Ratings of auto and moto goods

Review of the best according to the editorial board. On the selection criteria. This material is subjective and does not constitute advertising and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before buying, you need to consult with a specialist.

Motorcycles are an alternative type of vehicle, characterized by increased maneuverability, small dimensions (relative to cars), good power parameters in terms of their own curb weight. Despite the fact that in Russia, motor transport is not as well developed as, say, in the USA or Japan, they love it, they talk about it, and from time to time on the streets of large cities you can find road bikes, enduros and even famous choppers that came out of legends straight from the last century .

Due to the abundance of manufacturers and models of bikes on the modern market, the online magazine offers you a rating of the best motorcycles in six categories, selected on the basis of double evaluation by experts and consumers.

How to choose a motorcycle

how to choose a motorcycle

The choice of a motorcycle from a visual design point of view largely depends on the preferences of the consumer and the purpose for which it is purchased. However, in a general technical sense, there is a set of standard characteristics and aspects that need to be known and taken into account. Therefore, when choosing a motorcycle on your own, the magazine recommends taking into account the following parameters:

Engine power. One of the main indicators of any vehicle, affecting both the characteristics of the movement and its cost. The power of the engine determines how quickly the motorcycle will pick up speed (accelerate), how high its maximum speed, as well as the predisposition to driving through sections with a difference in altitude. Now about the recommendations:

  1. If you are riding on rough terrain or sand, then motorcycles with 6-20 hp motors are a good choice. with., possessing sufficient maneuverability and not demanding in terms of the budget;

  2. Prioritized commuting to work within the city? Pay attention to models with a capacity of 10-20 liters. with., maneuverable in the flow and economical in the content;

  3. For fast and agile city trips when time is of the essence, opt for 20-45 hp motorcycles. from.;

  4. As a transport for traveling long distances, which requires a combination of speed, maneuverability and reliability, motors with a power of 50-95 hp are chosen;

  5. Fans of superbikes and high speeds should pay attention to the lineup from 100 hp. and higher.

Engine capacity. An equally important aspect that affects the power, the accompanying acceleration characteristics and fuel consumption. In this case, we can give the following recommendations:

  1. when driving quietly on city roads with a volume of 100-150 cubic meters. cm will be enough;

  2. for the possibility of going off-road (fishing, hunting, camping), depending on the 'neglect' of the area, the engine volume indicator can vary within 150-250 cubic meters. cm;

  3. If the prospect of using a motorcycle pushes you for a vigorous ride with decent acceleration, as well as maneuvering in heavy traffic, we recommend choosing models with an indicator between 250 and 350 cc. cm;

  4. in all other cases, when in the first place – travel on the autobahns, highways and good intercity roads, as well as professional performances on decent racing series, you should pay attention to motorcycles from 400 cc. cm.

Speed indicators. Focusing on this parameter is important if the travel time (that is, mobility) plays an important role for you. Here, as in the previous paragraphs, all motorcycles can be divided into several categories:

  1. low-power, economical and measured in terms of speed models, characterized by low fuel consumption at the expense of agility. The limit of such motorcycles is considered to be 90-100 km / h, and the average is 60 km / h;

  2. motorcycles for driving on public roads connecting settlements with each other. A typical picture for Russia and, as a result, the most popular segment for buyers. The maximum speed of these motorcycles can reach 150-180 km / h, which is a very good result;

  3. Autobahn conquerors, very powerful and fuel-hungry bikes designed for Autobahn trips. The capabilities of such specimens go far beyond 250 km / h, which allows owners to save time when traveling.

Engine's type. Currently, electric motors are being actively integrated into the design of motorcycles, however, the stability of their operation, as well as the consumption of charge, leaves much to be desired and is not acceptable for operating conditions in Russia. Largely because of this, the only engine options are still two-stroke and four-stroke.

  1. two-stroke engines are distinguished by a more primitive design, ease of maintenance and repair, but they can in no way be inferior in power to some categories of four-stroke engines. They are a kind of 'workhorses', which are not shameful to use for ancillary affairs, travel short distances around the city, as well as for fishing or hunting.

  2. four-stroke engines are structurally complex, but they have more stable traction indicators, can offer users a larger internal volume and an overall increase in technical characteristics. Motorcycles with such engines will be ideal for both short-term city runs and long journeys over long distances.

Cooling. Another important characteristic of the engine is the type of cooling. According to the canons of technical achievements, it can be airy and oily. The first is suitable for low-power motorcycles, the operation of which is limited to short trips. In such a short time, engine components do not have time to heat up to critical levels. In the case of more powerful power units, oil cooling is used, based on the circulation of fluid in a closed system. In this case, the excess heat is actively removed by the oil, which simultaneously performs the lubricating function.

Gearbox (transmission). Tips on this parameter will be for informational purposes, with a reference to emotions from use.

  1. manual transmission is an option for drive enthusiasts who are used to getting maximum responsiveness from technology. This version of the design allows you to make sharp jerks from the start and make quick accelerations, but requires timely gear changes in order to prevent overheating of the power plant. Mechanics are economical, durable, and much cheaper to repair than automatic transmissions or variators.

  2. automatic transmission is a 'light' option for people who prefer practicality and ease of control. There is no need to be distracted by gear shifting: the gearbox controls the revs by increasing or decreasing them in automatic mode. Ideal when frequent travel is required, however, due to the introduction of an aggregate repair system, it is more expensive to maintain and wasteful in terms of fuel consumption.

Weight of the motorcycle. Many users do not pay due attention to this characteristic, making this or that choice on an intuitive level. In general, the degree of vehicle stability on the road, as well as maneuverability and controllability, depends on the mass.

  1. if you want to buy a bike for off-road track riding and performing tricks, then it makes sense to take a closer look at lightweight models, the weight of which does not exceed 50-70 kg;

  2. for city maneuvering, there is no need to take a motorcycle that is too light, as its stability in the stream will be unstable. The best option here would be a choice in the range of 90-120 kg, which is convenient to fill on its side, and it is not difficult to stabilize it during demolition.

  3. on long journeys at high speeds, the required minimum weight will be 200 kg. With these indicators, the minimum required downforce is achieved, ensuring the stability of the bike on the track.

