How to choose a lure for fishing
The choice of bait for fishing is always fraught with a certain number of difficulties, ignoring which can negate any attempts to catch more trophies. Someone prefers to choose spinners on the 'like-dislike' principle, someone relies on randomness, but someone meticulously gets acquainted with all aspects of the right choice and deservedly gets more return from fishing in any body of water. In this regard, the journal recommends that you pay attention to the following criteria:
Type of spoon. All fishing lures can be divided into two large groups, corresponding to the principle of their work:
-
oscillating – is a simple curved plate capable of making 'playing' movements in the horizontal direction. They have an eyelet on each edge, in one of which a ring with a tee is attached, and in the other – a fishing line.
-
rotating – more complex lures, which are based on the rotational movement of the petal around the axis on which the balancing weight, hook and line are fixed.
The choice in this situation strongly depends on the preferences of the fish in a particular body of water. However, remember that any serious angler's lure collection should include both types of lures.
Colour. A parameter that significantly affects the success of fishing. When fishing in turbid water, experts recommend using brighter spinners with a characteristic glare coating or holography. However, in this matter, it is important not to overdo it, since the predator may be frightened of a deliberately intense color and not 'bite' at an artificial bait. The principle of moderation should be adhered to when fishing in clean water – here it is better to completely abandon overly bright samples.
Body texture. The relief and texture of the body (or petal) of the spoon can also cause additional stimulation of the predator to attack. With a bright color, the corrugation or bumpiness of the surface can create additional highlights that simply cannot be ignored by the cherished trophies. If everything is fine with biting in the reservoir, then the choice between smooth and embossed bait becomes a matter of personal preference.
Spoon weight. This parameter should be selected based on the depth at which the fish most often lies. When fishing for a bottom predator, it is most rational to use heavy sinking spoons. And vice versa – the higher the fish swims to the surface, the lighter the bait should be.

The best spoons
RUBLEX ORKLA
Rating: 4.9
The leader of the rating unexpectedly became the most famous series of lures from Rublex – Orkla. Combining the S-shaped profile and the classic Norvegienne shape, this series has conquered world pike and river salmon fishing competitions many times. The entire design of this model is sharpened for dynamic jump-like movements in the water column, which strongly resemble the movements of a wounded floating fish.
The Rublex Orkla lure range includes six model lines, with sizes ranging from 5.6 to 8.1 centimeters and weighing from 8 to 24 grams. The colors (in some cases) also amaze the imagination with their irregularity and catchiness, before which even the most lazy and clumsy predator cannot resist. The opinion of experienced anglers about this series was formed a decade ago, and since then has not changed one iota. The spoon is definitely recommended for purchase to all amateurs and inexperienced beginners, as it is able to 'shoot' (and revive the bite) even in the most hopeless situations.
Advantages
-
acceptable cost;
-
extensive experience of use at international and world championships;
-
classic and uncomplicated form, which brings a high bite result;
-
good conditions for long casting;
-
extensive assortment within the model range;
-
easy to learn.
disadvantages
- not detected.
Smith pure
Rating: 4.8
The Japanese company Smith rarely pleases fans with the release of excellent spinners, but they are ready to forgive a lot for the release of the Pure series. An excellent lineup contains an abundance of standard sizes, ranging from 1.5 gram specimens for catching small and nimble predators, and ending with quite impressive 18 gram 'plaques'. Each separately taken shaker is designed for use in various kinds of reservoirs and the original technique of animation. The original idea of the Japanese engineers was to create a complete salmon bait from Pure. But Russian fishermen interpreted her as a good 'fighter' with river fish, for which they were awarded high efficiency. It was with their submission that the series began to be associated with fishing for pike, perch, asp, chub, (rarely) taimen, and other inhabitants of river waters.
The cost of models has recently become a topic of heated discussion, the majority of votes express general dissatisfaction. You can understand them – not so long ago (about two or three years ago) they cost almost half as much.
Advantages
-
the versatility of the series in all its diversity;
-
imprisonment for catching any river predator (with variable success rates);
-
variation of models in size (2-4 centimeters) and weight (1.5-18 grams);
-
an abundance of productive colors.
disadvantages
- high cost of assortment.
