The best budget Dell laptops
First of all, let's pay attention to the category that interests the mass consumer the most – the most affordable laptops. Experts considered two notebooks of the famous INSPIRON line to be the most successful in this respect. Although in the nomenclature of the series they differ only by one number, in terms of technical characteristics they differ significantly.
DELL INSPIRON 5770
Let's start with a model that is more interesting and, accordingly, more expensive. This laptop stands out for two points – a large 17.3-inch screen with a matte surface and a wide range of modifications. Thus, if you are guided by the minimum budget, then the complete set should be selected accordingly, and we will describe the possible options further.
So, the large screen of the laptop is equipped with a budget, but quite solid TN-matrix in the available resolution options to choose from – either FullHD 1920×1080, or a slightly non-standard, but less expensive 1600×900.
The diagonal of the laptop screen naturally determined the dimensions of the laptop – 415.4×279.2×25 mm and its net weight – 2.79 kg. The design is discreet, but graceful, resembling, according to the opinions of buyers, laptops Apple. Color options – metallic silver, gray, black.
There are four processor base choices offered by the manufacturer – Intel Core i3, i5, i7 and Pentium 4415U. The latter is comparable in performance to the Core i3. RAM kit – 4 or 8 GB DDR4 1.6 GHz, maximum upgrade options – 16 GB. In the most modest configuration, the video subsystem functions will be taken over by the graphics module integrated into the CPU, in the most advanced – a separate AMD Radeon 530 card with 4 GB memory.
When it comes to 'hard' storage media, the minimum configuration will have a 1TB 'slow' mechanical drive in the laptop, while the maximum configuration will be supplemented by a 'fast' 128GB SSD.
Communication with networks and external devices: 'air' – Wi-Fi class 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0; wired – Ethernet card, one USB 2.0 and 3.1 Type-C, HDMI.
- stylish design;
- Screen size;
- keyboard backlight (optional);
DELL INSPIRON 5570
The second and final item in the Dell budget laptops group is a more modest in performance, but also more affordable model of the same INSPIRON line.
The first, and most noticeable, how this series differs from the previous one is the screen size. Here the diagonal is smaller – 15.6 “. The resolution of the TN-matrix can be minimum 1366×768 or FullHD – 1920×1080. The coating is matte. The dimensions of the laptop are 380x258x19.9 mm, the weight is 2.02 kg. The plastic case can be selected from nine colors, from ordinary ones like white, black or silver, to 'exotic' like yellow or blue.
DELL offers a processor base from Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 with a frequency of 1.6 to 2.0 GHz. Nominal equipment with RAM – 4-8 GB with a reserve of additional equipment up to 16 GB DDR4 2.4 GHz. As part of the modifications, the options for the graphics subsystems built into the processor are Intel HD Graphics 520/620 or a separate AMD Radeon 530 card.
The minimum configuration will install a 'slow' (5400 rpm) HDD up to 1 TB; the maximum is supposed to be a pair of media, where the system will be a high-speed 128 GB SSD. Also assumes a DVD-RW drive and a working SD memory slot.
Connection to external environment – wireless wi-fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1; as well as wired through a standard network card, USB 2.0 or 3.1 Type-C, HDMI.
Despite the budget of the laptop, INSPIRON 5570 in most modifications is equipped with aesthetic illumination of the keyboard unit.
- relatively affordable price;
- comfortable, well thought-out keyboard;
- surprisingly good sound from the built-in speakers;
- keyboard backlight;
- strong build;
- ample opportunities for upgrading memory and hard drives.
- Wi-Fi is slowly waking up from standby.
The best Dell laptops for value for money
The next selection in the presented rating is Dell laptops, which, in terms of the totality of their characteristics, can be considered the most acceptable for purchase for reasons of performance and cost. We will look at three representatives of different lines – Vostro, INSPIRON and LATITUDE. Looking ahead, let's say that all of them, as expected, have built-in standard combined jack-sockets for connecting external speakers or headphones and a microphone.
DELL Vostro 5370
The Vostro line of DELL laptops does not include many modifications, but you can still find the right one. The striking difference of this series of modifications from the previous budget pair is its compact size, thinness and lightness.
For the most part, the laptop fits into the conventional classification “ultrabook”, but the manufacturer does not particularly emphasize this circumstance. The size of the screen here is 13.3 “, the detailing of the TN-matrix is offered in a non-alternative version – 1920×1080. The overall dimensions of the laptop are 323.9×219.9×17.55 mm, the net weight is 1.41 kg. The body colors are silver, gray, blue, black. The body is metal.
