speed. Anything that is more powerful, it makes sense to consider if you prefer to play strictly in 4K, and the screen of the laptop intended for purchase has such a resolution.

HDD

This is not to say that mechanical hard drives HDDs have completely lost their relevance, but for a gaming laptop, a solid-state SSD is almost a prerequisite. The speed of solid-state drives cannot be compared with mechanical ones, and this is important for a comfortable game. However, the cost of an SSD is more than tangible, so it is worth considering a compromise option – the presence of two drives of both types. Volumes should be considered at least 128GB for SSDs and at least 1TB for HDDs. In our rating, almost every model under consideration has such modifications. Over time, you can make a simple upgrade.

Screen

Another important aspect is a laptop screen with all important parameters – diagonal, resolution, type of matrix, nature of coverage. Most modern laptop manufacturers offer solutions with a screen diagonal of at least 15 inches. Much less often – 14 inches. The upper limit of this indicator is 21 inches.

Resolution varies widely – from 1920×1080 (FHD) to 3840×2160 (4K). Typically, a large, high-resolution screen automatically means a significant addition to the price of the device, so it is worthwhile to be guided by an affordable budget.

Matrices are offered in two types – IPS or TN. The first option has noticeably better viewing angles and a richer image, but they are certainly more expensive than TN.

A glossy finish has a noticeably better color rendering than a matte finish, but automatically implies glare and reflections.

Sound

Unlike desktop PCs, which have an external audio system by definition, gaming laptops have speakers built into the case, and most often such a laptop is also equipped with a built-in subwoofer. The sound quality and bass saturation are all individual for each model, as well as potential troubles – wheezing, rattling and other sound 'artifacts' at high volume. Therefore, it is advisable to study reviews of real users and independent reviews before buying.

Cooling

In desktop PCs, the operation of cooling systems can be completely invisible to the ear due to the large spaces inside the case and, accordingly, more space for installing massive coolers, as well as the lack of the need for prohibitive speeds. Gaming laptop chassis size drastically reduces the margin for variation, which is why noise is a sore point for many gaming laptops. Before buying, you should study independent reviews. It is also important where exactly the blowing will be directed. It is highly undesirable for it to be on the right side, otherwise a stream of hot air will be directed directly at your hand.

Design and material

Here we can already talk about complete taste, but there are some points worth paying attention to. For example – keyboard backlight. For many gamers, this is an important point, and manufacturers do not get tired of offering a variety of options – multi-level backlighting, zoning, RGB backlighting, and more. The case material can be either plastic or aluminum, and the nature of the surface can also be different. The most annoying thing in this case is the soiling of the case, when fingerprints easily remain on the surface of the cover or other parts. Here, too, it is advisable to first study independent experience.

Which is better for gaming – laptop or computer?

As a small summary, before proceeding directly to the rating, we will give a short answer to the question of which is better for gaming – a desktop PC or a gaming laptop. '+ ' denotes an advantage for a specific parameter. '+/- ' – no clear advantage.

– let's make it clear that gaming laptops were significantly and definitely more expensive than their desktop 'counterparts' until the mining era, when prices for video cards skyrocketed. It is this factor that made the difference in price between PC and laptop less dramatic, so the purchase price must be considered on an individual basis.

Lenovo Legion Y520

Rating: 4.8

Lenovo Legion Y520

Laptop dimensions are 383x260x29 mm, weight – 2.2 kg. This volume contains a 15.6-inch screen with an extremely budget matte TN-matrix – in fact, this is the weakest point of this model. Further, the 'stuffing' of the laptop can only be deservedly praised.