Suspension type. The aspect responsible for the comfort of travel on various road terrain. The following types of suspensions are distinguished according to the standard classification:

  1. Spring Strut – Attaches to the rear of the frame for high rigidity. It behaves very badly on rough roads, which is why it does not accept off-road driving (or 'killed' domestic directions). But it will be an excellent option for driving on smooth routes with minimal coating defects.

  2. monoshock – a pendulum-type element fixed to the rear of the frame in a position close to horizontal. Effectively dampens longitudinal vibrations due to a large compression amplitude, making it perfect for jumping, driving on rough terrain and in small cities with an abundance of unpaved roads.

  3. telescopic vibration damper – the working cylinders of this type of suspension are located on the front fork, compensating for unevenness in the road surface by compressing or stretching in the appropriate direction. It has a large power reserve, and therefore is a universal solution for driving on city roads as well as for traveling off-road.

Kawasaki Ninja H2R

Rating: 4.9

Kawasaki Ninja H2R

More than three years later, experts have finally been able to interpret the morals of this sport bike, which left a mixed impression when it debuted on the global market in 2015. In fact, its strongest features were the immensely classy combination of aggressive looks, power and design parameters that allowed the model to accelerate to over 350 kilometers per hour. Actually, the four-cylinder in-line engine, the volume of which is 998 cubic centimeters, is responsible for ensuring such results. Accordingly, the torque on the shaft reaches 165 Nm, while the power is an impressive 310 horsepower.

A set of suspensions of two types is responsible for the dynamics of movements in the Kawasaki Ninja H2R: a telescopic fork with a travel of 120 millimeters in front, and a swingarm with a mono-shock absorber and a travel of 135 millimeters at the rear. Actually, from this fact it already becomes clear that the bike is intended exclusively for driving on flat tracks. And, more precisely, for tracks, since rapid acceleration takes only a couple of seconds, and it is very difficult to move in such a mode even on the autobahns.

Advantages

  • perfectly adjusted down forces and selected weight of the structure, which positively affect handling;
  • an abundance of technological innovations;
  • high limit of maximum speed;
  • very catchy appearance;
  • power of 310 horsepower.

disadvantages

  • extremely high cost (from 4 million rubles).

Ducati Panigale V4 RED

Rating: 4.9

Ducati Panigale V4 RED

Undoubtedly, an icon of the Italian motorcycle industry, which simply could not pass by the rating of the best sports bikes on the planet. The Ducati Panigale V4 RED is a very capricious and showy looking bike with 214 horsepower. This figure, coupled with 124 Nm of torque, is provided by a V-shaped four-cylinder engine with a volume of 1214 cubic centimeters. An electronic injector control system is responsible for the accuracy in terms of fuel injection into the combustion chambers, the setting of which allows you to add a few more horses to the output power.

The main feature of the Ducati Panigale V4 RED is its lightweight body construction using a completely new aluminum alloy frame. It provides excellent downforce as well as lightening the bike, which ultimately results in a noticeable improvement in handling, especially in curve entry criteria. Needless to say that this motorcycle is exclusively a track bike, and it is at least unreasonable to ride it into the city? Very expensive to maintain, it costs almost the same money as a good Korean crossover, while giving much more emotion, drive and adrenaline. This is a great purchase option for those who want a very playful 'toy' for occasional runs on the track.

Advantages

  • high power and torque;
  • relatively acceptable cost;
  • a lightweight motorcycle design for better handling;
  • enchanting design, in the spirit of Ducati;
  • the possibility of fine-tuning and increasing technical characteristics by adjusting the operation of electrical circuits.

disadvantages

  • not found.

Yamaha Y ZF – R1M

Rating: 4.8

Yamaha Y ZF - R1M

A kind of style icon among sport bikes from the 2000s, the overall contribution to the segment is hard to overestimate. The Japanese from the legendary corporation almost completely redesigned the appearance of the Yamaha Y ZF – R1M (sample of 2012), making it as unlike the older motorcycles of the series as possible. Like most of its competitors at the time, the bike received a 998cc four-cylinder engine capable of delivering up to 182 horsepower at 115 Nm of torque. Considering the light weight of the constructive solution (only 170 kilograms), the pilot can easily accelerate to 300 kilometers per hour, without experiencing any discomfort due to the smooth gear shifting.

However, such subtleties had little effect on the overall ergonomics. Yamaha Y ZF track sharpening – R1M is felt in everything, right down to the stiff suspension, which makes you feel literally every bump in the road. As for the features, the high seating position, which is atypical for products of this segment, stands out from the whole structure of the bike. With this configuration, the driver has additional control over maneuvers in order to accurately navigate curves and set the trajectory. This is a very good sports bike and has earned a high place in the ranking of the best.

Advantages

  • bold appearance;
  • high seating position, which increases the handling of the bike;
  • the ability to accelerate up to 300 kilometers per hour;
  • low, relative to competitors, price.

disadvantages

  • very rigid suspension.

Aprilia RSV4 RF

Rating: 4.8

Aprilia RSV4 RF

An Italian superbike grandee designed with serious claims to be the leader in the sport track category. Aprilia RSV4 RF is one of the few contenders, the appearance of which, along with painting, was initially sharpened for performances on the track, since everything is designed according to the canons of the elite series (with the exception of sponsor logos). From a purely technical point of view, the bike is well ahead of its rival Yamaha Y ZF – R1M, delivering all 200 horsepower for the same engine displacement (999.4 cubic centimeters). But the torque remains unchanged: 115 Nm at 10,500 rpm is enough to provide instant acceleration from a standstill.

It is noteworthy that the curb weight of the Aprilia RSV4 RF is 204 kilograms, while the fuel tank is designed to fill 18.5 liters of fuel. The suspension is stiff, with short travels (120 and 130 millimeters front and rear), which ensures no vertical swing losses and good downforce (coupled with a streamlined aluminum body). The only pity is that such a bike is very expensive, which is why it occupies not the highest, but a worthy place in the ranking of the best.

Advantages

  • power equal to 201 horsepower;
  • low weight even in running order;
  • original body paint, tailored for sports;
  • good comfort conditions even with a stiff suspension.

disadvantages

  • high price.