Kuusamo Rasanen
Rating: 4.7
A direct competitor to the Blue Fox Esox lures, which excels when fishing for trophy pike. The linear dimensions of this bait vary in the range of 40-90 millimeters, and the weight varies in the region of 6-28 grams. However, the whole palette of the main features of Kuusamo Rasanen is entirely tied to the design aspects. Firstly, within the framework of the consolidated rating, this spinner turned out to be the only non-hookbait that can (and should) be used in snags and grass thickets. Secondly, the body of the bait has a groove with a dark red bead firmly fixed there. Its purpose is not only decorative, but also enticing in nature, giving out low-frequency acoustic sound as it moves through the water column.
The opinion of experienced consumers places Kuusamo Rasanen among the cult lures of its time, noting the good flight performance of the lures and high efficiency, despite the uncomplicated design. There is little debate over price, but little is reflected in the overall sales picture.
Advantages
-
excellent flight performance across the entire line;
-
simple and original design with a bead in the undercut of the spoon;
-
high catchability in the current and in stagnant water;
-
a sufficient number of colors for any fishing conditions.
disadvantages
- high price.
Mepps Syclops
Rating: 4.7
The well-known artificial bait in the assortment of the Mepps trademark, which has become widespread among users of neighboring countries, occupies an honorable place in the rating. It combines simplicity and practicality, which are manifested both during manufacture and when used on reservoirs. For more than twenty years of production history, the Syclops line has acquired seven models ranging from 4 to 9 centimeters long and weighing from 3.5 to 26 grams. They all use the same body structure, but have different boundaries of applicability. The S-shaped geometry of the spinner allows for wiring both in stagnant water and in shallow water, without losing the game's efficiency at all.
As an additional irritant, all models are equipped with a holographic sticker that gives the body the texture of a real fish, and some also receive a red cambric, aimed at increasing the catch of the spoon in the eyes of a predator. According to consumers, perch, pike, pike perch, taimen, trout and even salmon can be potential trophies for Mepps Syclops, regardless of size.
Advantages
-
wide range of sizes and weights;
-
emphasis on simplicity and external reliability of the bait (holography, eye, texture);
-
the ability to fish on the current and in still water;
-
additional equipment with cambric and other elements of catchiness;
-
widespread distribution in the network of retail fishing shops in Russia;
-
relatively low cost.
disadvantages
- not found.
WILLIAMS WABLER
Rating: 4.6
Furious wobbler of Canadian origin, the creation of which (according to unconfirmed reports) falls on the 1940s. For more than seventy years of history, this model has undergone about fifty different upgrades, and today Williams Wabler can no longer be called a 'hostage' of one form. With varying degrees of success, anglers have tested rounded and curved, arrow-shaped and drop-like vibrators in the hope of finding something of their own in the series, and have consistently been successful in this field.
The whole variety of Williams Wabler lures fits into the weight range from 1.4 to 28 grams. Recently, the manufacturer has relied on the sale of whole sets of 6-10 baits, rather than single specimens. This step made the purchase (per unit of product) a little more profitable, but did not have the desired effect either among experienced amateurs, or even more so among beginners.
Advantages
-
a huge variety of shapes, colors and weights of lures;
-
more than 70 years on the market;
-
the ability to find a spoon in the assortment for any conditions;
-
excellent work of models on stagnant water and mountain rivers.
disadvantages
- emphasis on a new model of product sales.
The best spinners
Mepps AGLIA LONG
Rating: 4.9
Let's say in advance – this is not the last appearance of the Agila Long series in this ranking. In its outstanding creation, Mepps has tried to build on the principle of minimalism, squeezing to the maximum the potential that inconspicuous (individually) structural elements give. The spinner got its name from the elongated petal, which acts as a kind of balancer when fishing on the current, and also gives the spinner ease of control and unintended throw. The axial section traditionally contains a weight and a bright red bead to attract the attention of a predator. The tee is open and does not have a front sight, which does not affect the overall catchability of Agila Long.
As is the case with opponents, consumer opinion overwhelmingly considers this spoon to be among the best. In particular, the lineup has received approval, which contains 6 lines of lures (of various standard sizes) for all occasions. Their price points are also completely satisfactory for anglers who prefer to have at least one Agila Long in their own collection.
