12 best coffee grinders for home

Kitchen Product Ratings

Review of the best according to the editorial board. On the selection criteria. This material is subjective and does not constitute advertising and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before buying, you need to consult with a specialist.

You don't have to be a real gourmet to understand that coffee made from freshly ground beans is much more aromatic and tastier than from older coffee beans. And no hermetic packaging or containers will save you from a significant loss of aroma – the most valuable thing in coffee in general. This review is dedicated to coffee grinders that are optimally suited for home use. Experts have prepared a list of worthy models and grouped them: according to the principle of grinding – rotary and millstones; millstones in terms of affordability are the cheapest; millstones at the best combination of price and quality. As a 'bonus', we also looked at a couple of manual grinder models.

Home coffee grinder of which company to choose

First, let's look at the brands and manufacturers of coffee grinders that appear in our review, and explain why they are worth your attention.

  1. Such high-profile brands as Bosch and De'Longhi need no special introduction. Let's just remind that the first brand is German, and the second is Italian. The production facilities of both are scattered all over the world (globalization), but in general, the quality always corresponds to the class of the manufactured equipment.
  2. The owner of the Nivona brand is a relatively young German company NIVONA Apparate GmbH that entered the market in 2005. Its advantage is its narrow specialization in the production of coffee machines and related products. The assembly of equipment is carried out at factories in Switzerland, Portugal and China.
  3. The Spanish company Cunill with more than half a century of history is even more highly specialized than Nivona. It strictly manufactures coffee grinders and accessories. This is an undeniable plus, but for the most part this technique is close to professional and often very expensive. Products are manufactured in Spain itself.
  4. The Caso brand was created in 2003 by the German company Braukmann GmbH. All equipment under this name is made in China, but the characteristics and reviews are mostly positive.
  5. Rommelsbacher is a solid German brand with a deep, almost century-old history. Small household appliances such as coffee grinders are manufactured in Turkey and China.
  6. The German trade mark ProfiCook belongs to the well-known holding Clatronic Group. These are home appliances for the mass consumer, mostly not of premium quality. But it is inexpensive and well worth its money. Manufactured in China.
  7. Silampos is a Portuguese stainless steel cookware manufacturer. It entered the market in 1951 as a family business. Now Silampos products have real fans all over the world and belong to the premium class, closer to the elite. The prices are appropriate. Manual coffee grinders are manufactured at the Silampos plant in Portugal.

Now we are moving from “foreign” to Russian brands.

  1. VITEK is a well-known and even familiar to our customer trade mark, belongs to the Russian company Golder Electronics. Refers to the middle and lower price segment. One of the best-selling brands of household appliances in the Russian Federation – according to Gallup Media, every third Russian family has products of this brand. Manufactured in China on a contract basis from OEM / ODM companies.
  2. Mikma is a trademark of small household appliances of the Mikromashina plant (Moscow). One of the oldest Russian industrial enterprises. It is positioned as a domestic manufacturer, but there is a share of cunning here – the engines in Mikma coffee grinders are Chinese. It is possible that other parts too, as 'Made in China' is clearly written only on the engine.
  3. ViTESSE is a completely Russian brand, for a long time diligently disguised as French, until the Federal Antimonopoly Service became interested in this circumstance. Now there are no direct statements about the French origin of the ViTESSE technique on the official website, but the 'tricks' with the attributes and positioning remain. The equipment of this brand itself is quite good, affordable, and fully complies with the standards and requirements of Rospotrebnadzor.

Best Electric Rotary Coffee Grinders

Consider the first nomination of our rating of the simplest type of coffee grinders – rotary. The principle of grinding here consists in fast (+/- 3000 rpm) rotation of a specially two- or four-sided knife, which breaks and crushes the grains to the smallest fractions. Blenders work in a similar way. The degree of grinding in such devices is controlled by the processing time in combination with visual observation of the contents of the chamber through a transparent cover. The uniformity of grinding in rotary coffee grinders is for the most part imperfect, but in bulk they are much cheaper than millstones. From the widest offer of the market, our experts have identified the following models: Bosch MKM 6000 (6003), Mikma ECMU IP-30, De'Longhi KG 49, ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021 and Caso Coffee Flavor.

Bosch MKM 6000/6003

Rating: 4.9

Bosch MKM 6000/6003

German Bosch coffee grinders MKM 6000 and 6003 are manufactured at Bosch's own production facilities in Slovenia. This compact device is made in a cylindrical form factor typical for such coffee grinders. Power consumption – 180 watts. Available in two colors: white – 6000 series and black – 6003 series.