MV Agusta F4 RR RC

Rating: 4.7

MV Agusta F4 RR RC

An enchanting version of the 2017 track superbike, made at the world famous Varese factory. The main goal of the MV Agusta F4 RR RC was dictated by the need to improve the obsolete motorcycles that took part in the WSBK World Championships. The engineers were faced with the task of creating a motorcycle that would at least not be inferior in technical terms to competitors represented by the same Yamaha, Ducati, Honda and Suzuki, with which, by the way, they coped 100 %. The finished sample received 212 horsepower with an engine volume of 1000 cubic meters.

As for other characteristics, the largest number of MV Agusta F4 RR RC triggers is observed in the plane of feelings and sensations. The vast majority of motorcycle enthusiasts admit that this model is the most beautiful at this stage in the development of the sports motorcycle industry. Streamlined forms, great design, competent painting and a bunch of scattered little things can attract not only photos from a good angle, but also live, which is becoming increasingly rare for ordinary Japanese variations (except, perhaps, Kawasaki Ninja).

Advantages

  • great design, recognized as the benchmark at this stage in the development of the sports bike segment;
  • 212 hp engine with a volume of 1000 cubic meters;
  • spot improvements that made a striking difference between the bike and previous models in the series.

disadvantages

  • high price.

Honda CBR 1000 RR / RA Fireblade

Rating: 4.6

Honda CBR 1000 RR

A typical company representative Honda with recognizable styling features borrowed from previous models in the CBR line. It has a fairly small power reserve (143 forces at 1000 cubic meters of volume), which makes it the most modest representative in the technical part of its kind. Nevertheless, the torque remains at the level of competitors: 114 Nm allow for a sharp start with a quick acceleration. However, all these nuances are compensated for by the very low weight of the motorcycle – in curb condition it weighs only 196 kilograms, thanks to which it responds very briskly to the 'offer' to accelerate at the cutoff.

If we disregard the technical parameters, then the attention is entirely focused on the constructive moments. Namely, on structural parts that are quite massive in appearance, such as an exhaust pipe. The second important nuance concerns the noticeable both in landing and visually the seat and rear wing lift. This looks very stylish and in the spirit of the company Honda, but it also affects the comfort and handling of the motorcycle when entering curves. At the same time, the travel of the rear lever fork with a gas shock absorber is 138.2 mm, which is slightly higher than that of competitors in the category. Overall Honda the CBR 1000 RR / RA Fireblade is a very solid bike with a simple and straightforward 'character', the cost of which is quite in line with the technical side of the estimate.

Advantages

  • appearance in the spirit of the company Honda;
  • lightweight design, capable of unleashing the potential of a low-power model;
  • very reliable components and assemblies;
  • comfortable fit and improved handling.

disadvantages

  • low engine power (143 hp) with a large volume (1000 cubic centimeters).

Suzuki GSX-R 1000

Rating: 4.5

Suzuki GSX-R 1000

The motobike, which was launched in 2012, became the most anticipated project of that season. The main heap of hopes was pinned on a lot of external changes, hotly expected by the fans of the Japanese grandee Suzuki. But, to the great regret of the crowd, the miracle did not happen: prudent manufacturers focused on modernizing the mechanical (or, in a general sense, power) part. The pistons of the four-cylinder engine were replaced with new ones, lighter (by almost 11%), but with the same working resource. The volume of the engine, in general, remained unchanged – 999 cubic centimeters gave 182 horsepower and 117 Nm of torque. Compared to the leader of the rating, Kawasaki Ninja H2R – indicators are extremely ineffective.

However, the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 heralded that rare type of sport bike to be found on and off the track. Good dynamic qualities allow those few people from the people to travel without problems along flat streets without serious defects in the roadway. In fairness, it should be noted that this model has made a serious contribution to the further development of sportbikes Suzuki, representing the first iteration of the creation of a real track 'monster'.

Advantages

  • a number of pinpoint improvements to the chassis and mechanical parts of the bike;
  • the ability to use as a motorcycle for movement on highways and highways;
  • good handling;
  • relatively low cost;
  • high degree of reliability of the constituent elements.

disadvantages

  • low speed indicators with a solid engine displacement and, accordingly, low efficiency.

Best Touring Motorcycles

BMW K 1600 GTL

Rating: 4.9

BMW K 1600 GTL

BMW K 1600 GTL is objectively the best motorcycle for touring travel, presented in this ranking both in terms of technical indicators and other aspects of assessment. The model successfully combines not the largest curb weight (360 kilograms) and a six-cylinder engine that works to its limits (but retains its resource for a long time). With 1649 cubic centimeters of volume, its power is 160 horsepower, and torque reaches 175 Nm at 5250 shaft revolutions per minute.

Due to its belonging to a large automobile (and nominally this is so) concern, the K 1600 GTL enlisted the support of some colossal volume of proprietary technologies, which are not so easy to list on the fly. The most obvious ones are:

  1. three driving modes: Dynamic, Rain and Road;
  2. advanced ABS system (anti-lock brakes);
  3. track control;
  4. dynamic tire pressure monitoring system;
  5. Cruise control;
  6. electronic suspension adjustment.

All this and much more makes the model special within the segment, and even the sky-high price tag in such a situation looks like something self-evident.

Advantages

  • the best set of technical characteristics;
  • original design;
  • a huge supply of working resources – you can feel belonging to a premium German concern;
  • carefully designed ergonomic part;
  • an abundance of technological solutions integrated into motorcycle systems.

disadvantages

  • not found.

Honda Gold Wing (GL1800 AirBag + Navi)

Rating: 4.9

Honda Gold Wing (GL1800 AirBag + Navi)

A classic tourer from a Japanese company Honda, which got into the rating thanks to its constant adherence to traditions and constant updating of the lineup. The GL1800 represents the pinnacle of the Gold Wing family, crowning it with a sophisticated and unchanged seating system with well-matched lumbar support, chic design in all aspects, and some crazy torque figures along with all the technical features.