Advantages
-
five weight thresholds in the line (2.5 to 29 grams);
-
attractive to all river predators;
-
simple and efficient design;
-
wide popularity among domestic users; \
-
very low price for the lineup.
disadvantages
- not found.
BLU E FOX Super Vibrax
Rating: 4.8
Extremely noticeable BLU E FOX Super Vibrax Spinner can easily compete in showiness with the old ABU GARCIA Reflex. Made according to the classical scheme, this model (in small variations up to 8 grams) is very popular among the river perch, which instantly reacts to the appearance of a bright 'bird' in the water column. The petal of 'Vybrax' is made in the traditional style, teardrop-shaped with a depression in the central part. This configuration gives the bait the ability to wind up even at minimal thrust, starting abruptly at the start of a fast drive. The weight of the spinner is made in the form of a streamlined capsule with a small plane at the tip, which creates drag and emits low vibrations and acoustic sounds.
The larger variants BLU E FOX Super Vibrax work in the same way, but their 'audience' changes dramatically towards pike, walleye, trout (when working in the current) and chub. Such models are inexpensive and are recommended for novice anglers as an introductory lure, the behavior of which is very easy to feel during fishing.
Advantages
-
good flight data;
-
an abundance of weight options (from 6 to 12 grams in increments of 2);
-
extraordinary catchiness and subtle work during the posting;
-
versatility in terms of fish caught;
-
low cost.
disadvantages
- not found.
ABU GARCIA Reflex
Rating: 4.7
Perhaps this is the oldest representative of the rating, the production of which was launched back in 1951. In those years, spinners (like any other inventory) got not just sonorous names, but those that carried a global meaning. Actually, this creation was called 'Reflex' for a reason. The technology of transverse corrugation of the surface of the petal, which had practically no curvature in the central part, was rewarded with an instant reaction from large predators. Added 'salt' and the axial part, which has gone through many modifications and today is a kind of spotted larva. The final reflective element at all times was considered a tee fly made of purely light, bright fabrics.
With a weight distribution of 7, 12 and 18 grams, the ABU GARCIA Reflex always shows satisfactory results in terms of accuracy and casting distance. Consumers love this spinner very much for its catchiness in all these aspects, low price and versatility in terms of catch.
Advantages
-
the oldest spinner in the ranking;
-
instantly attracts the attention of predators due to its catchiness;
-
three versions by weight;
-
low price;
-
high degree of reliability and durability.
disadvantages
- not found.
MYRAN Wipp
Rating: 4.7
MYRAN Wipp belongs to that rare type of lure that attracts attention due to its constructive absurdity and general scarcity of design. The petal of this model is made in such a simple style that at first approximation it resembles a skillfully turned spoon made of DIY lures. In the center of the petal, there are three technological holes provided for creating a low-frequency acoustic sound during wiring. The axial part of the Wipp is made in the form of a float, the weight of which varies greatly within the series – from 5 to 15 grams. Manufacturers fixed a red front sight on the tee, which serves as the main attracting elements in the overall design.
As noted by users, the main catch of this spinner is limited to all types of river fish common in Russia. Buying this model, many of them did not even suspect that the unprepossessing appearance could conceal an outstanding fishing potential, the manifestation of which caught the fishing enthusiasts at the very first use.
Advantages
-
high degree of catchability;
-
very low price (comparable to Mepps' Black Fury series);
-
a wide range of weights in the line (from 5 to 15 grams);
-
additional acoustic effect as a luring factor.
disadvantages
- somewhat untidy appearance.
Mepps Black Fury
Rating: 4.6
The legendary Black Fury spinner from Mepps is a real cult among all true lovers of productive fishing. This kid has repeatedly proved its suitability for fishing in the most difficult conditions, and more than once helped out in confrontations with trophy fish. Its 3.5 grams was enough to pull out a lazy large pike, pike perch and chub from the depths, and also successfully fend off the attacks of a moving perch. The basis of his remarkable success was laid by an extremely successful combination of black with the color of precious metals. Bronze, silver and gold edging on the petal, when guided, creates an intense riot of color that cannot pass unnoticed by predatory fish. Additional stimulation to visual receptors is provided by the presence of dots (orange or yellow) in the central edged part, as well as a red bead worn on the axis of rotation.