The capacity of the bowl for beans is 75 g. The bottom of the bowl is made with an inclination – thanks to this it is possible to avoid sticking of coarse fractions on the walls of the bowl and lid, thereby achieving maximum uniformity of grinding. For the same reason, there is no need to shake the grinder during operation – in devices with a flat bottom, this must be done constantly.

Operation of the coffee grinder is only possible with the lid completely closed – only in this position it becomes possible to press the power button. Not all users like this solution, since the button and, accordingly, the lid must be held by hand all the time.

The knives in the Bosch MKM 6000/6003 are made of stainless steel, but the seat is plastic, and according to numerous reviews, this is one of the weakest points of this model. Compensated for the lack of a 24-month manufacturer's warranty.

Prices: 939 – 3020 rubles.

Advantages

  • European assembly;
  • quality materials;
  • relatively uniform grinding;
  • nice design;

disadvantages

  • fragility of the knife attachment;
  • non-retractable cord.

Mikma ECMU IP-30

Rating: 4.8

Mikma ECMU IP-30

Mikma ECMU IP-30 is a Russian-made coffee grinder, but with Chinese spare parts (at least an engine) it ranks second in our rating. Power consumption is 115 watts. The device weighs 730 g. The shape – the most common for this class of devices – is cylindrical, but the starting principle is somewhat different.

In the Mikma ECMU IP-30 coffee grinder, unlike the previous model, the start button is placed on the body, but the engine will still start only with the lid tightly fixed, and here you will no longer need to hold it with your hand.

Many users do not like the modest capacity of the bowl – only 30 g, but this model is much quieter than the same Bosch MKM 6000/6003. Pulse mode protects the device from overheating. The mechanism for taking the cord inside the case is not provided, as in the previous model.

Prices: 1765 – 2888 rubles.

Advantages

  • quality materials and assembly;
  • thick-walled lid and its reliable fixation;
  • pulse mode;
  • quiet work;
  • protection against switching on when the cover is removed or insufficiently fixed;

disadvantages

  • small maximum dose of one-time grinding;
  • non-retractable cord;
  • not suitable for grinding spices and sugar;

De'Longhi KG 49

Rating: 4.8

De'Longhi KG 49

The Italian De'Longhi KG 49 coffee grinder has significant differences from the two models described above. This is a distinctly higher class and advanced functionality. Customers primarily appreciate the design of the device and the relatively quiet operation. A special 'thank you' is expressed to the manufacturer for the availability of a device for winding the power cord.

The dimensions of the device are 15x25x13 cm, and the weight is 800 g. The capacity of the bowl is quite decent – 90 g. The set includes a special brush for cleaning the bowl.

The De'Longhi KG 49 has a dispenser to accurately calculate the grinding volume per cups. It also has a timer and a grinding indicator, but buyers almost unanimously qualify these functions as useless, which only add value to the grinder.

As for the quality of grinding, the situation here is ambiguous. On the one hand, the uniformity of grinding is close to that of a burr grinder, but at the same time, for many, this result is unstable and varies from portion to portion.

Perhaps the most noticeable drawback is the critical shortage of spare parts, which makes this model practically non-repairable. And there is something to break in it – the locking ring of the knife axis is made of plastic, and due to constant exposure to high temperatures and mechanical loads, it can 'crumble' in the first year of operation.

Prices: 3021 – 5990 rubles.

Advantages

  • Beautiful design;
  • relatively quiet work;
  • cleaning brush included;
  • device for winding the cord;

disadvantages

  • useless functions that add value;
  • unjustified price;
  • questionable durability;
  • unstable grind;
  • problems with spare parts during repair;

ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021

Rating: 4.7

ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021

German coffee grinder ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021 is made in China. Differs in a laconic but stylish design. The metal body made of stainless steel is also a relative rarity among coffee grinders of this class. The features and functionality of this model look very good against the background of an affordable price. More about this.

The power of the device is 200 W. The bowl can hold up to 85 g of coffee beans. The engine is started by pressing on the cover itself, that is, the protection against starting in the open is implemented very elegantly. Pulse mode keeps the grinder from overheating, but many users do not like the frequent triggering of the protection. The body has a device for winding the cord.

The most indisputable advantage of this model is the presence in the set of two removable bowls with different knives: with two and four blades. The first is used to grind coffee, the second is used to grind nuts, herbs, spices.

The ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021 model is covered by an official manufacturer's warranty for a period of 24 months.

Prices: 2500 – 2523 rubles.