The processor configuration is single-variant – Core i5 on 4 Kaby Lake-R 1600 MHz cores. The factory configurations for RAM are 4-8 GB DDR4 1.6 GHz with an upgradeable resource up to 32 GB on two slots.
In terms of video cards, the situation is comparable to the previous solution: if you choose a modification with a discrete module, then you will get an AMD Radeon 530 with memory up to 8 GB; with built-in, the situation is a little different – there are two options – INTEL HD (or UHD) Graphics 620.
For hard drives, the range of choices is quite limited – either HDD or SSD up to 256 GB. There is no optical drive. External memory cards are supported, but only in microSD format.
In terms of communications, the choice is small: two wireless modules – Wi-Fi 802.11a and Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.1 Type-C, HDMI and an ordinary combined headset connector.
- metal case;
- thin and lightweight;
- optimal performance;
- Type-C rechargeable;
- good autonomy.
- TN-matrix (in this context it is considered a disadvantage);
- additional hard drive cannot be delivered.
DELL INSPIRON 7577
Further in this rating group, we will consider a notebook of the INSPIRON line, which differs sharply from the previous type of matrix. In this case, it is IPS with all its advantages in terms of adequate color reproduction, large viewing angles and more. This circumstance, of course, influenced the price of the device, but it is not the only one.
So, the resolution of the 'fashionable' IPS-matrix in this laptop is 1920×1080 with a screen diagonal of 15 inches. The dimensions of the laptop itself are 389×274.7×24.95 mm. The weight without packaging is quite impressive – as much as 2.65 kg, but then it will become clear that 'this is not a bug, this is a feature'. The case of the laptop is metal, the options for the dominant colors are red or black.
The processor base of the laptop is initially quite powerful – there is a choice of Core i5 or i7 from Intel on 4 Kaby Lake-H cores with a frequency of 2.5 or 2.8 GHz, respectively. With RAM in the original configuration, things are also better than the previous model – 8 or 16 GB DDR4 2400 MHz and upgrade potential up to 32 GB. The video subsystem is definitely pleasing – the most popular and affordable modifications include, in different versions, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 / 1050Ti / 1060 with 4-8 GB memory.
Finally, the selection options for hard drives include all possible combinations of types (SSD, HDD or tandem) with capacities up to 1TB for HDD and up to 256 for SSD. No DVD drive, support for SD cards.
Here is a small remark. We mentioned above that the laptop is quite massive, and now it becomes clear why exactly. Even the basic configuration brings the device very close to the class of gaming laptops, which implies high-quality and volumetric cooling, which takes up decent space in the case. Actually, this laptop is positioned by the manufacturer as a gaming laptop, although it does not particularly try to compete with the 'monsters' of the market.
A few more words about communications. Of the contactless modules, there are practically mandatory 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2. All the rest are a network card, 3 full USB 3.1, USB Type C, HDMI, Thunderbolt 3.
- powerful processor and video card;
- high-quality assembly;
- pleasant keyboard backlighting;
- high-quality and quiet cooling;
- battery parameters are more modest by a quarter in comparison with the predecessor 7567 of the same series.
DELL LATITUDE 5590
Completing the DELL rating group of optimal laptops is the remarkable model of the LATITUDE series. The company is no longer positioning this laptop as a gaming laptop, but its characteristics are more than decent, and it is not too far behind the previous model.
The screen size in this case is 15.6 inches, the display is equipped with a 1920×1080 IPS matrix. Let's be honest, although the matrix is IPS-type, the benchmarks of Western reviewers show not the most 'top' results. The body is made of high-quality plastic, there is only one color option – black. The keyboard unit is backlit by LED sources. The dimensions of the device are 376×250.65×20.6 mm, the net weight is 1.6 kg.
The processor base of the laptop is Core i5 or i7. The 'speed' of the cores is from 1.6 to 2.6 GHz. The factory assembly implies 8-16 GB of DDR4 2.133 GHz RAM, and the technical capabilities of the platform imply the possibility of upgrading to 32 GB (there are 2 separate slots on the motherboard for this). The possibilities of choosing a video module imply the option of almost completely abandoning any significant video games – for this you can be content with the system integrated into the processor, or a slightly better way – a discrete NVIDIA GeForce MX130 with 2 GB on board.
With hard drives, the situation is ambiguous. On the one hand, the overall preference for SSDs is good and progressive. On the other hand, the maximum storage capacity of 256 or 512 GB is objectively small for many as of 2018. There is no DVD drive, support for external SD memory is available.