Many anglers have come to love Mepps Black Fury for a price that will satisfy even the most frugal consumer. In addition, high efficiency of work, reliable and extremely simple design, as well as high-frequency operation of the petal, even at a low speed of wiring, are recorded in its asset.
Advantages
-
extremely popular bait in Russia;
-
good strength characteristics with small dimensions;
-
limited, but working petal colors;
-
simple and reliable design;
-
low price.
disadvantages
- not found.
The best spinners for trout
Mepps Black Fury # 2
Rating: 4.9
The second model of the 'Black Fury' has acquired several significant improvements over the first generation. First, the total weight of the lure has changed (from 3.5 to 4.5), which has a positive effect on stability when navigating in the current. The weight has changed, taking the shape of a 'worm' instead of a bead, and improved the balance of the middle part of the spoon. The petal remained the same as in the first generation, but a black one was added to the bronze, gold and silver edging, suitable only for fishing at a small depth.
Actually, there is nothing more to talk about this spoon. Its behavior has not changed at all since the release of the first Black Fury – it is the same intense running while driving, accompanied by a fast play of 'dots' on the outer part of the petal. The lure is inexpensive, easy to learn and recommended by more professional anglers, is great for any beginner.
Advantages
-
ease of learning;
-
low price for the entire range of colors;
-
intense, annoying predator play;
-
good flight data;
-
steady work on the current.
disadvantages
- not found.
Blue fox flash
Rating: 4.8
Potentially promising trout lure ranked by Blue Fox's good design and marketing. As in the case of the Daiwa Silver Creek Spinner R, the spinner's lead is made in the form of a fish, only not whole, but halved to reduce weight. As a camouflage for this little 'disgrace', the producers have attached an edge to the tee, which adds to the catchiness of the spoon and attracts the attention of nearby predators. The Blue Fox Flash petal is attached to a bow that makes free rotational movements around the main axis.
Judging by the feedback from the anglers, the second generation Flash is characterized by the greatest responsiveness on the part of the trout – more bulky spinners weighing 5.2 grams (versus 3.5 for the first generation). This is explained by the fact that massive specimens are more stable in the current, albeit (barely noticeable) lose in maneuverability.
Advantages
-
a design that assumes the customization of the load for the fish and the presence of a 'tail' edge;
-
good engagement of complete tees;
-
stable play of the petal, pleasant design in all its diversity;
-
low cost.
disadvantages
- not found.
Daiwa Silver Creek Spinner R
Rating: 4.8
In contrast to its direct competitors, Daiwa decided to go even further and customize the most important part of the spinner – the weight – for natural fish fry. Such a step found a lightning-fast response from predators living in domestic reservoirs, which led to the enormous popularity of spinners among anglers. In a short time, the Japanese company stamped modifications and thus expanded the line to 11 options, each of which has its own configuration of weight and length.
What all Silver Creek Spinner Rs have in common is good flight performance and the use of a two-component alloy in the core. Many consumers pay attention to the bending of the petal, the shape of which differs from model to model. Its game in many ways predetermines the catching power of the spoon, as well as the preferred type of fish for which it should be used. By the way, for trout fishing, options with a wider petal are suitable, which give the spinner stability in the current.
Advantages
-
reasonable price for the entire line;
-
original cargo execution;
-
the presence of a swivel, which reduces the twisting of the fishing line when fishing with a spoon;
-
abundance of modifications.
disadvantages
- not found.
Myran akka
Rating: 4.7
It is impossible to call Myran Akka a popular bait in Russia, but it is still worth noting its actual superiority over opponents in terms of catchability. The classic spinner has four weight categories (3, 5, 7 and 10 grams), which are provided with a special acoustic weight. This weight is a set of small balls, sealed in a split case, which create a sound effect when the spoon is driven through the water column. To balance with the flow, the manufacturers equipped the Myran Akka with a wide petal, the rotation frequency of which is highly dependent on the intensity of the drive and the speed of the opposite current (if fishing is carried out on fast-flowing rivers).
Based on their own experience, users say that for trout (and grayling) fishing, small versions of 3 and 5 grams are most suitable. The 7-gram version is good for catching perch, ide and chub, while the largest one will be effective for pike and zander.
Advantages
-
acceptable cost;
-
cargo with a characteristic acoustic effect;
-
the ability to catch various fish (with different bait weights);
-
limited but 'working' colors.
disadvantages
- low prevalence among anglers.