Advantages

  • attractive design;
  • versatility;
  • overheat protection;
  • metal case;

disadvantages

  • noisy;
  • heats up quickly before the protection operates.

Caso Coffee Flavor

Rating: 4.7

Caso Coffee Flavor

The Caso Coffee Flavor coffee maker is made in China, but under the patronage and quality control of a German company. This is to some extent a 'cousin' of the above-described ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021 model. Here, in the same way, the case is made of stainless steel with a matte polish and very similar functionality.

The power of the device is 200 W, the volume of the bowl can hold 90 g of coffee beans. The linear dimensions are 20.5×10.7×10.7 cm, and the weight is 950 g. The bowl, like the body, is made of stainless steel. A pulse mode is implemented to protect against overheating. There is a cord reel.

This model, just like the ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021, can not only grind coffee, but also grind spices, herbs and nuts. The only difference is that this model uses the same bowl with a reversible knife for this.

As with the previous model, the PC-KSW 1021 comes with a 24-month manufacturer's warranty.

Prices: 2500 – 2523 rubles.

Advantages

  • attractive design;
  • pulse mode;
  • compartment for cable winding;
  • multipurpose;

disadvantages

  • expressed no.

The best inexpensive grinders with millstones

We turn to a review of another, more advanced category of coffee grinders, in which the millstones perform the direct function of grinding. First, it is also the most important advantage of such coffee grinders over rotary ones – it is almost guaranteed uniformity of grinding. On average, coffee grinders of this type are more expensive than rotary ones, and significantly. Let's start with two models that our experts considered the best in the lower price segment: De'Longhi KG 89 and VITEK VT-1548. Both of them allow mechanical adjustment of the degree of grind.

De'Longhi KG 89

Rating: 4.8

De'Longhi KG 89

The German millstone coffee grinder of the Chinese assembly De'Longhi KG 89 has a strict but elegant design and rather high performance. Its dimensions are 26x13x16 cm, and its weight is 1.7 kg. Power consumption – 110 watts.

The removable transparent container for grains holds 120 g of raw materials. The ground coffee container is also transparent. The body of the grinder is mostly plastic with metal inserts. It is noteworthy that users do not complain about this circumstance, probably due to the high quality of the materials. Rubberized feet provide stability when working. The power cord can be easily stowed inside the case into a special compartment at the base.

There is one serious flaw in this model. Users are almost unanimous that even at the minimum setting, the fineness of grind is not sufficient for making coffee in coffee machines. This is not a final 'verdict', as this model lends itself to simple tuning, and there are enough instructions on this topic on the Internet. But the very fact that a new coffee maker has to be disassembled and reworked by hand upsets many customers.

The second problem is only potential. The millstones in De'Longhi KG 89 are plastic, and this is positioned by the manufacturer as an advantage, they say, the working parts do not overheat. This is true and the grinder can be loaded with continuous operation without the risk of overheating. But plastic is plastic, and this fact is alarming. True, experts did not find direct reviews of the mechanical destruction of millstones.

Prices: 3829 – 7258 rubles.

Advantages

  • relatively quiet work;
  • attractive design;
  • high-quality assembly;

disadvantages

  • even the finest grind is not sufficient for a coffee machine.

VITEK VT-1548

Rating: 4.7

VITEK VT-1548

VITEK VT-1548 is a coffee grinder of the Russian trade mark, produced in China. In addition to its elegant design, users highly appreciate its compactness in this model, which is comparable to rotary models – the dimensions are 22.5x15x9.5 cm and the weight is 1.2 kg.

In terms of functionality, this model is similar to the previous one. There is a portion dispenser, a fineness regulator, an automatic shutdown, and a start lock when the bowl lid is removed. The ground coffee goes into the lower transparent removable container. The grinder stands firmly on rubberized feet and does not 'walk' on the table during operation. The bean compartment holds 125 g of raw material.

The VITEK VT-1548 model is just slightly more powerful than the De'Longhi KG 89 (100 W), but noticeably noisier in operation. In addition, she has exactly the same problem with the smallest grind as De'Longhi – in order to grind coffee 'into dust', the coffee grinder must be tuned with your own hands.

There was also a noticeable number of complaints about sudden and unreasonable failures in work, but in this regard, users are not unanimous, so the possibility of incorrect operation cannot be ruled out.

