The choice of a car according to the parameter of an affordable budget has long become a classic among Russian consumers. In order to get the desired model, people often go into loans without realizing all the risks and criticality of the situation. It often happens that the acquisition of a car of a certain status is not consistent with the owner's real earnings, so maintaining it in good condition as it is used is expensive and brings more harm than good and practical benefit.

In the modern realities of the global automotive industry, it is quite easy to find a car in accordance with disposable income, however, beginners and people who are experienced in owning a car often have difficulties in identifying profitable offers. In this regard, the magazine's team, together with in-house experts, compiled a rating of the 22 most budget cars, divided into three thematic categories (by body type). Objective technical indicators, opinions of users and authoritative sources (publications, independent auto experts, etc.), as well as the parameter of the initial and final cost of the available complete sets were chosen as the criteria for selecting nominees for the final top list.

Lada granta

The most inexpensive sedan in terms of the objective parameter of average cost is another representative of the LADA company, whose production started in 2011. With its arrival on the market, Granta has replaced the classic series of Samara cars, as well as Kalina in the corresponding body. At the moment, it has as many as 14 complete sets, based on 8- and 16-valve engines with four cylinders (located in a row) with a volume of 1.6 liters and a capacity of 87 to 106 horsepower. Also, users have a choice of three transmissions:

1. five-speed manual (5 MT);
2. four-speed automatic (4 AT);
3. five-stage robotic (5 AMT).

As the owners of LADA Granta note, it is also characterized by low fuel consumption: in the combined cycle, the average gasoline consumption per 100 kilometers is 6.8 liters. For more than 7 years of its existence, this model has undergone a restyling, and quite recently the release of the updated Sport series began, so with a high degree of confidence we can say that Granta will remain with us for at least 3-4 years.

Datsun on-DO

Car rating in the budget segment: 4.8

One step away from the leader of the rating is an inexpensive Chinese car Datsun on-DO, presented on the domestic market in 15 trim levels. In general, only a minimal price tag can be called its distinguishing feature – it barely exceeds 400 thousand rubles (Access), while the most expensive version will cost an ordinary user 651 thousand (Dream II).

There is practically nothing to say about the appearance of the car: users note that the on-DO looks like a mediocre sedan, in which the features of a number of pre-styling 'classmates' are guessed. Engine power here ranges from 87 to 106 horsepower, and fuel consumption does not exceed 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers (average). The maximum speed varies in the range from 178 to 184 kilometers per hour, and depends more on the type of transmission. And if in the technical part everything is more than modest, then the internal equipment completely and completely depends on the configuration: here the Chinese tried their best, equipping the cabin with an on-board computer, light / rain sensors, and many others, in general, already included in the everyday life by systems.

Renault Logan

The full-fledged primary source and ideological inspirer of the LADA Granta concept, occupying the honorable third line in the list of the most inexpensive cars on the Russian market. Despite the rather honorable age of the series Renault by automotive standards, Logan continues to delight motorists with new concepts and restyled versions – now there is no trace of the former clumsy in the flagship models. The new design was developed in close cooperation with PJSC AvtoVAZ, so familiar features can be seen in the lineup of the Russian automaker.

At the moment Renault Logan is sold on the market in four large trim levels: Access (hello, on-DO), Life, Drive, Style. Differences in appearance between them, of course, are present, but not in such quantity as differences in the interior and possibilities inside the cabin. The power of the 1.6-liter engine here varies from 82 to 113 horsepower (depending on the number of valves), and only automatic (4AT) and manual (5MT) transmissions are used as transmissions. Regarding adaptation to Russian conditions, a whole point is spelled out in the technical characteristics of Logan, which includes adjusting the operation of the engine for starting in a cold climate, a guarantee of service of the mechanical part for 3 years or 100 thousand kilometers, and many other rather obvious points.

• fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 5.7 and 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers (for 5MT and 4AT, respectively);

Geely emgrand 7

As a representative of the gradually outgoing C + segment of the world of sedans, the fourth line of the rating was taken by the inexpensive Chinese car Geely Emgrand 7. In some incomprehensible way, its assembly was localized in Belarus, from where the finished models (albeit in only two versions) are delivered to the Russian market. The car turned out to be ambiguous, as evidenced by the reviews of autobloggers and user reviews, primarily due to a number of design errors in ergonomics and specifically in the driver's seat (incomprehensible seat fit, steering wheel shifted to the left and skewed along the axis, etc.).

Abstracting from a thorough analysis, outwardly Geely Emgrand 7 makes a good impression, although it does not reach the same Kia Rio or Hyundai Solaris (aesthetically speaking). The reason for this view of the car is the inflated price tag for the maximum, but stripped-down configuration, in which the 7 begins to give the impression of a good class C + sedan. It is equal to 970 thousand rubles, which is a lot for a Chinese car. Especially considering the presence of a 1.8-liter engine under the hood, which produces only 133 horsepower paired with a five-speed manual transmission.

• the presence of defects in the interior, ergonomics and a number of external trifles – this is not what users expect from a car in the transitional C + segment.

Lada Vesta

Rating of the car in the budget segment: 4.7

The fifth line of the rating goes to one of the freshest concepts of the AvtoVAZ company – the LADA Vesta car, the cost of which starts from 500 thousand rubles (Standard with a manual transmission). In total, the range includes 23 configurations, of which the most expensive is Exclusive with a five-speed robotic gearbox, costing 746 thousand. Compared to Geely Emgrand 7, this price alignment looks good, however, at the same time, Vesta is positioned as a slightly lower car class.

Under the hood of this model is either a 1.6-liter 106 horsepower engine, or a 1.8-liter 16-valve unit for 122 horses. Together with them, only robotic and mechanical transmissions work, which is a small feature of the model, although somewhat controversial, given the congestion of roads in a number of regions (robots can hardly tolerate movement in the 'start / stop' rhythm). It is foolish to deny the fact that Vesta turned out to be beautiful, especially against the background of previous representatives of the company's range. But a number of hereditary problems still remain in it, but the engineers and the company are on the right track.

• nice appearance (stamping on the sides + X-shaped front part).

Hyundai Solaris

The undisputed leader in sales in Russia over the past years, the most 'popular', albeit Korean, car with amazing vitality. Hyundai Solaris is a clear example of the balance between good looks and satisfactory performance, a car designed especially for people looking for a compromise on value. The exterior of the Korean budget flagship is full of artsy elements and interesting geometry that grab the attention of others and set it apart from the crowd.

There are two types of engines under the hood of Solaris:

1. 1.4-liter Kappa 1.4 MPI with a capacity of under 100 horsepower;
2. 1.6-liter Gamma 1.6 MPI, from which the engineers managed to squeeze 123 horses.

Even in comparison with the Vesta (seemingly a new generation car), the Korean manages to look decent, however, there is one big 'but' in this. And it lies entirely in the price: the starting price for a 1.4-liter sample with a 6-speed manual transmission is 730 thousand rubles – of course, there are no talk of any additions to the cabin and options here. Something more suitable for long-term use starts at 850 thousand, and ends at a price of under a million. Which, however, does not prevent the car from remaining one of the most inexpensive since its first release.

Chery Bonus

Car rating in the budget segment: 4.3

On the seventh line of the rating is another representative of the 'Celestial Empire' – a subcompact sedan Cherry Bonus with an exterior design bias under the Volkswagen Golf (and a little Ford Focus). For the entire production time (since 2008), this car has undergone only external and interior changes, leaving the mechanical layout unchanged. The independent McPherson levers played the role of the front suspension, and at the rear you can observe the picture standard for budget sedans – dependent hydraulic struts with springs. Under the hood is a 1.5-liter engine producing 109 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque.

In general, a lot of claims can be made about the quality of Chery Bonus production: it is clear that the car was created with a bias towards the budget segment and the Chinese decided to save as much as possible on design. Despite this, the 'magic of numbers' works wonders: the starting price for a brand new sedan was 350 thousand rubles and people were willing to buy it … until the moment when crossovers and SUVs appeared in the lineup and drove Bonus out of the Russian market.