The power of the engine with a volume of 1832 cubic meters is 118 horsepower, which allows the 421-kilogram colossus to accelerate to 200 kilometers per hour. At the same time, it is significant that the torque is 167 Nm, giving the potential for a sharp jerk from the start. In general, looking at the technical part, one often gets the impression that the Gold Wing (GL1800 AirBag + Navi) has the hidden features of a sports bike – at least the corresponding line Honda certainly took place among the ideological inspirers of corporate engineers. One way or another, but this motorcycle turned out to be of very high quality and successful, which naturally reflected in the sales figures. And the price, let's be honest, is completely conducive to making a purchase.

Advantages

  • very high torque (167 Nm);
  • thoughtful comfort elements, in particular, very comfortable back supports for the driver and passenger;
  • good peak speed for a 'heavyweight' – 200 km / h;
  • nice design.

disadvantages

  • not found.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide

Rating: 4.8

Harley-Davidson Street Glide

As always beautiful and as always very dangerous for competitors, the world famous manufacturer of lighters and motorcycles takes an honorable third place in the ranking of the best touring bikes. The Street Glide is a lightweight version of the Harley Davidson Electra Glide range of electric motorcycles, inheriting all the characteristic features of a real Harley, and in terms of technical parameters, it has retained its original appearance. In fact, all the difference between the 'light' and the standard version lies in the relocation to the 'new' old naturally-aspirated TwinCam 103 engine, which has 87 horsepower and 139 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. A very dubious update, which, nevertheless, pushes the model back to the classics even more than the full-fledged Electra system.

The second important change was the rejection of the central wardrobe trunk, because of which the seat also takes on a more classic (and even simpler) look, and the passenger loses additional speakers of the audio system and a solid support under the back. The driver's seat has also undergone a number of simplifications, but they do not in the least affect comfort and do not carry any semantic load at all. Ultimately, Street Glide is seen not so much as a continuation or ideological follower of the series, but as a model designed to raise unnecessary noise and reference the classic canons. This is the same Harley Davidson – a heavy 372-kilogram road warrior, which is worth buying at least to join the legendary brand cult.

Advantages

  • comfortable seating position for both the driver and the passenger;
  • improved handling (and the same minimum headroom);
  • appearance in the spirit of the company Harley Davidson;
  • balanced power characteristics with sufficient torque.

disadvantages

  • essentially a slightly modified 'repeat' of the Electra Glide tourer.

KAWASAKI 1400 GTR

Rating: 4.7

KAWASAKI 1400 GTR

Japanese brand Kawasaki has an almost manic urge to squeeze the top speed out of its own bikes. And the 1400 GTR tourer, quite famous in Russia, has become another confirmation of this phenomenon. Its weight (279 kilograms) cannot be compared with the Indian roadmaster , however, positive trends in the efficient use of the engine resource are obvious even with such unequal indicators. The fact is that with a volume of 1352 cubic meters, the power of the four-cylinder engine is 155 horsepower, consistent with 136 Nm of torque. Therefore, the model, intended for conquering long distances, is quite capable of accelerating to 300 kilometers per hour, briskly picking up speed straight from the start.

Needless to say: outwardly, the KAWASAKI 1400 GTR is a slightly 'fat' sports bike with an aggressive character, which adds comfort and does not lose any of its charge. Obviously, of all the contenders in this category, it least of all resembles a traditional roadster (or a tourer, whatever you like), but is able to give a lot of positive emotions from an unusual combination of sport and moderate road superiority.

Advantages

  • excellent characteristics of power and torque to engine displacement;
  • a truly sporty 'charge' stamped on the technical parameters of the bike;
  • Improved comfort with redesigned chassis and seat fit
  • Stylish appearance inspired by Kawasaki superbikes.

disadvantages

  • is not a 'clean' road bike.

Indian roadmaster

Rating: 4.7

Indian roadmaster

One of the flagship “chariots” of a little-known Russian manufacturer Indian, capable of impressing the audience of motorists with its authentic appearance and characteristics along with original solutions, and even an exorbitantly high price. Despite the real massiveness and weight, the Roadmaster is a very comfortable and manageable bike, the weight of which, with and without equipment, is 630 and 421 kilograms, respectively. It is no wonder that with an engine capacity of 1811 cubic centimeters, the power is only 74 horsepower – in real sense, speed is completely absent here. Nevertheless, when driving on highways, the drive and tranquility from the management creates some wild quintessence of the feeling that there is agility in this 'hardware', and quite big.

Technological solutions in terms of appearance and ergonomics in the Indian Roadmaster are also not so simple. The bike is clearly trying to resemble models from 40 or 50 years ago, which is achieved through the use of the same materials of construction as half a century ago. The dashboard (with the exception of the electronic window of readings from the on-board sensors), and with it all the organizers are imbued with the spirit of antiquity. So much so that, getting behind the wheel, you literally feel the spirit of the old era. And the only reminder of life at the beginning of the 21st century is the engine start button, placed on a trigger with a different set of buttons.

Advantages

  • stunning appearance, taken out of the context of half a century ago;
  • control buttons (autostart, alarm, etc.) are placed on the steering wheel;
  • comfort due to a comfortable fit and chassis design;
  • extremely reliable system as well as high-quality selection of materials.

disadvantages

  • very heavy motorcycle (630 kilograms in running order);
  • high price (over 3 million rubles);
  • 'gluttonous' 74-horsepower engine.

The best sports and touring motorcycles

Yamaha FJR1300A

Rating: 4.9

Yamaha FJR1300A

This is a pure sports tourer and clearly outperforms the Kawasaki ZZR1400 in terms of belonging. In fact, the Yamaha FJR1300A does not present any revelations, remaining faithful to the classic structure of sports bike touring bikes – it is a charged exterior with slightly enlarged shapes and a modified chassis to improve ride comfort.

As for the technical characteristics of the motorcycle, the first and most important thing to understand: the combination of power (140 horsepower) and torque (136 Nm) gives a very solid gain both in terms of speed and acceleration parameters. According to experts, acceleration to one hundred meters takes no more than 3 seconds, while the maximum speed is limited to 260 kilometers per hour, which is an extremely good result for a tourer. The last thing worth noting (and that directly affects speed performance) is the curb weight. For such a fast bike, it is 290 kilograms, despite the fact that the volume of the fuel tank is 25 liters (and takes on about 40 kilograms of weight when fully refueled).

