How to wear men's shorts
First of all, let's clarify when shorts are appropriate and when it's best not to wear them. If it's hot outside, heading to the beach, to a game or workout, a walk to the park or a completely informal meeting, then shorts are definitely the best choice. However, if you are expected at an official event, business meeting or you have to visit certain places (temple, theater, restaurant, business office center, etc.), then it is better to refrain from shorts, choose summer pants made of lightweight fabric.
When going on vacation abroad, consider the fact that most restaurants have a dress code for attending dinner, where it is strictly forbidden for men to wear shorts.
Now for the length. You can argue for a long time on this topic, but there is a certain rule that it is better to adhere to so as not to look ridiculous. The shorts should be no shorter than 5 cm to the knee and no longer than 5 cm from the knee. Of course, if you are a man who chooses for himself the image of his girlfriend, 'I reveal my charms as much as possible', then this information is not for you. Short men's shorts that reveal most of the legs can only be swimming trunks.
There is one exception to this rule – sports shorts that you wear for sports. Athletic form should serve its function – to allow you to move freely without restricting movement. It is not ethical to appear in a public place in a tracksuit.
Fit men shorts
Choose shorts with a tight fit, which looks better than hanging shorts. Visually, shorts add volume to the hips, and if you do not want to look like a 'chicken leg', then give up baggy and voluminous models, avoid folds on the shorts.

Solid colors such as brown, beige, khaki, white, navy blue, olive and cream are the most traditional style for men's shorts and will be easy to match with the rest of the garment. Shorts styles for men
- Chino shorts are the most versatile shorts in your wardrobe. They are easy to pair with any T-shirt and sneakers. At the same time, wearing a shirt, chino shorts and moccasins, you get a wonderful look in a smart casual style.
- Denim shorts. The main part of the men's wardrobe, today, consists of jeans. The material is deeply loved by many designers and now almost everything is allowed for jeans: any combination in any style. Despite this, denim is not the most comfortable choice for hot weather, the dense cotton weave will not give you comfortable sun exposure. However, it will be a strong competition for chino shorts on a cooler evening or on the eve of autumn.
- Sports shorts are all kinds of uniforms for sports (football, volleyball, basketball, etc.). It all depends on your taste and the choice of your team.
- Plaid shorts (also called plaids), especially with a white base, are one of the main types of shorts. Perfect when paired with a polo shirt.
- Bright patterned shorts that look like Hawaiian shirts for your legs. Save them for visiting the beach. The main rule is to combine this style with simple neutral tones of the outer part of the garment. Don't overload.
- Seersucker shorts (lightweight crinkled fabric with stripes). Made of lightweight and thin cotton fabric, usually striped, hence the name. Choosing this type of shorts, you will demonstrate to people that you are a person who looks not only stylish, but also for the purpose of a comfortable stay in the heat.
- Men's military shorts are camouflage-colored shorts used by the military and law enforcement. Camouflage shorts have a direct purpose – camouflage, to become invisible against the background of the environment, if you are in nature, of course. When you are in a cityscape, you are more likely to stand out. We have nothing against the military style, if you actively support it with accessories and appropriate footwear. It is quite the place to be.
- Bermuda shorts are the civilian version of the traditional military uniform from the Pacific Islands and are almost always khaki or white cotton. In the same place, they are an acceptable option for a business suit, where the shorts are made from the same fabric as the business jacket.
There are men who do not like to wear shorts, because they are sure that they do not suit them. Most likely you have chosen the wrong style, exactly the one that does not suit you. What to Avoid in Men's Shorts
- Shorts too bright and too short. This style will draw a lot of attention to your crotch area, and this is not a gentleman's place where that much attention should be.
- Men's beach shorts or men's swimming shorts. Use them for their intended purpose: on the beach or in a pond.
- Loader shorts or 'safari' with side, front and back pockets are shorts for specific jobs, activities and hobbies. Do not wear overalls in public places. Believe me, shorts with sewn-on pockets stuffed with all sorts of things are far from stylish.
- Men's denim breeches or men's capri pants. First, these are not shorts. In men's breeches, there is no functionality in saving from the heat, because they are long. And thirdly, the length of the capri ends at the level of the calves, which visually greatly shortens the legs, and the man looks at least strange in them.

What to wear with men's shorts
Shorts are great for smart casual style. Choose a polo shirt, a fitted shirt, a jersey, a slim-fit tee, or a jacket. Based on your taste and personal style, you can choose from a simple cut to a more formal shorts complete with a blazer. If the shirt has long sleeves, tuck them up for a more sophisticated look.
Materials for men's shorts
- Cotton. It is lightweight and breathable, low maintenance, easy to wash and long lasting. However, the dense weave inherent in this material poorly removes heated air, quickly absorbs moisture, and evaporates slowly.
- Madras. This is a kind of Indian cotton fabric, perfect for the hot season. It is a lightweight material that is highly breathable. Usually has a checkered pattern.
- Searsaker is a crinkled cotton fabric, as it is also from India, it is incredibly lightweight and great for summer. The uneven tension of the threads gives a distinctive uneven structure of the fabric – stripes of crinkled fabric alternate with a smoother texture. That is why the characteristic pattern is striped, less often monochromatic or in a gingham cage.
- Linen. Linen trousers are more common than linen shorts, however if you find a pair you will be rewarded with comfort and lightness. Linen wrinkles a lot, much stronger than cotton, however, linen's distinctive folds are part of the style. Don't try to smooth them out.
- Fine wool. The material is more common for summer trousers. By its properties, wool gives the product a smoother drapery, which is lost when applied to shorts. Therefore, there is no rational reason to choose shorts from this material.
- Synthetics. All sports shorts are usually made of synthetics (nylon, spandex). And this is not easy, since the structure of the fabric allows you to actively move and feel comfortable. The material wicks away sweat, moisture evaporates quickly and is not absorbed, unlike the same cotton.
What shoes to choose for men's shorts
Socks and sandals are appropriate only for old German men on vacation, otherwise – never! Shorts look best with a closed toe shoe. For your socks not to look like knee-highs on your feet, use men's 'invisible' socks. Yes, they have existed in our stores for a long time. So, if you choose open shoes combined with shorts, flip flops or sandals, then take care of the absence of socks on your feet.