Communication capabilities of the laptop include standard 'must have' interfaces and modules like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, network card, USB of different generations. In addition to everything, there are also VGA (D-Sub), HDMI, DisplayPort outputs
- very powerful hardware with selection options to minimize cost;
- thin enough;
- decent battery life.
- 50% of the sRGB range as tested by foreign teams.
The best Dell gaming laptops
Now on to a short but one of the highlights in the survey of Dell's best laptops. Here we look at two models of full-fledged gaming laptops. One of them is the famous 'ideological' brand Alienware, which was previously owned by a small but independent company created by enthusiastic gamers, and later moved under Dell's wing, retaining its principles, ideology and paraphernalia.
Let's start with the brainchild of Alienware and say right away that the nomenclature already clearly reflects an important indicator – the size of the screen. This gaming device has an outstanding 17.3 inches. Its dimensions are 413.5x299x48.4 mm, and its weight is 48.4 4.15 kg. Made in a rather recognizable Alienware design with characteristic attributes. Next, let's go through the rest of the important characteristics.
In this case, the manufacturer decided not to spray too much with the type of processor – the choice is limited only by the number of cores – 4 or 6, and there is only one belonging to the family – Core i7 from almost unchanged (for good laptops) Intel, cores – Haswell. The laptop is equipped with RAM almost to the eyeballs – 16 or 32 GB DDR3L. There are four slots for memory strips, but the system expansion limit is 32 GB, which may well coincide with the standard configuration. You can choose from 2 options for dedicated video cards, thereby affecting the final cost of the machine – GeForce GTX 1070 or 880M with 6-8 GB of video memory.
With data storages, installation options are acceptable – either a single SSD up to 512 GB, or an additional mechanical spinning disk up to 1 GB. That is, only tandem is possible. The plus is that the modification with HDD implies its 'fast' version, with a rotation of 7400 rpm.
The Wi-Fi module in this case corresponds to the capabilities of the 802.11b standard. Another wireless module – Bluetooth 4.0. Contact connections: Gigabit network card, USB 3.0 Type A interfaces (4 pieces), HDMI-jack, Mini DisplayPort, separate input / output for external speakers / headphones or microphone.
- Built-in sound is unexpectedly loud, clear and realistic;
- support for popular keyboard effects in games;
- high network speed;
- built-in FullHD camera with high FPS.
- the matrix is not IPS.
Dell G5 15 5587
Now let's see what the second and last model in this list of ratings is. A noticeable difference is in two important areas: the laptop is smaller in screen size, and significantly cheaper in price.
So, the size of the screen in this case runs along the lower edge of the standard suitable for gaming laptops – 15.6 inches. Matrix type is better than 'average' – IPS, detail is not more than FullHD 1920 × 1080. The dimensions of the laptop are 389×274.7×24.95 mm, and the weight is surprising in its comparative modesty, as for a gaming configuration – 2.61 kg. Designer executions according to the basic shade of the metal body – white, red, black.
With the selection of the processor base, it is already possible to 'roam' a little wider than in the previous version, but not too much – i5 or i7 with a frequency of 2.2-2.3 GHz, cores – Coffee Lake 4-6 pieces. “State” installation of RAM – 8 or 16 GB of high-performance and fast DDR 2666 MHz. The hardware upgrade limit is 32 GB. With video cards, the situation is quite encouraging – the manufacturer offers a choice of GeForce 1050 / Ti or 1060 with pre-installed video memory up to 16 GB.
A full range of combinations is available with data storages – from a single 256 GB SSD to a tandem of solid state drive and 'mechanics' up to 1256 GB of total capacity. The DVD is not included by the designers in any form, the SD slot is working.
The peripheral features of the laptop include standard wireless, a 1 Gb LAN card, a set of USB ports of different specifications, HDMI, Thunderbolt 3.
- IPS matrix;
- thin enough for a gaming model; auto
- two-level blue and white illumination;
- well-optimized and selected hardware;
- relatively affordable cost.
- headphone jack – on the right (inconvenient for right-handers, of which most are).
Best Dell Ultrabooks
The next pair of devices in our rating-review are thin and light notebook computers from Dell, for which the common term 'ultrabook' has settled down. Most of these laptops, by definition, do not contain optical drives, often (not always) have a small screen size and a stripped-down keyboard (without a digital block) and often get quite hot. But for a number of purposes and tasks, not to mention personal preferences, ultrabooks have been and will be relevant and in demand.