Advantages

  • continuous improvement of the implemented systems and the integration of new ones;
  • mass, leading to increased controllability and sufficient to provide the required downforce;
  • the possibility of instant acceleration due to high torque;
  • optimal set of technical parameters;
  • sporty design typical of Yamaha products.

disadvantages

  • not found.

Kawasaki ZZR1400

Rating: 4.7

Kawasaki ZZR1400

The ideological successor to the legendary Hayabusa model, the Kawasaki ZZR1400 turned out to be quite extraordinary. The announcement that this bike will be the flagship of the sports touring series was met with bewilderment from both fans of the company's products and interested observers. With an engine displacement of 1400 cubic centimeters, the model produced an impressive 200 horsepower and demonstrated a torque that goes under a hundred already at 2000 rpm. Such indicators allowed the ZZR1400 to accelerate to 320 kilometers per hour (according to the assurances of experts, the maximum recorded speed is even higher), after which a completely reasonable question arose: why is it not a hyperbike?

The answer to the mystery was obvious and lay in the plane of the manufacturer's desire to take an even more dominant position in the market. Thus, what was supposed to be classified as a motorcycle with the prefix 'hyper', in an unexpected way, was formally called a sports tourer. However, consumers cannot be fooled: characteristic aggressive traits, sharpening for maximum opportunities and fast driving cannot be hidden outside the framework of conventions.

Advantages

  • aggressive design, typical for Kawasaki products;
  • peak speed above 320 kilometers per hour;
  • ideological successor of the famous Hayabusa;
  • excellent engine performance.

disadvantages

  • nominally not a tourist motorcycle.

KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

Rating: 4.9

KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

According to numerous descriptions of people, one way or another related to the theme of the motorcycle industry, the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is a typical representative of touring enduro, standing on the border between heavy bikes like the BMW R1200GS Adventure and 'SUVs' like Ducati Multistrada. It does not fit the first in terms of technical parameters, and to the second, in terms of “spirit”, or, if you like, in terms of pronounced off-road qualities.

The Super Adventure S engine 'migrated' here straight from the 1290 Super Duke R (the most famous streetfighter even in Russian motorcycle enthusiasts circles), but it went through a number of minor changes that cut the power down to an annoying 180 horsepower. But it acquired stability in operation at low and medium speeds, which is required from the engine of an avid crossover. For off-road battles, even a separate operating mode was introduced here, called the hackneyed and well-known word 'off-road'. When driving at such settings, the suspension becomes less responsive, the throttle grip loses its responsiveness for the sake of smooth gas supply, and the stabilizers begin to 'understand' that under the wheels is not hard asphalt, but loose (sometimes even very) soil. In general, the bike adapts well to off-road conditions, plays well on the driving experience, and also does not forget to delight buyers with its appearance. Solid five and first place in the ranking.

Advantages

  • pronounced off-road qualities, the presence of driving settings in the 'off-road' mode;
  • nice design;
  • adaptive suspension settings for road conditions;
  • good technical characteristics, reliable engine.

disadvantages

  • not found.

Yamaha YZ450F

Rating: 4.8

Yamaha YZ450F

The very 'jovial' cross-country motorcycle Yamaha YZ450F, the early prototypes of which are legendary not only because of good results at world championships, but also because of getting into custom modifications of the GTA Vice City game, did not reach the leading line a bit. The motorcycle is equipped with a 450 cc engine with a capacity of 53 horsepower, which, with a curb weight of about 110 kilograms, allows you to pick up speed on the straight lines without any problems and respond impeccably to the driver's actions.

Perhaps the most important feature of the Yamaha YZ450F is its suspension system, which has a whopping 310 millimeters of travel. In particular, thanks to it, damping from uneven paths occurs and it is she who allows you to get out of the most difficult sections of off-road terrain. Additional indirect advantages include a reinforced aluminum frame with a double-sided beam, as well as a more thrifty fuel tank with a useful volume of 7.5 liters. Considering the low cost of the motorcycle, both on the secondary market and from official dealers, we get an ideal model with legendary roots and the absolute minimum of any minor flaws.

Advantages

  • increased volume of the fuel tank (compared to competitors);
  • long suspension travel (310 millimeters at the rear and front);
  • optimal technical performance;
  • low price in the secondary market and at dealers;
  • lightweight construction.

disadvantages

  • .not found

Kawasaki KX450F

Rating: 4.7

Kawasaki KX450F

The second Kawasaki in the category, designed to compete in the professional series of motocross competitions in the older series. It weighs 105 kilograms, which, with the declared 54 horsepower, gives a noticeable plus to handling and a good boost both when stalling from the start and in the course of overcoming the distance. True, according to experts, servicing a motorcycle after being purchased by ordinary users 'from the people' requires quite good financial investments, since a single-cylinder engine, working at the limit of its capabilities, provokes an increased loss of resource by individual structural parts.

In addition to the obvious powertrain upgrade, the Kawasaki KX450F has received a good suspension upgrade. Thus, a Showa SFF-Air TAC fork with three pneumatic chambers and separate work of the 'feathers' for compression (22 adjustable positions) and rebound (20 positions) were used as suspension elements on the front wheel. Symmetrically, on the rear wheel, work on the perception of unevenness in the roadway is carried out by a monoshock from the same Showa, which has 4 adjustable positions for fast compression, and another 19 – for slow compression. All the features of the cross bike are not limited to this, especially since the number of technological solutions for each node is simply off scale. However, it will not be possible to tell about all of them within the framework of a brief overview – just know that this motorcycle is one of the best of its kind.

Advantages

  • a motocross bike designed for professional performance;
  • very lightweight design, providing responsive handling of the model;
  • a powerful 450 cc engine providing excellent speed and acceleration performance;
  • as always, chic appearance.

disadvantages

  • there is a rapid wear of engine components and chassis.

