11 best uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)

Ratings of electronics and engineering goods

Review of the best according to the editorial board. On the selection criteria. This material is subjective and does not constitute advertising and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before buying, you need to consult with a specialist.

Power outages can occur virtually anywhere in Russia. This may be the fault of the wiring placed inside the walls of the room. Or some problems in the so-called 'shield' lead to this. More global outages are also possible when something happens inside the substation. But a sharp disappearance of electricity can lead to a breakdown of one or another device. In this regard, the online magazine recommends thinking about buying an uninterruptible power supply. Here we will talk about the main aspects of choosing such a device, as well as about the best models among those present in Russian stores.

How to choose a UPS?

  1. If you look at the list of existing uninterruptible power supplies, you will be surprised at their variety. Such devices can differ from each other very strongly, almost cardinally. This is due to the fact that different UPSs can have completely different purposes. That is, first the buyer needs to decide on which electrical appliance the device will be used to connect. Some devices are relatively modest in size, and they can only be powered by some small electronics. But if the UPS turns out to be larger, and its output power (indicated in watts or volt-amperes) is noticeably higher, then the product will even cope with the transfer of energy to a computer with a top-end video card. There is also a separate class of uninterruptible power supplies designed to connect refrigerators, gas boilers and other similar equipment.
  2. If we talk about the technical characteristics of the UPS, then pay attention not only to the power, but also to the operating time. After all, it depends on this parameter how much time you will have, for example, to save the document. Let's say the device can have a power of 500 W and a runtime of 3 minutes. This means that when you connect a less powerful computer after a loss of electricity, you can work for another five to six minutes. Some models support the installation of additional batteries, sometimes a separate case is used for this – this will increase the operating time. However, do not forget that, first of all, the UPS serves to stabilize electricity, the creators focus on this function, they rarely think about capacious batteries.
  3. All uninterruptible power supplies can be divided into three categories. The simplest and cheapest UPSs belong to the backup type – such devices have passive filters, the transition to their own batteries is carried out in the absence of voltage or its very strong increase. For some devices, such a UPS is contraindicated, it may take too long to switch to power from the built-in batteries. Much faster in this regard are interactive-type devices with a step voltage stabilizer. Moreover, such UPSs try to switch to using batteries only when there is a very strong voltage change, which prolongs their service life. There are also double conversion UPSs. Such devices should be bought by owners of expensive equipment – they have better reliability, excellent voltage stabilization and a very long service life.
  4. Remember also that when choosing a UPS, you need to pay attention to the power connectors used in it. By the way, the device may also have additional interfaces. With their help, for example, you can protect a local network or telephone line. If the device has a USB interface, then you can count on the ability to configure the device globally using a computer and appropriate software.

Best Uninterruptible Power Supplies for Computers

Powercom Imperial IMD-1200AP

Rating: 4.9

Powercom Imperial IMD-1200AP

A very good UPS for those who are not ready to spend more than 11 thousand rubles on such a device. The device is able to provide power to almost any computer – this is evidenced by the high output power, reaching 1200 VA. With a power outage, the user will have about half an hour to shut down the PC correctly. You can connect to the product not only a monitor with a system unit, but also some peripherals – four sockets are definitely enough for this. There are also two additional sockets here, but they are connected only to the voltage regulator, they do not receive power from the batteries. Please note that all sockets are IEC 320 C13 ('computer plug').

The device has an interactive type of work. This means that the switchover to battery power is very fast – just 4ms. At the same time, the device does an excellent job of stabilizing electricity – jumps in the network will definitely not force you to switch to battery operation, but they certainly will not reach the PC in its original form. There is an LCD display on the UPS case, which displays the main parameters. You can change some algorithms of work through a computer by connecting to the USB connector. Full recharging of the batteries here takes about six hours. Like almost all representatives of this rating, Powercom Imperial IMD-1200AP allows you to change batteries (they do not last forever), including hot swapping. This UPS can also please with the ability to protect the local network. In short, this is a very good 13-kg uninterruptible power supply, which should more than suit any ordinary user.

APC by Schneider Electric Back-UPS Pro BR900GI

Rating: 4.8

APC by Schneider Electric Back-UPS Pro BR900GI

One of the most modest UPSs in our rating. If the instance considered above has very capacious batteries, then this model focuses on stabilizing the incoming electricity. Of course, there are also batteries, but at full load they only provide 4.6 minutes of operation. However, this will be enough to save the document and turn off the computer. And if the load is half, then the operating time increases to 16.3 minutes.

We do not recommend connecting a computer with a gaming graphics card to this uninterruptible power supply. The fact is that the output power of the product does not exceed 900 VA (540 W). Like the previous model reviewed, this UPS offers four battery-powered outlets. The difference lies in the fact that the number of additional sockets is equal to the same four pieces. That is, voltage can be stabilized for a whole zoo of devices! And yes, this model also belongs to the interactive type. However, the switching time to the battery is quite long here – it reaches 8 ms.