Ravon R3

Rating of the car in the budget segment: 4.2

In 2016, the Ravon company entered the domestic market, and the inexpensive R3 Nexia became its flagship sedan. You may ask: 'Is this Nexia, which until recently was produced repurchased Daewoo?'. Not. These are completely different cars, which have in common only the geography of production – the city of Asaka, in Uzbekistan. But it has a lot in common with the less obvious development from General Motors, which existed in the realities of the European segment – Chevrolet Aveo. Despite the typical sedan exterior and stern, the R3's front end is a typical reference to the T255 body used for the Aveo.

In addition to GM concepts, the sedan from Ravon also received a 1.5-liter engine with 107 horsepower, acceleration to 100 kilometers per hour with which it takes 12.5 seconds. The result for a budget car is quite good, but the increased fuel consumption is depressing: an average of 8-9 liters for every 100 kilometers in the combined driving cycle. However, the cost of it matches the technical condition: the price-list fork starts from 450 to 579 thousand rubles. Quite a modest spread, given the number of 'goodies' coming with an increase in the trim level. And yet, the Ravon R3 does not reach at least some high place in the rating – this is a purely niche budget-level sedan, suitable for deeply family people or for purchase as a first car.

Chery Tiggo 5 I Restyling

Car rating in the budget segment: 4.9

The first line of the rating of the best inexpensive SUVs goes to the updated Chery Tiggo 5, which combines both visual and technical components of superiority over opponents. In essence, this car is designed for conquering some light to medium-difficult landscapes – trips to nature or moderate cross-out. It will be extremely pitiful to drive on difficult routes with such an external finish – for these purposes there are more 'rough' options on the market.

Thus, Chery Tiggo 5 can be safely entered into the category of representative SUVs. But let's deal with the technical part. Under the hood is a two-liter (let's just say that it is obviously insufficient) engine with a capacity of 136 horsepower and a torque of 182 Nm. This is not enough for the weight of the car, but the dynamics do not seem to feel an imbalance. Ultimately, the 'poorest' equipment of this car will cost the user 900 thousand rubles, and the price for a top speed with a variator as a transmission will be 1 million 200 thousand.

Chevrolet Niva I Restyling

Car rating in the budget segment: 4.8

From 2002 to this day, Niva cars Chevrolet have been actively involved in the road traffic of Russia, and in the near future they are not going to leave our market (like the now deceased Chevrolet Lachetti). In 2014, GM AvtoVAZ was making very interesting plans for restyling the old body, in fact changing it to a more aggressive and attractive look. A prototype was made, presented to the general public … and left in the rank of a concept for an indefinite period. Therefore, we have what we have: the final restyled version is not much different from the old-style models, with the exception of the interior re-equipment, minor updates to the body part (snorkel and plastic bottom to protect the arches and sills from corrosion) and reducing the number of trim levels to four.

The retail price for Chevrolet Niva is from 680 to 800 thousand rubles – for a compact SUV with good maneuverability and 'wide range' this is quite a normal amount (the ceiling of prices for classic 'Niva' ends exactly at 600 thousand). For this money, the user gets 80 horsepower from a 1.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine, 10 liters of fuel consumption in the combined cycle, and up to 140 kilometers per hour of power.

Advantages

• simple and reliable off-road vehicle;
• lightweight and compact, with a shortened base;
• widespread on the market, including the secondary.

disadvantages

• low power problems do not disappear anywhere – the technical model of car development does not imply an engine upgrade in the foreseeable future.

Great wall hover h5

Rating of the car in the budget segment: 4.7

A compact and inexpensive Chinese-made SUV, built on the basis of old and successful cars of Japanese and German origin. So, for the H5, the once popular Isuzu Axiom, produced at the very beginning of the 2000s, became the official donor. The body received characteristic features with minor modifications for modern types, and also enlisted the support of optics from cars Mazda (CX-7 models, to be more precise), which critics did not fail to draw attention to when presenting a car.