Honda CRF 450 R

Rating: 4.7

Honda CRF 450 R

A model of a cross-country motorcycle of 2013, which has undergone many branded modifications during the entire production period. Compared to previous versions of bikes in this category Honda, the CRF 450 R received a point reinforcement of the alloy frame structure, which hardly affected the weight indicators. The dry weight (without fuel in the 6.2-liter tank) was 110.2 kilograms, which had a positive effect both on the ease of control even on difficult terrain, and on ensuring sufficient downforce when passing (albeit rare) straight sections.

As for the engine, unlike the same Kawasaki KX85-I model, an upgrade was carried out with the aim of increasing the working life of individual units. In particular, due to the weighting of the elements (for example, the AGC flywheel, increased with an increase in mass by 11%). In general, in Honda CRF 450 R you can directly feel the focus on increasing quality characteristics for the sake of lower maintenance costs. This is not bad, given that these indicators are important to most consumers (we are not talking about professional athletes). Be that as it may, the bike is still expensive, and the money allegedly 'saved' on maintenance goes straight to the original purchase.

Advantages

  • study of a motorcycle for increasing the working life of individual units and mechanisms;
  • low weight, which guarantees good handling of the bike on all sections of the track;
  • increased safety by strengthening the frame structure with additional jumpers (ties);
  • high-quality shock absorbers and long suspension travel.

disadvantages

  • high price.

Kawasaki KX85-I

Rating: 4.5

Kawasaki KX85-I

One of two Kawasaki representatives in a category designed to compete in professional motocross competitions in the junior series. The Kawasaki KX85-I has a 85cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine, which is barely enough to generate 29 horsepower. With a weight of 68.5 kilograms, it allows you to reach speeds of up to 115 kilometers per hour, which in the conditions of motocross off-road competitions is a very acceptable result (naturally, for the class of subcompact motors).

A notable feature of the Kawasaki KX85-I is the UNI-TRAK adjustable mono rod, which is a rear suspension element. According to the driver's needs, it can be adjusted in 4 positions for compression and 16 positions for unclamping. In total, the travel of this suspension is 275 millimeters, allowing you to compensate for sudden changes in height when driving off-road. Technically, any consumer can afford this bike: the cost in the region of 3.5 thousand dollars does not look like something out of the ordinary among the millionaires presented in the rating. It is actively recommended to be acquired by those who want to make a broad step from amateurs to the category of professionals.

Advantages

  • low price;
  • pleasant appearance;
  • customizable suspension (front telescopic fork and rear monoshock with 275 mm travel);
  • balanced ratio of parameters of mass, power and speed;
  • imprisonment for professional competitions.

disadvantages

  • for its performance and direction of operation – not identified.

The best classic (road) motorcycles

Ducati Diavel Carbon

Rating: 5.0

Ducati Diavel Carbon

The leader of the classic motorcycle category is the bright and charismatic model produced by the Italian company Ducati, which has gained fame as one of the most balanced bikes in the premium segment. The V-shaped twin-cylinder Diavel Carbon engine has a volume of 1198 cubic centimeters, which produces 162 horses (at 9500 rpm) and 130.5 Nm of torque (at 8000 rpm).

The 'cannon' appearance of the motorcycle is the merit of the company's many years of production experience, coupled with the genius of individual engineers who worked on the concepts of the future vehicle. Stylish combination of black (carbon fiber lining) and red / silver in a number of elements only emphasize the aggressiveness and uncompromising character of the bike on the road. It is comfortable (despite the suspension travel limited to 120 millimeters), agile, light (234 kilograms in curb condition) and very expensive, which sounds like the most flattering complement in the context of the Ducati line of bikes.

Advantages

  • enchanting design, due to the combination of the spirit of colors, the presence of carbon overlays and emphasizing the protruding parts of the space frame;
  • spacious fuel tank (17 liters);
  • peak speed exceeds 300 kilometers per hour;
  • the weight is almost comparable to the results of superbikes;
  • high power from a modernized but slightly outdated two-cylinder engine;
  • optimal combination of price and quality.

disadvantages

  • not found.

Yamaha VMAX

Rating: 4.9

Yamaha VMAX

The legendary cruiser of the Yamaha motorcycle line, the release of which began in 1985, is the personification of a road idyll, sung and more than once voiced by consumers in their brightest desires. According to most experts, the VMAX is the undisputed king of the road, a true 'street bike' with a 1200cc engine that was (and still is) 140 horsepower. Considering a curb weight of 263 kilograms, a peak speed of 260 kilometers per hour is a very good result, but all these figures are very secondary in the context of this motorcycle.

The first roles in the Yamaha VMAX have always been and will be a component of the feeling of possessing this technique, if you like – the feeling of steering and maneuvering in city traffic, mixed with unlimited freedom when traveling on suburban highways. All this is due to the exceptionally precise operation of the engine at low and high revs without dips in the middle, as well as the comfort of the installed seat, coupled with a rather stiff suspension (the travel of which in front and rear was 140 and 99 millimeters, respectively). The cost of such a motorcycle in modern realities has grown significantly over the past couple of years, putting most fans of the line in a difficult position between the desire to buy and a tight budget.

Advantages

  • design in the spirit of classic 'road' motorcycles from the 80s;
  • a powerful engine that works well paired with 263 kilograms of bike weight;
  • high degree of reliability of all systems and assemblies;
  • comfort, despite a fairly stiff suspension with low travel.

disadvantages

  • the price has experienced a significant rise over the past few years.

MV Agusta Brutale 1090

Rating: 4.9

MV Agusta Brutale 1090

The 'brutal' MV Agusta 1090 is in many ways similar to the enchanting (unadorned) Ducati Diavel Carbon, appearing to consumers in almost the most favorable light within the road bike segment. The two most important advantages of the model – power and lightness – give, perhaps, the most reflexive combination among all competitors in the rating. 158 horsepower at 11,900 rpm can accelerate 200 kilograms of curb weight to 265 kilometers per hour. This is quite enough to ride on city roads or intercity highways, as they say, 'with a breeze'. Another plus for the MV Agusta Brutale 1090 is the volume of the fuel tank, designed to hold 23 liters of gasoline. When driving within reasonable limits (100-150 kilometers per hour), one full fill is enough for about 500 kilometers, which allows this bike to be classified as economical.