The sockets used here are type IEC 320 C13. It is present on the UPS case and an LCD display – it allows you to familiarize yourself with the current properties of electricity. The UPS is also able to please with jacks for connecting a local network and a telephone line. Complaints to the manufacturer can only be made about the battery charging time of up to eight hours. However, in most cases this parameter does not play any role.

Please note that reviews for this model are written not only in a positive way. Unfortunately, users note a high percentage of defects – almost half of the issued uninterruptible power supplies fail after one or two years. Therefore, we still do not recommend buying this device, stopping at some other model.

  • The high cost of the UPS and its batteries;

  • The service life cannot be called particularly long;

Ippon Smart Power Pro 1000

Rating: 4.8

Ippon Smart Power Pro 1000

Another interactive uninterruptible power supply in our ranking. It is also primarily intended for connecting a computer and peripherals, as evidenced by the type of sockets used here. In total, the device is endowed with six sockets, but only four of them are connected to the batteries. They all belong to the computer type. Voltage stabilization here occurs in a stepwise manner. If the voltage in the network disappears, then literally in 8 ms, switching to the batteries occurs. Their full charge is enough for about 5 minutes of operation at half load. Most often, this time is sufficient for the correct shutdown of the computer.

As befits all devices included in our rating, the product has a decent output power. 600 W – this parameter indicates that the device will provide electricity not only to the monitor with the system unit, but also, for example, to the printer. Also on the Powercom Imperial IMD-1200AP case there is a connector for connecting a telephone line. But there is no LCD display here – only LED indicators signal the operating mode. Rating: 4.7

Powercom Imperial IMD-825AP

One of the most compact uninterruptible power supplies in our ranking. The weight of this 'baby' does not exceed 7.4 kg. Of course, on the case of such a small device there could not be a place for an abundance of sockets. In total, the device offers five places for computer plugs. It should be remembered that only three of them are connected to the batteries, and this is already a critical parameter. The voltage stabilization here is stepwise, and the device itself belongs to the interactive type. The manufacturer allows you to configure your UPS through a computer – this is the USB interface. The current parameters are displayed on the LCD. When switching to battery power, which takes only 4ms, a beep sounds.

The power of the product is 825 VA (495 W). We can safely say that the device can power any office computer. Most of all, the UPS will please with the battery runtime – it is 15 minutes. But the charging time of the batteries leaves much to be desired – it takes 6 hours to fill them with energy. Protects the UPS not only for equipment, but also for the local network, the connector for which is easily located on the case. Perhaps the Powercom Imperial IMD-825AP is an excellent option for those who want to get a compact UPS at their disposal.

Ippon Innova G2 2000

Rating: 4.8

Ippon Innova G2 2000

An even more powerful unit. It got into our rating thanks to the presence of four outlets. It should be noted that they are all of the computer type (IEC 320 C13). Yet they are battery powered. The uninterruptible power supply itself has a sinusoidal output waveform. That is, the device uses double energy conversion. This provides an almost lightning-fast transition to battery power – the connected equipment will definitely not notice anything. The disadvantage of this solution is the noise, which reaches 44 dB at certain times.

The power of this model is 2000 VA (1800 W). There is an LCD display on the UPS case, which displays almost all the necessary information. Also, the product has USB and RS-232 interfaces (the second is not present in all modifications, so check this point additionally). Advanced users should be pleased with the SNMP support.

P-Com Pro 3H

Rating: 4.7

P-Com Pro 3H

The most powerful double conversion UPS in our ranking. Its output power reaches 3000 VA (2700 W) – it is difficult to imagine what electrical appliances would not have had such a parameter. But the device is also very expensive – in some online stores the price tag reaches 42 thousand rubles. However, the output of some devices connected to the mains can be out of order at an even bigger pretty penny.

There are three Euro sockets on the body of this model (CEE 7 standard). They are all powered by batteries. The product has a very high input power factor, and it also has a fuse – such an element is not found in every UPS. The manufacturer did not forget about the LCD display, which displays all the most important information. The socket for connecting a local network can also please someone. Of the other additional interfaces, only RS-232 can be distinguished. Also, the product allows you to expand your connectivity options by purchasing additional accessories.

The P-Com Pro 3H also has one serious drawback. The fact is that the above price includes only the device itself. Batteries will have to be purchased separately, and they cannot be called cheap either.