From a purely practical point of view, the Great Wall Hover H5 can be positioned as a 'pseudo SUV', since its visual and internal parts were designed more for movement in the urban rhythm, but not for impassable swamps and mud. It is sold in Russia, complete with three different engines:

1. with a 2.4-liter gasoline with 136 horsepower;
2. with a 2-liter diesel engine with 143 horsepower;
3. a 2.5-liter turbodiesel with 150 horsepower released in 2015.

In general, the car turned out to be good, but the fact of its high cost still scares off a number of buyers. The initial price for the basic configuration is one million rubles, and the maximum cost can reach up to 1.5 million.

• good options for a complete set of engines (gasoline + two diesel for 2 and 2.5 liters);
• interesting appearance (fusion of elements of Japanese and German cars).

UAZ Patriot I Restyling 3

Car rating in the budget segment: 4.4

With the next update of the appearance, the UAZ Patriot also underwent changes in the mechanical part: instead of the old engine, a new ZMZ Pro unit with a capacity of 150 horsepower was integrated into the line (but only for premium trim levels). In the visual part, everything remained practically unchanged – a rather evil and awkward look, which retained a fighting character for off-road trips.

Despite the high landing, the Patriot's ground clearance cannot be called huge – the bridge still lowers the clearance to 210 millimeters, taking all the irregularities onto itself. Due to the weight of 2125 kilograms, the maximum developed speed does not exceed 150 kilometers per hour, but for off-road driving this is not the most important parameter. Fuel consumption is within quite acceptable limits: in the combined cycle, approximately 12-13 liters are spent per 100 kilometers. Everything about the interior is also more or less acceptable: there is an on-board computer, a fairly comfortable fit and all the necessary functions according to the current filling standards. Cars of the series cost from 759,000 to 1,103,000 rubles, offering a choice of as many as six trim levels – from Fleet to Prestige and Maximum.

Advantages

• an updated engine with premium trim levels (150 horsepower, 2.7 liters);
• fairly low fuel consumption;
• expanded line of complete sets;
• off-road imprisonment.

Renault Sandero Stepway

Car rating in the budget segment: 4.9

The category of budget crossovers is a haven for the third car of the concern Renault, which is more budgetary than the Kaptur and Duster. Basically, Sandero Stepway can be called modest in everything from design to driving performance. Having received a redesigned appearance, it added in terms of beauty and visibility, but it remained a 'rough' version for trips on light and medium off-road, or for quiet and calm operation as a family car.

Yes, Sandero Stepway sorely lacks the Duster's cross-country ability, but for all its shortcomings, it does not try to seem like something conceptually high, clearly fulfilling the manufacturer's asking price. This model is based on a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 82 to 113 horsepower in combination with a variator, manual (5MT) or automatic (4AT) transmissions. It produces a maximum of 172 kilometers per hour with acceleration to hundreds in 11.1 seconds. In the combined cycle, consumption varies greatly from 6.7 liters for the CVT model to 8.4 liters for the automatic version.

As for the cost, the most basic model Sandero Stepway will cost about 723 thousand rubles, while 876 thousand will be requested for the maximum configuration.

Advantages

• good top speed and good balance of power with weight;
• significant improvement in appearance compared to pre-styling models;
• a wide variety of engine and transmission variations;
• good dynamics and handling is what you need for a family car.

Lada XRAY

In fact, the most budgetary representative of crossovers in the Russian market segment remains the product developed by the AvtoVAZ company – LADA XRay. The purpose of creating this car was the need to impose competition on foreign brands, winning back some of the customers in the field of standard urban SUVs. XRay made a special bet on the design, without actually touching the original (and let's be honest, not the best) chassis – at least in terms of driving feel.

It can be argued with a high degree of confidence that the positive design trends were provoked by Mitubishi, which, incidentally, became part of the alliance and provided some prototypes for free use. As for the configurations, it should be noted that it is based on two 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines with a capacity of 106 and 122 horsepower, respectively. As with the Vesta, the XRay uses only a mechanical and robotic gearbox with five gearshifts. Only one thing can be said about the interior of the model: it is poor, but quite acceptable. As noted in AvtoVAZ, in the near future we will have at least two restyling with changes in the outer part of the body, as well as in interior details. We do not know how large-scale the rework will be, but we hope to see gradual progress of the domestic auto industry in the future.