The best spinners for grayling
Mepps Aglia Long No. 00
Rating: 4.9
It so happened that the smallest lure in the series is also the very first Mepps model that has earned recognition in the fishing world. Agila Long # 00 has a characteristic elongated petal that rotates at a constant angle of 30 degrees relative to the axis. Depending on the intensity of the posting, this angle may change slightly, giving the baby a more aggressive look. Considering its insignificant weight of 2.5 grams, there is no need to talk about any intelligible characteristics of the cast – you should be prepared for the fact that with any attempt at a long-distance throw it will be carried away.
Consumer reviews indicate that Mepps Aglia Long No. 00 is a very unpretentious spoon that forgives most of the flaws in the wiring technique. It is perfect for beginners, both in terms of cost and fishing skills … and at the same time it will show enviable efficiency when fishing for grayling.
Advantages
-
low price;
-
adaptive play, subtly changing when the intensity of the drive changes;
-
good catchability for perch, chub and grayling;
-
easy to learn.
disadvantages
- bad flight data.
Blue fox moresilda
Rating: 4.8
Blue Fox products have always been ranked among the best in the overall ranking, and the current category is no exception. Moresilda – the legendary trolling spoon, produced since 1955, took its place due to the simplicity and good catching of river fish. Not so long ago, the majority of its audience was made up of Norwegian fishermen, but today 'Moresilda' is widely distributed in the retail network of Russia.
The main emphasis in the development of Blue Fox was made on weight, having released models of 15 and 18 grams without changing the body length (7.5 centimeters). In general, this step did not fundamentally change anything – the conditions of the spinners in terms of casting and wiring remained at about the same level. The main change was the endurance and durability, allowing the 18-gram spoon to carry large fish. As with the category opponent, Moresilda can be used by newcomers to fishing, as it does not carry anything innovative or sophisticated. The cost also matches the direction – both pleasant and not expensive.
Advantages
-
legendary lure from Blue Fox (over 60 years on the market);
-
extremely simple design and intuitive behavior in the water;
-
structural change in weight with a constant length parameter;
-
emphasis on use by beginners.
disadvantages
- limited color variations and sizes.
The best spinners for asp
Acme Trophy Spoon
Rating: 4.9
One of the leaders in the ranking of the best lures is the universal Acme Trophy Spoon, which is equally suitable for both summer and winter seasons. Её рабочие дипазоны поистине безграничны: модель отлично проявляет себя при отвесном блеснении, троллинге и различных вариациях ступенчатых проводок (джиг, твичинг, stop&go). The elongated body and irregular grooves of the front surface create a powerful alluring effect that attracts even lazy predators from all over the area. The Trophy Spoon performs differently for different movement patterns, giving it the weight of relatively less diverse competitors.
There are as many as seven standard sizes in this series, and all of them, one way or another, found a response among domestic fishermen. For asp, all medium and higher variants (T-500, T-1000 and T-340 with corresponding modifications) were the most catchy, while the smallest ones were useful for dragging perch, pike and zander. The only obstacle on the way to the acquisition of Trophy Spoon may be a price level slightly exceeding the market average (and even more so budgetary).
Advantages
-
powerful alluring effect;
-
a wide variety of bait sizes and colors;
-
high catchability noted by professionals;
-
versatility in terms of seasonal fishing;
-
original game with different wiring options.
disadvantages
- high price.
Bay De Noc Swedish Pimple
Rating: 4.8
One of the few representatives of ice fishing lures, which got into the rating due to the original performance and sharpening to achieve maximum results. It is used mainly in variations 4 and 5, which weigh 7 and 93 grams, respectively. The petal, elongated and somewhat curved, gives the spoon a high-frequency low-amplitude game that literally irritates predators and forces them to attack. The main 'highlight' of the Swedish Pimple is the unique combination of front surface corrugation and color. So, the body of one spoon can be painted in bronze and have a characteristic bumpy surface, while the other one can be painted in a combined silver-red and have a smooth texture. Consumers speak of the Bay De Noc Swedish Pimple in an extremely complimentary way, citing as advantages a fairly bearable price, a good case geometry and an individual approach to each individual color.