Advantages

  • Built-in fuse;

  • There is an LCD display;

  • There is an RS-232 interface;

  • Long service life;

  • Excellent input power factor;

  • Huge power;

  • Almost perfect overload and short circuit protection;

The best UPSs for home with conventional outlets

P-Com Pro 3S

Rating: 4.9

P-Com Pro 3S

One of the best UPS for professional use. It is capable of delivering a maximum of 2700 W, which is enough even for the operation of several irons. Of course, this device is designed to stabilize electricity supplied to the most expensive devices, which would be very sorry to lose due to an accidental voltage surge. At half load, the UPS is capable of providing a five minute runtime. But is it necessary to say that most often the UPS will not be loaded even by 25%, and therefore the operating time will be much longer?

Perhaps this is almost the only representative of our rating that actually does not have any significant shortcomings. You can only complain about the price tag reaching 50 thousand rubles. Although not everyone will be satisfied with the fact that there are only three Euro sockets. However, if necessary, you can always use a splitter. The device also has other connectors, including a slot for additional interfaces. You can also protect your local network with P-Com Pro 3S. The current parameters are displayed on the LCD. It should also be noted that there is a fuse here, which, if necessary, will work almost instantly.

Advantages

  • There is an LCD screen;

  • Excellent noise filtering and protection against power failure;

  • There is an RS-232 interface;

  • Nearly maximum input power factor;

  • Decent runtime;

  • Double conversion is applied;

  • Very high cost;

INELT Monolith K1000LT

Rating: 4.8

INELT Monolith K1000LT

Relatively inexpensive uninterruptible power supply, sold for about 22 thousand rubles. We can say that this is one of the most affordable double conversion UPS, capable of switching to battery power almost instantly. The savings forced the manufacturer to reduce the power to 1000 VA (700 W). Nevertheless, this is quite enough for connecting several electrical appliances. For this, two Euro sockets are used here. Both of them are, of course, capable of being powered by batteries.

The UPS is capable of boasting a low non-linear overlap ratio – this parameter does not exceed 3% here. Also, the RS-232 connector, which is used to configure the product through a computer, should please. A pleasant bonus can be considered an LCD display, which displays data on the current status of the UPS and the mains. Also, light indicators located to the left of the display indicate certain modes of operation.

Perhaps the main feature of the device is fast battery charging. The trouble is that the product is supplied without batteries, they will have to be purchased separately. Even more surprising is the fact that only two wires with terminals are included in the kit – to connect three batteries, you will have to make a couple of the same cables yourself. This is not to say that it is difficult, but such an activity will definitely take you some time.

Advantages

  • High-speed battery charging;

  • Excellent input power factor;

  • Low weight;

  • High enough power;

  • There is an RS-232 interface;

  • High reliability;

  • Double conversion is used;

disadvantages

  • Lean kit;

  • The fan is too noisy;

  • There are only two sockets;

  • Batteries need to be purchased separately;

APC BY SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC BACK-UPS BE550G-RS

Rating: 4.7

APC BY SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC BACK-UPS BE550G-RS

The simplest UPS, belonging to the redundant type. The output signal here is in the form of a step approximation of a sinusoid. The device itself resembles a surge protector, only it is much larger in size. In its upper part there are eight Euro sockets. Only half of them are connected to the batteries, the rest can boast only of stabilized voltage. It should be noted that large batteries in such a UPS could not fit, therefore the output power of the product is only 550 VA (330 W). That is, the UPS can power an office computer without a video card, but nothing more. I am glad that at full load the operating time is 3.2 minutes – this is definitely enough to save documents. At half load, the operating time rises to a perfectly sane 12 minutes.

Despite the apparent simplicity, the device from APC is capable of boasting a quick transition to battery power. Also, one cannot fail to note the efficiency, reaching 98.7%. This UPS protects not only electrical appliances, but also the telephone line – the corresponding connector can be easily found on the case.

As you might guess, an uninterruptible power supply for 6-7 thousand rubles. could not do without certain simplifications. Firstly, there is no LCD display – instead of it, the operating modes are signaled by light indicators. Secondly, there is quite a noticeable noise during battery operation. Thirdly, it takes 16 hours to fully charge the batteries.

Advantages

  • Very low price;

  • Switching time to battery does not exceed 6 ms;

  • Decent runtime at half load;

  • High efficiency;

  • Telephone line protection is possible;

  • Minimum dimensions and weight;

  • A large number of outlets;

disadvantages

  • Very long battery charging;

  • Switches to batteries at the slightest voltage surges;

  • The output power is not particularly high;

  • No LCD display;

  • High noise level;

Conclusion

This is a list of the best UPSs designed to connect certain devices. If you live in a small village, using a water heater or boiler, then you definitely need an uninterruptible power supply. Such a device will also come in handy in case of constant work on a computer in a room with not the best wiring – a sharp power outage will destroy the fruit of labor after the last file was saved. In short, we recommend that you definitely think about a UPS. Practice shows that such a device is almost never superfluous.