Advantages

  • compactness;
  • 8 positions for grinding adjustment;
  • the ability to select the volume of grinding per cycle
  • auto shutdown;
  • high-quality assembly;
  • elegant design;

disadvantages

  • noisy;
  • may require reworking for sufficiently fine grinding;
  • frequent complaints about refusals to work;

Rating of the best coffee grinders with millstones in terms of price-quality ratio

And now, in order to fully cover the home grinder segment, we need to go beyond the lower price segment. Our experts considered the following models to be optimal in terms of a combination of reasonable prices, quality characteristics and the necessary functionality: Rommelsbacher EKM 300, Nivona NICG 130 CafeGrano and Cunill brasil . These models are already significantly more expensive than any of the above, and in terms of functionality, they are almost at the upper limit of 'home' coffee grinders. All that is above is already professional equipment, or coffee grinders for catering establishments.

Rommelsbacher EKM 300

Rating: 4.9

Rommelsbacher EKM 300

And again in our review this renowned German brand sounds. The Rommelsbacher EKM 300 coffee grinder with dimensions 14×29.5×18.5 cm is characterized by an impressive capacity of the beans container – 220 g. The chamber for ground coffee is 120 g.

The model is equipped with a dispenser and a regulator of the degrees of grinding. The adjustment is quite subtle – as many as 12 degrees. The dispenser is designed for a number of portions of up to 10. The coffee grinder is supplied with a special brush for cleaning the interior surfaces.

The power consumption of the Rommelsbacher EKM 300 is 150 W. Users appreciate the long-term continuous operation and high performance of this model. Even the cord has received special praise – its length is 1.4 m – this is a rarity. Typically, coffee grinder cords are half the length. In the case there is a device for winding the cable.

Against the background of generally favorable reviews about this coffee grinder, there are complaints about noise, which is often tiresome when preparing coffee for a large family.

Prices: 8250 – 11300 rubles.

Advantages

  • attractive design;
  • spaciousness;
  • high performance;
  • high-quality assembly;

disadvantages

  • noisy.

Nivona NICG 130 CafeGrano

Rating: 4.8

Nivona NICG 130 CafeGrano

The German coffee grinder Nivona NICG 130 CafeGrano is made in China, but the head office closely monitors the quality, so there are no complaints about materials and assembly.

The model is quite original and pleasant to users for its convenience. So, for example, many people appreciate it for the fact that you can grind coffee directly into the horn of the coffee maker. The 58 mm spacing allows the horn to fit almost tightly from most models. The volume of the bean compartment is 200 g. Both bean containers and ground coffee containers have transparent walls.

The grinder consumes 100 W. In this model, 4 main degrees of grinding are implemented, each of which is divided into 4 more, that is, in total there are 16 levels. The built-in timer can be used to control the volume produced.

Many users appreciate this seemingly small detail – the ground coffee does not wake up when removing the container, as is usually the case with many other coffee grinders.

There is, however, a drawback in this coffee grinder – with minimal grinding, the passage into the storage tank can be clogged, and it must be cleaned manually.

Prices: 7636 – 8845 rubles.

Advantages

  • quality materials;
  • relatively quiet work;
  • you can grind directly into the horn;
  • conical millstones;

disadvantages

  • plastic case;
  • clogs at the smallest grind.

Cunill brasil

Rating: 4.5

Cunill brasil

This is exactly the model that was spoken of as the upper limit of the norm for home household coffee grinders. Considering its power – 280 W, the capacity of the raw material compartment – 1000 g, permissible continuous operation time – 30 minutes, productivity – 11 kg / h and cost, Cunill Brasil can even be considered more of a semi-professional equipment. It was decided to include it with a big stretch in the review of household coffee grinders only as a compromise for those cases when it comes to preparing coffee for a really large family of several generations, or for a medium-sized community.

The dimensions of the device are 21x45x36 cm. The coffee grinder contains a dispenser and a tamper, and an effective overheating protection system is implemented. The dispenser is sealed so that the coffee aroma is not lost for a long time.

Cunill Brasil is characterized by special ergonomics – it is noticeable that the engineers have thought through everything to the smallest detail. The handle is very comfortable, the coffee tank is quickly and easily fixed, the dispenser lever can be mounted both on the left and right.

The body is made of plastic, which causes complaints from some users. But the coffee bean tank is made of shatterproof material. The coffee container is dishwasher safe.

Also, some buyers are unhappy with the high noise level of this model, but given its emphasis on professional use, the claim can be considered not entirely justified. The same goes for nagging about the millstone form factor. In Cunill Brasil they are flat, not conical, but in pursuit of uniform grinding, flat millstones overplay conical ones.

Prices: 14387 – 19210 rubles.