Nissan Terrano

Car rating in the budget segment: 4.8

The new generation of crossovers Nissan Terrano is distinguished by a very evil disposition and imprisonment for conquering off-road, rather than for a peaceful existence within the city. The main emphasis in its appearance is made on the enlargement of the features of the radiator grill, a slight modification of the front and rear optics together with bumpers. Despite the external weight, the car weighs only 1.5 tons – a 2-liter petrol engine with 143 horsepower and 195 Nm of torque is enough for this weight.

By the way, the configuration indicated above corresponds to the maximum configuration in the line with all-wheel drive, the cost of which goes beyond the mark of 1 million 150 thousand rubles. The very initial version of the Terrano Comfort will have only front-wheel drive and a 1.6-liter engine with 114 horsepower in conjunction with a five-speed manual transmission. The cost of this option will be approximately 900 thousand rubles. In general, both in terms of consumption and durability, the car turned out to be just what you need: driving in a combined cycle will require no more than 7.5-8.7 liters per 100 kilometers, and thick body metal is guaranteed to withstand the test with reagents and chips, and will last at least 10 years old.

Renault Duster

Rating of the car in the budget segment: 4.7

An unambiguous hit among fans of off-roading, which is more and more often opposed to the incomparable 'Niva' in terms of the ability to overcome difficult obstacles. Duster is a model that has grown from a nondescript body into a full-fledged and beautiful flagship among the crossover line Renault. In fact, its previous iteration became the progenitor of the Kaptur model described below – only the body was changed.

The uniqueness of the Duster in comparison with other representatives of the series lies in the choice of three engines:

1. 1.6-liter gasoline inline 'four', giving out up to 114 horsepower;
2. A 2-liter petrol equivalent with 143 horsepower (both of these engines 'migrated' straight to the Kaptur);
3. 1.5-liter diesel engine with 240 Nm of torque and 109 horsepower.

Fortunately, from the point of view of cost, there is a more consumer-loyal situation: a starting equipment with a gasoline engine and front-wheel drive will cost from 709 thousand rubles. The Drive Plus version – the highest possible configuration – will cost the buyer 1 million 117 thousand rubles.

• very good cross-country ability, proven over the years of the model's existence on the market;

Hyundai Creta

Rating of the car in the budget segment: 4.7

A kind of mini-masterpiece from the company Hyundai, which has launched a 'lightweight' version of Santa Fe and Tucson for fans and fans of compact urban crossovers. Creta turned out to be surprisingly lively and charismatic car, not devoid of common features of the corporate models of this restyled period.

The main portion of praise for this car came from lovers of off-road driving – despite its aristocratic features, this Korean flagship is not averse to tinkering in the mud. But with regard to equipment with Creta, not everything is so obvious, and now we are not talking about the interior. Under the hood, it (depending on the configuration) can contain only two power units:

1. the first is a 1.6-liter with 123 horsepower and a combined consumption of 6.7 liters. Works in conjunction with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
2. the second – a 2 liter engine with 149 forces, consuming 7.5 liters per hundred and paired only with an automatic transmission with 6 shifting steps.

Fortunately, both versions have four-wheel drive. Over the past two years, the cost of Hyundai Creta has increased significantly, and now the purchase of the poorest configuration will cost customers 947 thousand rubles. Those who want to get the most will have to fork out 1 million 325 thousand rubles (and this is not the limit).

• brisk 149 horsepower combined with low weight and all-wheel drive;

Renault Kaptur

Rating of the car in the budget segment: 4.6

Ideological rival Hyundai Creta, who actually loses to the Korean in almost all components of objective assessment. The main advantage of the Renault Kaptur lies in its very pleasant design – the streamlined shape, at the time of the presentation, made critics nervously fiddle with the cuffs on the sleeves. In addition to this, there is lightness, which directly depends and, as it were, imposed on the visual component.