If we abstract from technical and near-technical nuances, some nuances will become visible, attributed to the individual characteristics of the bike and the corporate identity of the manufacturer. The fact is that the reason for a number of disputes in the circle of consumers was the inexpressive front part of the model, which did not get the windshield and the more 'predatory' shape. In fact, this is the only drawback that can be included in the Brutale 1090's passive – in other aspects it is absolutely enchanting.

Advantages

  • dry weight (183 kilograms);
  • maximum speed in the region of 265 kilometers per hour;
  • capacious fuel tank (23 liters);
  • thoughtful design (apparently, with the exception of the frontal part);
  • comfort even with 'constrained' suspension.

disadvantages

  • the featureless front end of the bike is a taste to be reckoned with.

Kawasaki Z1000 R Edition 2018

Rating: 4.8

Kawasaki Z1000 R Edition 2018

A very beautiful motorcycle, made in the corporate spirit of Kawasaki and confidently taking its rightful place in the ranking of the best road bikes. Let's make a reservation right away: there were three prerequisites for entering the rating. First, it's worth noting the Z1000 R Edition 2018's commitment to an overall meager color scheme with very thin and perfectly appropriate bright lines. This 'trick' works exclusively within the Kawasaki line of bikes – other companies are doing it more deliberately and crudely (which also has an effect).

Secondly, the four-cylinder engine delivers 111Nm of torque and 142bhp, giving a good boost right from the start. And thirdly, the curb weight of the motorcycle is only 221 kilograms, of which about 30 are on the tank. From a purely practical point of view, the Kawasaki Z1000 R Edition 2018 is still entering the time of receiving an objective assessment from consumers, since its appearance on the market took place quite recently. However, the start of sales 'from the spot' is impressive – even if not in Russia, the bike has already managed to bring its creators a million dollars around the world. And even if it's too early to talk about the future fate of the motorcycle, it still deserves an honorable place in the ranking of the best.

Advantages

  • highly recognizable design from Kawasaki;
  • optimal combination of price and quality;
  • optimal indicators of power and torque to the curb weight of the motorcycle, taking into account the engine volume of 1000 cubic meters;
  • high degree of reliability of the main components of the bike.

disadvantages

  • not fully formed opinion about the bike due to the recent release.

Yamaha Fazer 8 ABS

Rating: 4.7

Yamaha Fazer 8 ABS

Another beautiful development of the Yamaha company, which fell a little short of the superbike category due to the equipment with a small-cubic (by the standards of the 'major league') motor. Although in appearance, all the prerequisites for this exist: a very 'evil' shape, which is lacking only in the fairing flaps and a more massive front visor. The 779cc inline-four engine delivers 16.2 horsepower, which, along with 68 Nm of torque, has to accelerate 220 kilograms of curb weight. Hence the low speed indicators (relative to a number of competitors), and a more meek character when maneuvering in city traffic.

It is noteworthy that the last truly large-scale update of the Fazer 8 was made in 2013 – since then, engineers have only been improving the technologies and components of the bike. It should be said that from the point of view of comfort, this model could be even better. The stiff suspension (130mm travel) coupled with a poorly designed seat does not cause discomfort when driving short distances, but on long trips can be a real problem for the driver (not to mention the passenger). However, the Fazer 8 is an important part of Yamaha's line of classic motorcycles, whose experience has allowed the company to create some truly enchanting models, even in the hyperbike class.

Advantages

  • very interesting design, bordering between enduro, classics and sports bikes;
  • obedient control, easy maneuvering in city traffic;
  • continuous improvement of systems and technologies by manufacturers;
  • optimal quality indicators.

disadvantages

  • not the best example in terms of engine efficiency;
  • comfort on long journeys raises questions.

BMW R nine T Scrambler

Rating: 4.6

BMW R nine T Scrambler

At one time, the scrambler R nine T from the company BMW made a lot of noise, unexpectedly showing up for the announcement and purposefully – for the subsequent demonstration of possibilities along with the concept of appearance. To say that the community of avid motorcyclists was delighted is not to say a single word. A kind of 'all-terrain vehicle', nominally road, for which, in principle, it does not matter where the asphalt ends and the dirt road begins, produced the effect of an exploding bomb, and this is what caused this. Combining the features of the classic style a la 80s and a number of modern solutions (such as a layout in the spirit of sports bikes), the scrambler 'hooked' at once two segments of consumers: old school and young, who rushed to the harsh nature of the new 'chariot'.

Without much pretense to modernity, the R nine T has a 110-horsepower twin-cylinder engine with boxer fuel injection that can accelerate to 200 kilometers per hour, capturing the 220-kilogram structure on a fascinating journey through twisting country roads. Fuel consumption here ranges from 4.5 to 5.8 liters per 100 kilometers, which is a good result even when compared with competitive models. But this scrambler makes everything in the aggregate special – it is not possible to identify clearly weak points here and at this stage.

Advantages

  • The optimum ratio of price and quality;
  • engine with good working life;

    expressive bass exhaust from a double muffler from Akarpovic;

  • cool integration of two styles, working to attract consumers of different generations;
  • comfort and safety.

disadvantages

  • not found.

Honda CB 1000 RA (ABS)

Rating: 4.6

Honda CB 1000 RA (ABS)

Grace and amazing strength in a compact body is the most appropriate definition for a motorcycle Honda CB 1000 RA with an integrated ABS system. On board the 2.1-meter model, a compact 1000 cc engine is installed, which produces 125 horsepower and accelerates it to 230 kilometers per hour. An excellent result, considering that actually a close competitor, the KTM 690 Duke, has much more modest parameters.

In the context of the topic of speed characteristics, I would like to say a few words about handling. Despite its seemingly meek disposition Honda CB 1000 RA can and does love to surprise. Up to 150 kilometers per hour, the handling of the motorcycle can be considered a reference: it does not strive to be stubborn with a small change in course, provides sufficient downforce and enters curves satisfactorily. But what starts beyond this mark requires nothing more than a professional level of driving. The fact is that the streamlining of the model suffers greatly due to the absence of side panels and a windshield, due to which the uneven distribution of air flows can provoke wobbling and drifts. The task of the pilot in such situations is to react in a timely manner to what is happening and take countermeasures, which the ordinary user is not sufficiently trained in. Perhaps the final feature of the CB 1000 RA is the different suspension travels at the front and rear, equal to 128 and 120 millimeters, respectively. However, this does not affect the driver's comfort in any way – it is convenient to travel on a motorcycle both short and long distances.