Advantages

  • high-quality assembly;
  • overheat protection;
  • long allowable time of continuous operation;
  • perfect uniformity of grinding;
  • wide functionality;
  • high performance;

disadvantages

  • noisy;
  • high price;
  • plastic case;
  • flat millstones;

Rating of the best manual grinder grinders

And as the 'icing on the cake', consider two models of manual millstone coffee grinders. Our experts have identified these specimens on a simple principle: the best among the expensive and the best among the cheap. The favorites were Silampos stellar and Vitesse VS-1680.

Silampos stellar

Rating: 4.7

Silampos stellar

The very name of this model of the manual coffee grinder implies its 'stellar character' (Stellar), which, however, is quite deserved. Everything here is done at the highest level. The thick-walled (0.7 mm) case, like all other external parts, is made of so-called medical or surgical steel with a high content of chromium and nickel (18 and 10%, respectively). Such an alloy is characterized by exceptional strength, a vanishingly small number of micropores, complete resistance to corrosion and deterioration under the influence of the overwhelming majority of aggressive chemicals.

The coffee grinder weighs 0.62 kg, its height is 18 cm. Thanks to the mirror polished surface, Silampos Stellar stands out brightly in the kitchen interior, even against the background of any other metal surfaces. Grinding degree is regulated by a special screw.

Equipped inside with a special metal Impact Disc at the bottom with a thickness of as much as 6.5 mm. The manufacturer's warranty for the body and bottom is 25 years unprecedented for household appliances!

The grinder can be washed in any type of dishwasher, but without the use of abrasives. The set includes a special spoon for coffee, made of the same mirror polished metal.

Prices: 9190 – 9201 rubles.

Advantages

  • high ergonomics;
  • beautiful appearance;
  • premium class;
  • decades of warranty;

disadvantages

  • prohibitive price.

Vitesse VS-1680

Rating: 4.6

Vitesse VS-1680

The coffee grinder of the Russian trade mark Vitesse VS-1680 is produced in China. It weighs 917 g and features an attractive classic design with a predominance of natural wood in the body materials.

The working mechanism is made of metal-ceramic elements. The grind is easily adjustable from finest to coarse. The ground coffee is poured into the mini pull-out wooden drawer at the bottom.

Many customers note that for the grind regulator to work properly, it is necessary to lightly rivet the handle and lubricate all parts of the regulator. This is far from the only time a coffee grinder needs such manual tuning to achieve the desired grind. But these temporary inconveniences are compensated for by the affordable price and subsequent long work without unpleasant surprises.

Some users note that the receiving slot in the millstones is too narrow, they say, not every grain will enter it, but such reviews are extremely rare.

Prices: 2 599 rub.

Advantages

  • classic design;
  • even grinding;
  • durability;
  • quality materials;

disadvantages

  • narrow receiving slot in millstones;
  • requires refinement.

Which coffee grinder to buy for home

  1. Of the rotary coffee grinders described, the undisputed favorite is the ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021 due to the vanishingly small number of shortcomings, versatility, clear differentiation of devices for grinding various products, the very fact of the documented acceptability of such widespread use, etc. But Caso Coffee Flavor is also no worse, but sometimes even better, so the models can be considered equivalent. The rest of the solutions described are significantly behind on all fronts.
  2. Out of a pair of inexpensive electric grinders De'Longhi KG 89 and VITEK VT-1548, the second is truly inexpensive. Considering that they both need tuning for the optimal degree of grinding, and neither one nor the other has clear advantages in other parameters, then De'Longhi KG 89 will be an obvious overpayment for the name. Therefore, if the brand is not fundamental, it is more advisable to choose VITEK VT-1548.
  3. Of the optimal models in terms of price and quality, the Rommelsbacher EKM 300 and Nivona NICG 130 CafeGrano are practically equal. One has disadvantages that the other does not, and vice versa. The only thing – if you know for sure that you will grind coffee mainly 'into dust', choose Rommelsbacher, since Nivona has obvious problems with the passage of the smallest fractions. The Cunill Brasil model does not even want to be put on a par with these models, since this device already has a big claim for industrial use. It makes sense to take it if you intend to quickly prepare coffee for dozens of people.
  4. Finally, with manual grinders, everything is extremely simple. Vitesse VS-1680 is a lovely, sweet, 'warm' and inexpensive grinder that will last and delight the eye for years. Silampos Stellar is something beyond the horizon. A bright, sparkling pearl. If you are willing to spend that amount on a manual grinder, chances are you know what you are doing and do not need recommendations.