Advantages
-
the originality of each individual color scheme and the front surface of the body;
-
work at depths from 3 to 5 meters (depending on the size);
-
six series of lures in the line;
-
good grip;
-
small high-frequency play.
disadvantages
- not found.
Luhr Jensen CAST CHAMP
Rating: 4.7
Luhr Jensen's CAST CHAMP lures cannot boast the same popularity as, say, the Acme Trophy Spoon, but in some fishing components they prove themselves even better than the well-known competitor. Limited by weight, this wavering lure has a truly seductive effect on the asp, showing high catchability on any occasion.
The smallest (and lightest) spinner in the series weighs 14 grams and is only 5 centimeters long. Such conditions allow her to catch small, nimble predators such as perch or ide. The more massive varieties, as noted by professionals, are already more preferable when hunting asp. The intermediate model boasts a weight of 21 grams (with a length of 5.7 centimeters), while the largest, 6.7 centimeters, reaches 28 grams. In terms of cost, in all variations, CAST CHAMP shows results very close to the market average. This fact is very pleasing for fishing enthusiasts, especially in view of the general rise in the cost of equipment.
Advantages
-
three standard sizes, equally catchy for asp;
-
original shape, similar to the legendary Acme Kastmaster;
-
luring game and holography on the front of the spoon;
-
average cost.
disadvantages
-
low popularity among consumers;
-
the actual lack of supply in the retail chain of stores.
The best spinners for walleye
Mepps “Lusox AG” No. 3
Rating: 4.9
A series of classic spinning lures with interchangeable weight heads got into the rating due to their great popularity among domestic users. Their peculiarity was the unique selection of the configuration of the petals and the original solution to 'wrap' the cargo in deliberately red material to further attract predators. The rotating blades have a rather complex structure with many small bends and grooves on the front part, due to which they provide active rotation in the water column at any speed and force of the drive. Their component color also acts as an alluring aspect – especially the version with a smooth transition of silver to red. Weighing in at 20.5 grams, Mepps “Lusox AG” # 3 shows excellent casting conditions, allowing anglers to make long and precise throws in any direction.
As noted by users, this model performs well in almost all aspects of river fishing. Of course, it is not worth driving it into serious grassy thickets, as well as testing it in snags. Otherwise, it performs very well, down to the low cost component.
Advantages
-
excellent catchability in limited colors;
-
low price;
-
original execution of petals and weight;
-
very strong stimulation of the predator to attack;
-
good flight characteristics.
disadvantages
- not detected.
Acme Kastmaster
Rating: 4.8
Another representative of the legendary company Acme, which came to the market more than 50 years ago. For more than half a century of sales and production history, Kastmaster has undergone many changes, but it has not lost its 'crown' – the original body shape. The thicker rear end and smooth bevel of the side surfaces provided the lure with special aerodynamics, which significantly influenced the playing style and, ultimately, had a positive effect on the catching ability.
The long existence on the market has had a positive effect on the abundance of Kastmaster standard sizes within its series. Today, fishing shops are able to offer spoons weighing from 2.4 to 112 grams, but for the needs of river fishing, the upper limit is too excessive. The phenomenal catching power of the spoon is observed in the weight range from 11 to 28 grams, where pike perch, pike, chub and other inhabitants of river expanses bite very abundantly.
Advantages
-
an abundance of standard sizes by weight parameter;
-
a limited but effective number of colors;
-
the presence of a tail edge on some models – additional stimulation of the predator to attack;
-
a legendary lure that has been on the market for over 50 years.
disadvantages
- the presence of a huge number of counterfeits in the retail market.
Acme little cleo
Rating: 4.7
The legendary lure Little Cleo from Kastmaster, successfully produced and sold in North America, has also been awarded a hit in the rating. The main purpose of this shocker is to catch a large, clumsy predator in large bodies of water (mainly with stagnant water). The dimensions of the smallest lure in the series, the Little Cleo C 140, are ideal for fishing small fish such as perch or small zander. Its weight is 7 grams with a length of 4 centimeters, which provides the best flight characteristics and makes it possible to accurately cast the spoon at the target.
The largest specimen in the series is the C 340 lure with 21 grams of weight and 6.3 centimeters of length in the longitudinal direction. These massive 'babies' are capable of carrying much larger prey, including trophy pike, the same zander (but larger) and chub.
Advantages