DELL LATITUDE 7370
The first issue will deal with the characteristics of a laptop from the LATITUDE line. Its expressive feature is that in the maximum configuration with the matrix, the resolution only slightly falls short of 4K, and in all other respects the characteristics cannot be said to be particularly outstanding, but quite acceptable.
The aforementioned matrix detailing is implemented in two versions: FullHD 1920×1080 and extended – 3200×1800. Screen dimension – 13.3 “, matte coating. Matrix type – IPS. Ultrabook dimensions – 304.8×210.5×14.32 mm, weight with metal body – 1.12 kg. Body color profiles – silver and black.
A choice of two processor configuration options – based on 2-core mobile Core M5 or M7 chips with a frequency of 1.1-1.2 GHz, respectively. RAM memory – 4 to 16 GB LPDDR3. Video subsystem – only integral from the central chip – Intel HD Graphics 515 or Intel GMA HD. The choice of hard drives is limited only by SSD solutions with a capacity of 256 or 512 GB. Removable microSD memory is supported.
The set of peripheral interfaces, as for an ultrabook, is expected to be far from redundant, but quite sufficient: wireless Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB 3.0 Type A, micro HDMI output, two Thunderbolt 3 connectors, Combo connection to the headset. The only thing that many clearly lack is a network card with a standard wired twisted-pair interface.
- IPS matrix;
- resolution 'almost 4K' as an option;
- thin monitor frame;
- modifications with a 4G module are available;
- metal case.
- no network card.
DELL XPS 12 9250
And the second model in a short selection of the rating of the most notable DELL ultrabooks is already significantly more affordable in terms of cost, only slightly inferior to the previous model in some characteristics and significantly surpassing it in others.
Immediately it is necessary to mention an important point regarding the ultrabook form factor. This is a laptop tablet. It has such an important property of a transformer as the separability of the screen and keyboard, but at the same time it can be considered a fully transformer only with a big stretch for a number of reasons.
The screen diagonal of this laptop is very modest – 12.5 “, and here it comes close to the definition of 'netbook', remaining in the category of full-fledged notebooks only thanks to the electronic 'stuffing'. But the screen resolution is really outstanding – 1920х1080 or 3840х2160 (4K) to choose from. the surface of the screen is glossy, touch-sensitive with multitouch support.
Equipped with a laptop processor – two options from mobile m5 or m7 with a frequency of 1.1-1.2 GHz. The standard RAM is decent in volume – 8 GB, but modest in specification – DDR3 with a frequency of 1.6 GHz. The configuration of video subsystems is completely similar to the previous ultrabook, see above. With hard drives, in this case, the manufacturer went down a little more – there are two options from SSD – 128 and 256 GB. There is a slot for removable memory for ExpressCard.
In terms of interfaces, this device is nevertheless closer to the tablet – there are 'mandatory' Wi-Fi b Bluetooth, without which nowhere, and from wired connections – only Thunderbolt 3 in the amount of two pieces and a standard combo output for headset.
- separability of the screen and keyboard;
- touch screen;
- 4K screen resolution (optional);
- metal case;
- camera 5 megapixels.
- questionable justification of the form factor at the expense of performance.
Dell's best convertible laptop
And at the end of the rating of the best DELL laptop computers according to the editorial board and industry experts, we will consider a full-fledged convertible laptop manufactured by this American company.
DELL INSPIRON 5378
This elegant transformer with a well-assembled body has a 13.3 “screen with a high-quality IPS-matrix in two maximum resolutions – 1366×768 and 1920×1080. The screen is glossy, naturally touch-sensitive with multitouch. Its dimensions are 324.8×224.4×20.4 mm, and the device weighs 1.71 kg Only one shade – metallic.
Unlike the two ultrabooks described above, this solution is equipped with a more powerful processor base – Intel Core i3 or i5 to choose from based on two Kaby Lake cores with a frequency of 2.4-2.5 GHz. The standard laptop RAM is a high-performance DDR4 2400 MHz in a volume of 4 or 8 GB, which can be upgraded to a maximum of 16 GB. As for the video subsystem, everything is expected here: only the built-in internal processor card Intel HD Graphics 520/610/620. Contrary to the expectations of many, the transformer can be equipped with both an SSD and a 'mechanic' with a capacity of up to 1 TB.
This laptop has the following communications: wireless modules Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11ac generation; wired connections USB 3.0 Type A in the amount of three pieces, HDMI and combo-out to headset / external speakers / microphone.
- high-quality matrix with a 'juicy' picture;
- strong, non-marking body;
- good processor base;
- dual-mode keyboard backlight.
- poor lateral placement of the Power button.