Advantages

  • modern set of functions, implemented technologies;
  • an interesting shape of the exhaust pipe leading to a small pipe of the exhaust manifold;
  • comfortable fit and comfort when moving;
  • optimal power indicators, coupled with acceleration and maximum speed parameters;
  • pleasant appearance with an abundance of sharp corners and shapes.

disadvantages

  • unpredictability when driving at speeds of 150 kilometers per hour.

KTM 690 Duke

Rating: 4.5

KTM 690 Duke

The road bike, whose name translates as 'Duke', is, in fact, a very nimble, compact and pretty model with a very docile character. The 690cc single-slave engine has 67 horsepower, which is enough to provide decent speed performance. And this is despite the fact that almost 150 kilograms of dry mass have to be given movement.

A large part of the weight of the KTM 690 Duke is carried by a steel space frame, the elements of which are visible even without much analysis of the motorcycle and inspire confidence in the reliability of the entire structure. By the way, the frame elements also stand out against the general background due to the bright color, which looks very appropriate and unintentional. In general, you can safely put a five with a plus for the color of the motorcycle – many small details, the combination of gray and black with bright (contour) orange create a unique picture that is guaranteed not to become boring for a long period of time. As for the comfort parameters, in general neither experts nor users have any complaints about this side of the bike. The seat is made with strict observance of the balance of softness / stiffness, the suspension, albeit harsh, has a stroke of 135 millimeters, and the motorcycle accelerates without kicks, jerks and other indecencies.

Advantages

  • great selection of colors and their combinations;
  • high degree of reliability of individual structural elements;
  • low cost on the secondary and from an authorized dealer;
  • comfortable fit and comfort when traveling around the city;
  • rigid space frame made of high-strength steel.

disadvantages

  • low power of a single-cylinder engine.

Best Chinese motorcycles

Zongshen Winner ZS250GS

Rating: 4.7

Zongshen Winner ZS250GS

Zongshen Winner ZS250GS is an unconditional old-timer of a specific motorcycle segment from China, known in Russia for more than a dozen years. Despite the obsolescence of a number of nodes, it continues to be in demand among domestic users, mainly for a low cost, even from authorized dealers. Technically speaking, this bike is a true 'workhorse', designed for economical movement in the city or when traveling long distances. The 17.7-horsepower engine, not gluttonous and very nimble, in combination with 20 liters of gas tank volume, is certainly available.

Calling the Zongshen Winner ZS250GS a sport bike is pure sedition. However, the manners of a sporty style still exist in it. The engineers managed to achieve the effect of charging thanks to stock wheels on 17-inch disks, an original wind shield, as well as their cheap plastic linings, which make the motorcycle's appearance amazingly more expensive. If we discard all the 'tinsel', in the bottom line we get advantages in the form of economy, dynamics and its full-fledged feel, as well as amazing reliability of consumables (at least stock ones). Of the shortcomings, consumers complain only about the gearbox, which works in an incompletely understandable mode, but in the long term they just get used to it.

Advantages

  • very economical fuel consumption;
  • reliability of consumables;
  • good movement dynamics at low power of the 250 cc engine;
  • attractive appearance with sports claims.

disadvantages

  • not found.

Lifan LF250 Cruiser

Rating: 4.6

Lifan LF250 Cruiser

Cruise motorcycle from the well-known company Lifan, the prototype of which (to the smallest detail) was the well-known Yamaha Virago bike. Having received an engine with a volume of 250 cubic centimeters, the model was able to accelerate to an impressive 160 kilometers per hour, even despite the reinforced frame structure. All this is distributed over a five-speed transmission, which provides consistent acceleration without obvious jerks.

In terms of exterior styling, the Lifan LF250 Cruiser has inherited most of the Virago's characteristics, as well as the spirit of the legendary cruising motorcycle. The black color of the body elements in combination with chrome trims give the model an air of calm superiority, with which one wants to leave mortal thoughts far behind and slowly drive along good desolate roads along the picturesque coast. Due to the special purpose of the bike, the manufacturers took care of the safety and comfort of passengers on the road: the seat has acquired orthopedic features, the dashboard is placed on the gas tank, and you can assemble on a cruise using trailed trunks. Of course, there were some drawbacks here, but they are all somehow connected with consumables and connecting cables (like the clutch cable). Fortunately, there is an option with the addition of the Chinese with original spare parts from the Japanese 'original source'.

Advantages

  • almost complete clone of Yamaha Virago with full interchangeability of parts;
  • interesting design;
  • maximum speed of about 160 kilometers per hour;
  • reinforced frame construction.

disadvantages

  • short-lived consumables that require replacement at the beginning of operation.

Patron taker 250

Rating: 4.5

Patron taker 250

Patron Taker 250 is a typical Chinese-made, which combines good technical characteristics and stylish design. With a small volume of a single-cylinder four-valve engine (only 250 cubic centimeters), its speed can reach 140 kilometers per hour. The reason for this lies in the use of lightweight construction materials, which reduced the total weight of the bike to 146 kilograms. As for the external showiness, the Taker 250 owes it to the cool plastic body kit and streamlined forms. After the restyling, the body acquired additional stampings into the 'skin' (mainly on the bottom), and the classic round headlight gave way to a monolithic plastic shield with a kind of broadening of the light source.

As users note, while driving on the track, the Patron Taker 250 behaves very agreeably and predictably, which is due to a good design solution (with a rigid diagonal frame, a mono-shock absorber on the rear wheel, as well as an original front fork). Among the advantages are good maneuverability, comfortable fit, the aforementioned reliability and stylish look. The disadvantages lie in the little things – consumables pour out very quickly.

Advantages

  • acceptable price;
  • very striking appearance (in versions before and after re-styling);
  • very lightweight construction (146 kg), which increases maneuverability and speed;
  • the ability to accelerate to 140 km / h.

disadvantages

  • low quality of consumables.