In fact, it turned out that behind the beautiful packaging, consumers are expected, if not disappointment, then a very sincere surprise. Firstly, in terms of sound insulation: it feels like this process was simply bypassed at the stage of drawing up the technology and assembly procedure. In terms of equipment, everything is also in order with it: in Russia, the model is sold with two engines and, accordingly, two transmissions – automatic and mechanical. The first 1.8-liter engine produces 131 horsepower and 170 Nm of torque, which is quite enough to provide confident traction of its own weight. The second unit is a two-liter gasoline analogue, providing 141 power and 191 Nm of torque, but paired only with an automatic transmission. In this regard, higher fuel consumption and poor off-road driving results can be expected. The rest of the flagship Geely sample is gorgeous, and along with other competitors (like Creta, Kaptur, Qashqai, etc.) is worthy of purchase. The price for Emgrand X7 starts at 990 thousand and is limited to 1 million 280 thousand rubles.

An inexpensive crossover of a rather pleasant appearance, which has long been firmly entrenched among domestic lovers of inexpensive and very high-quality cars. The current appearance resembles the outdated concepts of the flagship representatives of SUVs, diluting it with modern equipment and small corporate changes (so that it does not look too similar to the original source).

Under the hood of Chery Tiggo there is a 1.6-liter petrol 'four' with 126 horsepower. Moreover, the constancy of power is maintained regardless of the transmission used, of which there are only two at the disposal of this car: CVT (variator) and 5MT (mechanics). The maximum torque reaches 160 Nm, which is quite enough for 1,480 kilograms of net weight.

This model works exclusively on shallow terrain and in mud of average ease of travel – the lack of control, mediocre overhangs and imprisonment for the urban environment affect. The cost of the Tiggo 3 starts at 730 thousand and ends at 900 thousand rubles with the possibility of adding some optional little things. You can consider it as a real option for everyday life, but if solving problems with off-road driving is a priority, you should turn to buying something from the family Renault or Hyundai.

The ninth line of the Lifan X60 is due to two factors: firstly, it is the only compact crossover in the segment of the Russian market that has only front-wheel drive, and secondly, its driving performance has remained practically unchanged since its debut 2011. Conceptually, this car is a reworked version of the Toyota RAV4, another copy of the already not creative Chinese industry.

Since 2012, Lifan X60 began to be assembled in Cherkessk, at the well-known Derways plant, and from that moment it has been a fairly popular choice among domestic motorists. Over the years, the corporation managed to make several restyling, during which only small body elements were modified, such as optics (rear), radiator grill and wheel arch linings (due to the aggressive effect of the environment on the thin metal of the body). As an engine, only a 1.8-liter gasoline unit was invariably used here, providing power up to 128 horsepower and 162 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption remains at 8.2 liters per 100 kilometers – a bit too much, especially compared to some of the faster and less expensive competitors. The cost of a new car reaches 1 million rubles, but this is the case when you can enter the secondary market.

Qashqai has made it a rule to update every year, however, these updates pass almost without a trace – the difference with previous versions is so minimal that consumers themselves often get confused about the number names of restyling. But for the Japanese, this is an excellent reason to once again raise the prices for the line: and even despite this, the car continues to be in active demand.

The base engine for Nissan Qashqai is a time-worn 1.2-liter engine producing up to 115 horsepower – perhaps the most interesting development of all present. True, the fuel consumption in it is unbalanced, and in conjunction with a variator as a transmission, the car spends 6.2 liters for every 100 kilometers. If you want something more powerful – no question! In the presence of a diesel engine for 130 horses, consuming only 4.9 liters of fuel on the combined cycle, or a 2-liter gasoline engine for 144 horsepower (with a consumption of 7.2 liters). But the most important value of the Qashqai lies in the exceptional comfort achieved through the use of a multi-link rear axle suspension system and McPherson at the front, which effectively dampens vibrations and moves ergonomically even on Russian roads.
